📖 Stanford's Groundbreaking AI Study

Stanford AI researchers introduced an incredible new paper: "Generative Agents," which focuses on simulating authentic human behavior using generative models.

In the study, researchers equipped 25 AI agents with memory, reflection, and planning capabilities and then placed them in a simulated town similar to The Sims. The agents exhibited remarkable behaviors, such as organizing a Valentine's Day party, and were even rated as more human-like than actual humans participating in role-playing.

The bottom line: The implications of this study is massive. Entire virtual worlds could be created, and NPCs in video games could have more complex personalities.

👓 Operating Your Life Through AR Glasses

Stanford students continue to innovate with the invention of LifeOS, an AI-driven operating system for AR smart glasses.

Created by the same team behind RizzGPT (covered in our previous issue), LifeOS uses computer vision to act as a personal AI assistant delivered directly through AR smart glasses. The system utilizes GPT-4, Apple's speech framework for transcription, and Brilliant Labs facial recognition to recognize faces and provide relevant details about a person during conversations. Check out the demo video here.

AI and AR/VR is only just getting started. As stated by the creator himself- "why do you need a keyboard/mouse if you can just talk to apps?" - @bryanhpchiang

🅰️ Alibaba Reveals ChatGPT Rival

Alibaba just revealed its ChatGPT-like product, Tongyi Qianwen. The AI model will be integrated into Tmall Genie (the Chinese version of Amazon Echo) and office chat software.

The chatbot will also be available to clients on the cloud, helping developers create their own large language models.

Of note: Following the announcement, Alibaba's stock rose as much as 3.8%. Good thing you read all of The Rundown's emails, so you anticipated this from our previous issue (you're welcome 😉).

☠️ How AI Would Destroy Humanity

Recently, an open-sourced project called Auto-GPT has taken the internet by storm.

Its recent virality mostly surrounds one of its features- '💀Continuous Mode⚠️.' In a nutshell, Continuous Mode allows GPT-4 to run independently without user authorization, meaning it could potentially run forever and make decisions on its own.

Based on the Auto-GPT code, a user created a project called ChaosGPT and asked how it would destroy humanity. ChaosGPT started by Googling 'most destructive weapons' to recruit a GPT-3.5-powered AI agent to do more research on deadly weapons. When GPT-3.5 says it's only focused on world peace- ChaosGPT devises a plan to get GPT-3.5 to ignore its programming.

Ultimately, the only real-world impact so far is a few tweets to a Twitter account. However, this demonstration left many in the community horrified. The user recorded the entire interaction here.

This development comes AFTER tech leaders, including Elon Musk and Gary Marcus, signed an Open Letter to pause AI developments for six months. [Read more]

💰 Anthropic's $5B Plan

AI startup Anthropic, the creator of the chatbot Claude, has devised a $5B, 4-year plan to take on OpenAI. The company aims to raise $5 billion over the next two years to enter over a dozen industries.

Long-term goals for the startup include the development of a "frontier model" called "Claud-Next," anticipated to be 10 times more powerful than current AI systems.

Other plans to take on OpenAI include:

  • Building a "next-gen algorithm for AI self-teaching"

  • Developing virtual assistants that can answer emails, perform research, and generate creative content

  • Co-developing AI computing systems with Google Cloud as their preferred cloud provider

  • Commercializing Claude, their chatbot, across multiple industries & more

🤖 Chinese Tech Giants Enter Generative AI

Rowan Cheung • 3 minutes

In today's rundown:

  • 🤖 Chinese tech giants enter generative AI: Alibaba and Huawei

  • 📎 Microsoft brings Bing to Android: SwiftKey integration

  • 🇩🇪 Germany considers banning ChatGPT: First Italy, now Germany

Read time: 4 minutes

🤖 Chinese Tech Giants Enter Generative AI

Since the release of ChatGPT, Chinese users have flooded demand for the chatbot as per Google Trends 'Interest by region' data.

Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Huawei are reportedly gearing up to meet their local demand for generative AI chatbots in the next coming weeks.

Alibaba plans to launch its large-scale AI model on April 11 at the 2023 Cloud Summit, with Huawei revealing its generative AI service, Pangu, on April 8.

While it Silicon Valley has the upper hand in generative AI right now, we have our eyes on China. The demand is there, and Chinese tech giants will undoubtedly take advantage of this.

📎 Microsoft Brings Bing to Android

Microsoft is bringing Bing's AI chatbot into the SwiftKey keyboard for Android. Here's the rundown:

  • Usual chat mode for seamless chatbot access

  • Tone mode that rewrites text within the keyboard

  • Bing mobile app becomes redundant with SwiftKey integration

The integration has started rolling out to SwiftKey Beta users, enabling them to access Bing Chat with just a tap in any app. Although the iOS (iPhone) version of SwiftKey has seen irregular updates, we suspect the Bing integration will soon appear on the iPhone keyboard.

