🤖 The AI wars have just begun...

Rowan Cheung • 3 minutes

In today's rundown:

  • 🤖 Elon Musk goes to war with Microsoft: The start if the AI wars

  • 🎨 Stability AI reveals StableLM: A new open-sourced LLM

  • 🎥 New NVIDIA research: Video Latent Diffusion Models

Read time: 4 minutes

🤖 Elon Musk Goes to War With Microsoft

Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter, just threatened to sue Microsoft by replying to this tweet, accusing Microsoft of illegally using Twitter's data to train its AI model. The threat follows reports of Microsoft dropping Twitter from its advertising platform.

Musk has recently been on a rampage in the world of AI. First, he signed an Open Letter to stop AI developments for six months more powerful than GPT-4; then we found out he started an AI company called X.AI, his plans for TruthGPT, and now this.

Recently, Reddit and Universal Music Group announced their intention to charge for data access, while Getty Images sued Stable Diffusion over alleged content copying for AI training. Musk's threats highlight the growing tension surrounding data ownership in the AI landscape. The battle for AI dominance has just begun.

🎨 Stability AI Reveals StableLM

The creators of Stable Diffusion, Stability AI, just released a suite of open-sourced large language models (LLMs) called StableLM.

Like ChatGPT, StableLM generates text and code and is trained on a larger version of the Pile dataset. StableLM models are currently available with 3 to 7 billion parameters, with larger models (15B and 65B) coming soon. Building on its collaboration with EleutherAI and its mission to make AI tools more accessible, Stability AI aims to foster creative integrations and applications.

🎥 New NVIDIA Research

The NVIDIA research team just dropped a new research paper on creating high-quality short videos from text prompts. This technique uses Video Latent Diffusion Models (Video LDMs), which work efficiently without using too much computing power.

It can create 113 frame-long videos at 1280x2048 resolution, rendered at 24 FPS, resulting in 4.7-second clips. The team first trained the model on images, then added a time dimension to make it work with videos.

This new research is impressive. At the current pace of development, we may soon be able to generate full-length movies from just a handful of text prompts within the next few years.

🤖 Microsoft's top secret AI chip

Rowan Cheung • 3 minutes

In today's rundown:

  • 🤖 Microsoft's secret AI chip: A new way to train LLM's

  • 💪 ChatGPT for your health: Introducing HealthGPT

  • 💔 AI-generated song gets shut down: RIP 'Heart on My Sleeve'

Read time: 3 minutes

🤖 Microsoft's Secret AI Chip

As first revealed by The Information, Microsoft has been secretly developing an artificial intelligence chip code-named 'Athena' since 2019, involving a 300-strong team.

The chip, designed for training large-language models like ChatGPT, could help lower Microsoft's AI application costs and improve negotiation power with Nvidia.

A select group of Microsoft and OpenAI employees is currently testing Athena. While it's expected to be available for internal use and OpenAI by next year, its accessibility to Azure customers is still uncertain.

The bottom line: Microsoft is going all in on AI. Athena has the potential to be a game changer for the company, not only reducing costs but keeping them among top competitors in the AI space.

💪 Connecting ChatGPT to Health Data

A Stanford student named Varun Shenoy connected ChatGPT to his iPhone to enable conversations with his digital health history and made the entire code public.

The application, dubbed 'HealthGPT,' allows users to engage in conversations with their health data. For example, during a test, Varun checked his weekly gym goals, and the app effectively displayed workout frequency, duration, and averages.

Although still in its early stages, HealthGPT gives us a glimpse into the future. Everyone may soon possess their own personal health assistant, powered by AI, capable of understanding individual bodies, providing tailored advice, and answering fitness-related questions.

💔 AI-generated Song Gets Shutdown

In Monday's newsletter, we covered "Heart on My Sleeve," a viral AI-generated song that featured synthesized vocals of Drake and The Weeknd.

The track amassed 600,000 Spotify streams, 15 million TikTok views, and 275,000 YouTube views in just a couple of days before Universal Music Group pulled it for containing "infringing content created with generative AI."

While the song may have been a hit, the confusion it caused raises essential questions about the legal and ethical responsibilities surrounding the use of AI to access and reproduce songs without consent.

🤖 Google is building an AI search engine

Rowan Cheung • 3 minutes

In today's rundown:

  • 📱 Google is building an AI search: Project 'Magi'

  • 🤖 Elon Musk starts AI company: OpenAI's newest competitor

  • 🎧 AI song goes VIRAL: AI Drake & The Weeknd

Read time: 4 minutes

📱 Google is Building an AI Search

According to the New York TimesGoogle is making a major change to search with a new AI search engine called Project 'Magi.' Here's the rundown:

  • Google has 160 engineers working on this project.

