In today's rundown:

  • 🤯 NVIDIA’s groundbreaking graphics research

  • 🤖 Inflection AI releases Pi

  • 📉 ChatGPT claims its first victim

  • 📵 Samsung Bans ChatGPT from Company Devices

Read time: 4 minutes

🤯 NVIDIA’s Groundbreaking Graphics Research

NVIDIA is set to present around 20 research papers at SIGGRAPH 2023, showcasing groundbreaking new AI research aimed at helping developers and artists bring ideas to life.

The research papers range from AI models that turn text into images to inverse rendering tools that transform images into 3D. Read more about their research papers in their latest blog post.

The 5th paper presents an impressive demo, previewing NVIDIA's new AI-driven method that uses neural physics and AI to enable artists to create realistic hair for 3D characters in real-time. It seems advanced technology is putting an end to bad hair days.

🤖 Inflection AI Releases Pi

Inflection AI has just launched Pi, a ChatGPT-like competitor designed to be a kind and supportive companion assistant. Pi acts as a coach, confidante, creative partner, and sounding board.

Backed by $225 million in funding and founded by DeepMind and LinkedIn co-founders, expectations were high for this AI chatbot. However, early users are reporting the chatbot as underwhelming, with many calling it a "slower version of ChatGPT."

Give Pi a try for yourself, and share your thoughts by voting in the poll below.

📉 ChatGPT Claims Its First Victim

ChatGPT just cut Chegg in half. On Monday’s earnings call, the CEO mentioned that the chatbot is affecting subscriber growth, causing the stock to plummet nearly 50%.

The AI-fueled anxiety rippled through the education sector, with Pearson and Duolingo shares also dropping 15% and 10%, respectively.

To counteract this, Chegg has partnered with OpenAI to develop Cheggmate, while Duolingo launched an AI-powered subscription tier.

📵 Samsung Bans ChatGPT from Company Devices

Samsung has decided to temporarily ban the use of generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, on company-owned devices and internal networks following an accidental leak of sensitive data last month.

The restriction will last until the company can establish secure measures to safely utilize AI for enhancing employee productivity.

Don’t freak out. The ban will not affect consumers or other Samsung device owners. Nonetheless, this leak is another example of why it’s worth using caution when using chatbots.

🤖 The 'Godfather of AI' warns of AI dangers

In today's rundown:

  • 👴 The ‘Godfather of AI’ quits Google

  • 🧠 AI makes mind-reading possible

  • 💻 IBM plans to replace 7800 jobs with AI

Read time: 3 minutes

👴 The ‘Godfather of AI’ Quits Google

Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the "Godfather of AI,” just quit Google to warn the world of the dangers ahead.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Hinton expressed regret for his decade-long work and shared his concerns about misinformation. He also warned about the long-term threats to humanity once AI starts writing and running its own code.

“The idea that this stuff could actually get smarter than people — a few people believed that”... “Most people thought it was way off. And I thought it was way off. I thought it was 30 to 50 years or even longer away. Obviously, I no longer think that.”

Hinton is now dedicating the remainder of his life to ensuring the technology he helped create does not endanger civilization. He also clarified in a tweet that his decision was not due to Google's irresponsibility but to emphasize the need for discussions about AI's dangers.

🧠 AI Makes Mind Reading Possible

This new study will literally- *blow your mind*. Researchers at the University of Texas have developed a GPT-based decoder that can translate thoughts into text using non-invasive fMRI scans.

Participants trained the decoder by listening to podcasts for 16 hours in an fMRI scanner. The AI system then generated text as participants listened to or imagined a new story, capturing general thoughts or ideas.

The results: 50% of the time, the generated text matched the intended meaning of the original words. The image below shows that the exact words were not always the same, but the overall meaning was captured.

This could potentially be used with other brain-imaging systems in the future, but ethical implications should definitely be considered carefully before scanning your thoughts with AI.

💻 IBM Plans to Replace 7800 Jobs With AI

Following Dropbox's move to lay off 500 employees and replace them with AI, IBM now plans to replace 7,800 jobs with AI technology and pause hiring for roles that could be automated.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna stated that most back-office positions, such as HR and accounting, will be replaced. He noted, “I could easily see 30% of that getting replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period.”

AI is having an insane impact on the job market already. What are you doing to position yourself for the future?

In today's rundown:

  • 🤖 Amazon plans to supercharge Alexa

  • 🎨 Stability AI’s new chatbot

  • 🇮🇹 Italy restores ChatGPT access

  • 🛩️ Palantir launches AIP

Read time: 4 minutes

🤖 Amazon Plans to Supercharge Alexa

During Amazon’s recent earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy revealed plans to develop a more advanced large language model (LLM) to supercharge Alexa.