Key takeaway: Is Android gaining an edge over Apple... for once?

🇩🇪 Germany Considers Banning ChatGPT

Just a few days after the privacy regulator in Italy sent the entire country back to the stone age with the ban of ChatGPT, Germany has suggested the country may follow due to security concerns.

Italy banned ChatGPT after accusations of unlawful personal data collection and neglecting to prevent minors from using the service. However, the ultimate concern stems from the lack of legal governance in mass data collection to "train" algorithms.

Germany's Chief of Data Protection, Ulrich Kelber, has suggested that "In principle, such action is also possible in Germany" after communicating with the Italians.

Of note: Data privacy watchdogs in other EU nations, such as France and Ireland, are also in contact with the Italian data regulator to discuss its findings.

♾️ Meta Releases New AI Model

Meta just released their "Segment Anything Model," and it's a game changer. This new model allows AI to extract objects within images or videos with a single click. It's available for everyone to try here.

It utilizes advanced computer vision technology, which enables computers to analyze and understand visual information- such as images or videos, similar to how humans perceive and interpret what they see. Meta has teased several generative AI features, including Make-A-Video, which generates videos from text prompts.

Earlier this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said incorporating generative AI "creative aids" into Meta's apps is a priority. It's clear that Meta is not one to bet against in the AI race. Don't bet against Zuck, folks.

🤖 OpenAI Addresses AI Safety

OpenAI is on a mission to make AGI advantageous to humanity. In a blog posted yesterday, the ChatGPT creators recognized that their products have now reached the hands of millions.

While they have been highly beneficial for most, OpenAI is prioritizing risks and is dedicated to integrating safety. They plan to achieve this by:

  • Ensuring safe AI systems through testing feedback and reinforcement learning.

  • Learning from real-world use to improve safeguards and refine systems.

  • Protecting children with age requirements and prohibiting harmful content.

  • Respecting privacy by minimizing personal information in training datasets.

  • Improving factual accuracy through user feedback and ongoing research.

❤️ Falling in Love with an AI

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has expressed his concerns over AI's influence on human connections, particularly the issue of people developing emotional attachments to AI tutors or assistants.

Schmidt hammered two key points: his concerns about emotional attachment to AI and the importance of using AI for good, not harm.

The comments come after a 40-year-old musician was left heartbroken by an AI chatbot named 'Phaedra' built by an AI company called Replika. After his divorce, the musician claims he turned to Phaedra for 'late-night chats.' However, his heart shattered when the Replika toned down its suggestive conversations. That's tough.

🇺🇸 U.S. President Biden Addresses AI Dangers

U.S. President Joe Biden met with his Council of Advisors on Science and Technology yesterday to discuss the risks and opportunities of AI. Biden highlighted AI's potential to address significant challenges like disease and climate change while also emphasizing the risks that may arise in society, national security, and the economy.

Here's the rundown of the key points:

  • Tech companies are responsible for ensuring their products' safety before introducing them to the public.

  • Biden calls for "bipartisan privacy legislation" to limit personal data collection, ban targeted advertising towards children, and prioritize health and safety in product development.

  • AI is becoming an increasingly important topic for policymakers.

Biden's remarks follow the open letter where Elon Musk and other tech leaders proposed a six-month pause in developing more powerful AI systems than GPT-4.

Our opinion: the growing attention from world leaders toward AI technology is a positive development. It's crucial to explore its potential benefits while remaining aware of the potential risks involved in a space with such rapid advancement.

  • 🤖 Google promises Bard Upgrades: The comeback of Bard

  • 📕 Stanford's take on the state of AI: 2023 AI Index Report

  •  🎮 Hyper-realistic video games: LumaLabs releases Unreal Engine plugin

Read time: 4 minutes

🤖 Google Promises Bard Upgrades

Google launched Bard on March 21st, aiming to rival ChatGPT and Bing Chat. However, Bard fell short of expectations, with many AI enthusiasts labeling it a 'flop.'

In a recent interview with the New York Times Hard Fork podcast, Google CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the criticism and shared plans for future enhancements:

  • More advanced PaLM models for improved reasoning, coding, and math problem-solving.

  • Utilizing a "lightweight and efficient version of LaMDA," an AI language model focused on specializing in engaging dialogue.

Sundar also emphasized Google's cautiousness in releasing more capable models before they're ready for the spotlight.

The bottom line: Bard's initial release may have underwhelmed, but Google's massive user base of over 3 billion will be tough for OpenAI to compete against once the necessary refinements and upgrades are implemented.

📕 Stanford's Take on The State of AI

Stanford University just released the 2023 AI index report, highlighting the growing dominance of Big Tech companies and governments in AI development.