  • It will have a chat-like interface, similar to ChatGPT.

  • Transactions such as booking a flight will start happening directly on Google search.

  • Public release is expected to be next month for limited U.S. citizens.

The bottom line: Google is replacing the old-school method of displaying 10 results per page with an intelligent chatbot that provides instant answers.

Of note: This innovative move by Google comes after Samsung considered switching to Microsoft Bing as its default device search engine, potentially costing Google a staggering $3 billion in annual revenue.

🤖 Elon Musk Starts an AI Company

Elon Musk has recently established a new artificial intelligence company called X.AI, as first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Incorporated in Nevada last month, the company lists Musk as its director and Jared Birchall as secretary.

Speculation around Musk's AI ambitions grew after he purchased 10,000 GPUs for a generative AI project and began to recruit leading AI researchers.

Interestingly, this comes just three weeks after Musk signed an Open Letter urging a pause on AI advancements more powerful than GPT-4. If you can't stop them, join them 🤷‍♂️.

🎧 AI-Generated Song Goes Viral

This AI-generated song, "Heart on My Sleeve," created by "ghostwriter977," is currently blowing up on TikTok and other social media platforms. The track, released just a day ago, features AI versions of Drake and The Weeknd and has already gained over 250,000 streams on Spotify.

Regardless of personal opinions on the song's quality, this development shows that AI technology is increasingly blurring the lines between real and robot-generated, signaling a potentially big shift in the music industry.

🤖 AutoGPT is the next big thing in AI

Rowan Cheung • 3 minutes

In today's rundown:

  • 🤖 AutoGPT: The next big thing in AI

  • 🎙️ AI generated podcast: The Joe Rogan AI Experience

  • 🌪️ Machine learning meteorologists: Can AI predict the weather?

Read time: 4 minutes

🤖 AutoGPT

AutoGPT has been making waves on the internet recently, trending on both GitHub and Twitter. If you thought ChatGPT was crazy, AutoGPT is about to blow your mind.

AutoGPT creates AI "agents" that operate automatically on their own and complete tasks for you. In case you've missed our previous issues covering it, here's a quick rundown:

  • It's open-sourced [code]

  • It works by chaining together LLM "thoughts"

  • It has internet access, long-term and short-term memory, access to popular websites, and file storage

It's been out for a week, and people are already building incredible things. Check out this compilation of insane demos and tutorials on running AI agents for yourself on your computer or phone.

The bottom line: Businesses need to take this technology seriously. AutoGPT is expanding in popularity and will continue improving as developers address current limitations. Rest assured, we'll keep you updated on this groundbreaking development.

🎙️ AI-Generated Podcast

In terms of media production, we've seen AI-generated music videos and Kanye songs, but this podcast takes things to a whole new level.

The 51-minute podcast recreated an episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience" and was generated entirely using AI. The episode features AI-generated versions of Joe Rogan and Sam Altman discussing various topics, including AI ethics and its impact on content creation.

While it might seem authentic to a casual listener, some moments reveal its AI-generated nature. However, these differences will likely be completely indistinguishable in a few years, and it will be increasingly more difficult to tell what is real from fake in the near future.

🌪️ Can AI Detect The Weather?

Chatbots with human-like capabilities are getting more powerful and changing our world in various ways daily. But can they help us know what the weather will be like in the future?

Weather 20/20, a forecast service, claims to utilize machine learning to identify recurring patterns and predict events months in advance, a modern take on analog forecasting. The weather service claimed they even used machine learning to predict Hurricane Ian before it happened.

🐦 Twitter Joins The AI Frenzy

Elon Musk appears to be pushing Twitter toward a significant artificial intelligence project after reports that the company just purchased 10,000 GPUs and recruited talent from Google DeepMind, as covered a month ago in our previous issue.

A GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is a specialized computer chip that accelerates complex math calculations, making it particularly suited for AI systems that require large amounts of data processing. Think of it as the engine of a race car, while a traditional CPU (used for regular computers) would be an engine in a family sedan.

While details of the project remain under wraps, we know that 10,000 GPUs is no small investment- and Twitter will be a company on strong watch in the future generative AI space.

🌎 Kuwait Unveils AI News Anchor

Kuwait News, a leading media outlet in the Middle Eastern country, has introduced "Fedha," a fully AI-generated virtual news reporter.

Her appearance reflects Kuwait's diverse population, and she may eventually even develop a Kuwaiti accent and even read live online news bulletins.

As AI technology evolves, distinguishing AI-generated characters from real people may become increasingly challenging. Could this signal a new era for news and social media?