Amazon believes that improving the LLM will help achieve Amazon's ultimate goal of creating “the world's best personal assistant.”

Jassy highlighted the importance of LLMs and generative AI in achieving this vision, noting Amazon's current strong position with Alexa, which boasts “a couple of hundred million endpoints“ across entertainment, shopping, and smart homes.

Very soon, everyone will have their very own personalized AI assistants. We don’t know if Amazon, Apple, Google, or someone else will build that assistant first, but tech giants are certainly racing to dominate the market.

🎨 Stability AI’s New Chatbot

Stability AI introduced StableVicuna, the first large-scale open-source chatbot trained with reinforced learning from human feedback.

StableVicuna aims to provide a user-friendly experience that can handle basic math, writing code, and grammar assistance. The overall performance is decent compared to similar-sized chatbots.

Right now, you can try the demo on Hugging Face, but as development continues, a Discord bot and chat UI interface will be launched.

🇮🇹 Italy Restores ChatGPT Access

ChatGPT has returned to Italy after addressing concerns raised by the Italian Data Protection Authority.

The chatbot was initially banned on March 31st after violating the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations. The company made changes to comply with data privacy regulations, including a form for EU users to remove personal data, age verification for Italian users, and a help center article explaining data collection practices.

The bottom line: While Italy has revived access to the chatbot, OpenAI will likely still face future challenges. Other countries, such as Canada and Spain, are also considering opening investigations into how the LLM collects data.

🛩️ Palantir Launches AIP

Palantir, founded by billionaire Peter Thiel, is launching Palantir Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) to integrate AI into military decision-making.

AIP allows military operators to utilize AI for tasks such as drone reconnaissance, generating attack plans, and jamming enemy communications.

Operators can also pose questions to the AI, such as identifying enemy units in the region, requesting high-resolution imagery, and summarizing operational plans.

Although Palantir asserts that AIP ensures responsible, legal, and ethical use of AI in sensitive and classified contexts, the company has yet to address known AI issues directly.

Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, just launched GigaChat, an AI chatbot competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT. No, this is not a joke. They’re literally naming the chatbot GigaChat.

Gigachat will answer questions, hold a conversation, write program code to develop software, and generate images. The tool is trained in Russian and boasts multimodal features, setting it apart from ChatGPT, which solely creates text.

This advancement follows ChatGPT's service ban in Russia, showcasing major global players' recognition of AI's potential. China has also entered the AI frenzy, revealing not one but two ChatGPT competitors.

Ⓜ️ Meta’s AI Plans

In Meta's latest earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the company’s focus on incorporating artificial intelligence into the company's products.

Zuck revealed plans for AI-driven agents in business messaging, customer support, and the metaverse. Details were pretty vague, but he mentioned AI chat experiences in WhatsApp and Messenger and visual creation tools for Facebook, Instagram, and ads.

The CEO also said recent AI recommendations led to people spending over 24% more time on Instagram, increasing monetization by 30% on Instagram and 40% on Facebook compared to just a quarter ago. The result- Meta stock soared nearly 14%.

🤖 Dropbox Lays off 500

Dropbox is streamlining its operations, laying off 500 employees, about 16% of its workforce, to focus on AI development.

CEO Drew Houston says the decision, while painful, is necessary for the company's future and to remain at the forefront of the AI era.

While this pivot may be painful for those affected, it could benefit Dropbox's long-term success in an increasingly AI-driven world.

  • 🍎 Apple reveals plans for 'Quartz': An AI-powered health coach

  • 🤖 Boston Dynamics puts ChatGPT in a robot: Personalized robo-dogs

  • 🦄 Replit reveals replit-code-v1-3b: The next AI unicorn?

  • 📱 TikTok's new AI avatars: AI-generated profile pictures

Read time: 4 minutes

🍎 Apple Reveals Plans For 'Quartz'

Apple is developing an AI-powered health coaching service called Quartz, aiming to motivate users to exercise, improve eating habits, and sleep better with personalized coaching programs based on Apple Watch data.

Though exact details are not yet provided, Quartz likely uses AI to analyze users' data collected from their Apple Watch, such as activity, sleep, and other health metrics. By processing this data, the AI system can provide tailored recommendations to help users improve exercise routines, eating habits, and sleep quality.

While Microsoft and Google frequently make headlines with their AI breakthroughs, Apple is quietly making strides in the AI scene, with moves like Quartz and the recent acquisition of an AI startup.

Question of the day: Will Microsoft, Google, NVIDIA, or Apple win the AI gold rush? Or will another company take the lead?