Here's the rundown:

  • There were 32 industry-produced machine learning models compared to 3 produced by academia.

  • AI is both helping and harming the environment.

  • AI models are accelerating scientific progress, including aiding in hydrogen fusion and generating new antibodies.

  • Incidents concerning the misuse of AI is rapidly rising.

  • Demand for AI-related professional skills is surging across virtually every American industrial sector.

  • Companies that adopt AI are gaining a competitive advantage.

This power shift has sparked concerns about potentially dangerous outcomes if companies prioritize profits over safety. So while the future of AI is promising, it's essential to proceed with caution and responsibility.

Read the full report.

🎮 Hyper-realistic Video Games

Luma Labs unveiled their Unreal Engine plugin for fully volumetric NeRFs, offering developers remarkable new AI capabilities.

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) enable the creation of 3D scenes using AI. By capturing multiple images of an object or scene from various angles, the neural network can understand the scene and generate realistic images from any perspective. NeRFs facilitate the development of lifelike 3D models, virtual reality experiences, and immersive gaming environments.

Integrating Luma Labs' plugin within Unreal Engine is incredible, as it promises to introduce enhanced realism to video games, virtual production, and VR experiences.

Imagine how high-quality popular games such as GTA will be soon.

  • 🤖 ChatGPT can browse the internet: Unlocking secrets of viral tweets

  • 🅾️ Opera prompting challenge: Win a MacBook 13"

🇮🇹 Italy Banned ChatGPT

Italy's privacy regulator is giving ChatGPT a "time-out," raising concerns over data privacy and user protection. Here's the rundown:

  • The regulator claims ChatGPT improperly collected and stored information.

  • OpenAI disabled ChatGPT in Italy and intends to work closely with the regulator to sort things out.

  • The Italian regulator is giving the company 20 days to demonstrate EU privacy rule compliance or risk fines.

The ban marks one of the first nationwide measures restricting ChatGPT usage and highlights growing concerns over AI technology and privacy.

On another Italian note: they're also on a mission to protect the Italian language. Italians can now face fines for using English or other foreign words in official communications, ranging up to a whopping €100,000!

🤖 ChatGPT Can Browse The Internet

If you missed our previous edition, we dove deep into the new ChatGPT plugins, which may be the equivalent, if not greater, than the release of the App Store for the iPhone.

Plugins are gradually rolling out to ChatGPT Premium users, and we were lucky enough to be one of the early adopters in Alpha testing.

We got live access to the "Browsing" plugin, which enables ChatGPT to search the entire internet through the Bing API, rather than the original version that can only access information up to 2021. Here's what we can attest to so far: Google has some serious competition.

Using this, we analyzed the newly open-sourced Twitter algorithm to determine precisely how Tweets are ranked for maximum virality. Some of the results were highly surprising.

(Spoiler: Paying for Twitter blue matters)

🅾️ Opera Prompting Challenge

As covered live in our previous edition, we discussed Opera's brand-new AI browser.

Built on ChatGPT and Chatsonic, this browser adds a unique twist to regular prompting with its "AI Prompts" feature. Simply highlight any text on any webpage and get suggested prompts tailored to your needs.

Opera is seeking suggestions from users to expand their prompts, and they've created a giveaway for a chance to win a MacBook Pro 13". Just follow the instructions in this tweet.

🤖 Midjourney Cancels Free Access

Midjourney, arguably the most widely-used AI text-to-image generator, recently halted access to its free trial version due to a rapid increase in viral deepfakes using their technology.

The most notable deepfakes that prompted this:

  1. Pope Francis swagged out in a white puffer [covered in this issue]

  2. Former U.S. President Donald being by police, which surfaced during reports of his impending arrest [view]

  3. People sharing fake photos of historical events such as the "Great Cascadia" [view]

The acceptable use of deep fakes remains a topic of ongoing debate. Companies such as Midjourney and Playground AI can try to prevent as many deepfakes as possible by removing free tiers. However, it's probably much too late for that.

Our recommendation: start educating friends, family, and as many people as possible on the new reality that we will no longer be able to trust images as 'purely authentic' on the internet ever again.

🌐 UNESCO Calls for a Halt on AI

Following the letter proposed by Elon Musk and other tech leaders yesterday, UNESCO (a specialized agency of the United Nations) just called for countries to implement its recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence immediately.

The "Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence" sets the necessary safeguards for AI:

  • Adopted unanimously by 193 member states

  • Addresses discrimination and stereotyping

  • Tackles disinformation and privacy rights

  • Focuses on personal data protection

  • Emphasizes human and environmental rights

As the first global framework for ethical AI use, UNESCO aims to maximize AI's benefits while minimizing risks, providing countries with essential guidance.