🤖 Boston Dynamics Puts ChatGPT in a Robot

Our good friend Santiago over at Boston Dynamics just released a demo video showcasing the integration of ChatGPT into their robot dog, Spot.

Equipped with ChatGPT and Google's speech function, Spot can now effortlessly communicate complex information to humans. For example, the robot dog can update tasks, battery levels, and location and respond to voice commands.

While serious concerns exist about the potential misuse of such technology against AI, the benefits of advanced communication continue to look promising if ethics and safety are considered.

🦄 Replit Reveals replit-code-v1-3b

Replit, an AI-assisted coding platform, just raised $97.4 million in a funding round, achieving a valuation of $1.16 billion, and announced huge features at their first Developer Day.

The platform has experienced rapid growth, with its user base doubling since December 2021 to 22.5 million developers. Among the announcements were production-grade deployments straight from the IDE, a more powerful workspace, and secure workspace extensions.

To top things off- Replit introduced their very own open-sourced LLaMa style LLM, 'replit-code-v1-3b,' trained on 2.7 billion parameters and performing 40% better than comparable models.

In the future, Replit may enable anyone with minimal or no technical expertise develop complex software programs with ease. The company is a sleeping AI unicorn in the making.

📱 TikTok's New AI Avatars

TikTok is experimenting with a new feature that allows users to create AI-generated avatars for their profile pictures. Initially spotted by Matt Navarra, the Lensa-like tool will generate stylized, illustrated images based on users' uploaded photos. Here's a quick rundown:

  • Can be used once per day

  • Upload 3-10 photos of yourself, and it will generate up to 30 avatars

  • TikTok deletes all uploaded images and AI-generated avatars after a short amount of time

  • You can pick up to 5 different styles

  • Only for select users, no set timeline for general public rollout

The excitement of AI is making its mark on every social media platform. Snapchat was the first to introduce AI to its 375 million daily users with "My AI," and now TikTok is following suit.

🤖 A new ChatGPT rival emerges...

Rowan Cheung • 4 minutes

Sign Up | Advertise | Tools

In today's rundown:

  • 🤗 Hugging Face launches HuggingChat: ChatGPT's newest rival

  • 🎥 Runway launches Gen-1 iPhone app: Create films from your pocket

  • 🥷 ChatGPT goes incognito: How to disable chat history

  • 👁️‍🗨️ NVIDIA announces NeMo Guardrails: Enhancing chatbot safety

  • 🤖 Yelp adds AI-powered search: Discover business easier

Read time: 5 minutes

🤗 Hugging Face Launches ChatGPT Alternative

Hugging Face has launched a 30-billion-parameter open-sourced AI chatbot called HuggingChat, designed to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Developed by the Open Assistant project under the German nonprofit LAION, HuggingChat aims to be a versatile, customizable, and efficient assistant accessible to all.

Despite concerns about the potential misuse of open-source models, the demand for alternatives to ChatGPT continues to rise. Hugging Face's next move could be introducing HuggingChat Apps, solidifying its position as a major competitor to OpenAI.

🎥 Runway Launches Gen-1 iPhone App

Runway has introduced its first mobile app for iOS, allowing users to access their Gen-1 video-to-video generative AI model directly from their phones.

The app functions like a style transfer tool, enabling users to transform existing videos based on text, image, or video inputs. Despite some limitations, such as footage length restrictions and occasional processing delays, the app is a game changer for content creation.

Although Runway may not yet be suitable for professional production work, it offers a glimpse into the exciting possibilities that tools like this will bring in the near future. Soon, people will be creating entire films right from their pockets!

🥷 ChatGPT Goes Incognito

OpenAI just launched a feature for ChatGPT that allows users to turn off chat history, allowing users to choose conversations that can be used to train their models. This is huge for the current EU privacy concerns, especially with the recent ban in Italy.

AI enthusiasts are calling this the 'incognito' mode of ChatGPT, but it's not exactly the same. In the blog post by OpenAI, they highlight:

  • "When chat history is disabled, we will retain new conversations for 30 days and review them only when needed to monitor for abuse before permanently deleting."

This means that OpenAI will continue to review chats for abusive conversations, but those chats will not be used to train and improve their models. While knowledge is power, regulating it is essential to ensure it's used responsibly.

👁️‍🗨️ NVIDIA Announces NeMo Guardrails

NVIDIA just announced NeMo Guardrails, an open-source tool designed to improve the performance and safety of AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT.

This toolkit essentially acts as a safety mechanism for chatbots. It intercepts responses before reaching the Large Language Model (LLM) to either prevent a response or guide its formulation.

Available as open-source code on GitHub, NVIDIA also offers NeMo Guardrails as part of its AI Foundations service, providing pre-trained models and frameworks for companies that lack the time or resources to train and maintain their models. In summary, NeMo Guardrails will help make AI chatbots more useful and reliable.

🤖 Yelp Adds AI-powered Search

Yelp is harnessing the power of AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance their search experience. The new search feature provides smarter suggestions, helping users discover businesses that meet their requirements better.

By using LLMs, Yelp can now understand the nuances of user search intent and display relevant information from reviews as snippets under each business listing. Additionally, Yelp is using AI to provide better search suggestions based on user search intent without being limited by location.

The bottom line: Yelp is keeping up with AI innovation, leading to a more efficient, tailored, and versatile search experience for its users.

In today's rundown:

  • 🤖 Grimes embraces AI in music: Sharing royalties with creators

  • 🥷 Binance Introduces Sensei: A crypto chatbot using AI

  • 🪐 AI discovers a new planet: Revolutionizing space exploration

  • 📝 1 million tokens: New viral AI research paper

Read time: 4 minutes

🤖 Grimes Embraces AI in Music

Grimes, a famous Canadian musician also known as the mother to three of Elon Musk's children, tweeted over the weekend giving her approval for creating AI-generated songs using her voice, as long as creators share 50% of the royalties with her.

In a follow-up tweet, she announced that her vocals can be accessed through elf.tech and that she will be using blockchain technology to split royalties with AI creators.

While some artists such as Drake are banning the use of generative AI with their music, Grimes is the first mainstream artist to fully embrace AI, inviting fans to essentially work for her by using her voice while she sits back and collects 50% of royalties.

🥷 Binance Introduces Sensei

Following Grimes' innovation for combining both AI and blockchain technology, Binance unveils Binance Sensei, a personalized crypto assistant chatbot powered by AI.

Sensei is trained on over 1,000 articles and courses available on Binance Academy, allowing users to easily access the platform's extensive educational resources about crypto and web3.

With this move, Binance becomes the first crypto platform to embrace AI, making blockchain and cryptocurrency knowledge more accessible and engaging for users of all levels.

🪐 AI Discovers a New Planet

Researchers at the University of Georgia recently discovered a new planet using machine learning, demonstrating AI's potential to transform how scientists detect and identify new planets far from Earth.

The study demonstrates how machine learning can accurately identify exoplanets by examining protoplanetary disks. The AI models pinpointed the planet's location, even in data humans had already analyzed.

This is yet another use case for AI to accelerate the development of human society. In the near future, AI-driven discoveries will most likely heavily influence the future of space exploration.

📝 1 million Tokens?!

A new AI research paper has been going viral due to the authors' groundbreaking discovery, which allows the Recurrent Memory Transformer to retain information across a staggering 1 million tokens.

To put this into perspective, GPT-4 handles 32,000 tokens (around 50 pages of documents), and the entire Harry Potter series is around 1.5 million tokens.

GPT-4 was only released slightly over a month ago, and we were drooling over 32k tokens. Now, try 1 million. The pace of AI development is truly incredible.

⚡️ Amazon Introduces Dialogue Boost

Amazon has introduced "Dialogue Boost," an AI-powered tool for Prime Video that enhances dialogue volume in movies and TV shows.

This feature aims to help users, especially those who are hard of hearing, better understand dialogues through background noise or action scenes. The feature will only be initially available for select content.

Amazon is the first streaming platform to offer this AI-based solution, demonstrating their commitment to staying ahead of competitors by providing new innovative solutions through the latest AI developments.

🇯🇵 Yokosuka adopts ChatGPT

Yokosuka City in Japan is the first municipality to adopt ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, in its government offices.

A one-month trial involving 4,000 employees aims to use the chatbot to answer questions, compose sentences, translate words, and summarize sentences.

This initiative seeks to boost efficiency and enable staff to concentrate on work only humans can perform. While ChatGPT is not yet capable of replacing government jobs, employing the chatbot to enhance workflows amidst a shrinking population is a smart move by the city, and others are likely to follow soon.

💻 Google Gives Bard a Boost

Google's AI tool, Bard, now offers software developers a helping hand with programming tasks like code generation, debugging, and code explanation in over 20 languages.

These updates respond to massive user demand and cover popular languages like C++, Java, and Python. Although Bard's performance initially lagged behind competitors like ChatGPT, these new features may help Google catch up. However, in the update released by Google, they highlight that it's still an early experiment, and Bard may provide inaccurate or incomplete information.

The bottom line: Google is trying hard to keep up with ChatGPT! Bard's new features can potentially assist developers, but its reliability remains unproven.
