🤖 AI Godfather thinks AI will have emotions

Rowan Cheung • 4 minutes

Sign Up | Advertise | Tools | View Online

Happy Wednesday!

According to the “Godfather of AI,” AI has or will have emotions.

Might want to stop trying to trick ChatGPT…

In today’s AI rundown:

  • 🤖 “Godfather of AI” thinks AI has or will have emotions

  • 🇯🇵 Japan Ministry to develop AI supercomputer

  •  61% of Americans think AI could spell end of humanity

  • 🛠️ 5 New AI tools and 3 quick hits

GEOFFREY HINTON

🤖 ”Godfather of AI” thinks AI has or will have emotions

Image source: Chloe Ellingson, New York Times

The Rundown: Geoffrey Hinton—“the Godfather of AI,” who famously left Google to talk about AI freely, said at a recent talk that he thinks AI already has or will have, emotions.

Details:

  • Hinton believes that deep learning can achieve and even surpass human-like intelligence.

  • During a talk at King's College in London, he suggested that AI systems could have feelings like frustration and anger.

  • His view is based on a definition of feelings that involves relating hypothetical actions to communicate emotional states, which AI systems can do.

  • Hinton refrained from expressing this idea publicly earlier due to the resistance he faced regarding his first thesis about superior AI threatening humanity.

Is this our reminder to say our please and thank yous to ChatGPT?

JAPAN

🇯🇵 Japan Ministry to develop AI supercomputer

The Rundown: Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry has announced plans to develop a supercomputer to help advance the country’s AI industry.

Details:

  • The existing computing power in Japan has been insufficient for generative AI development, leading to reliance on foreign cloud services.

  • The new supercomputer project will cost around $450 million and will be operational by 2025, with a processing speed of 100 petaflops.

  • It will be operated by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and open to Japanese brands.

  • The supercomputer could accelerate Japan's progress in AI and position it as a leader in AI research and development on the global stage.

Why it matters: A couple of weeks ago, we heard Japan was pushing AI in the educational system, and now they’re building the supercomputer. Japan clearly believes in the future of AI and is investing heavily.

IPSOS

61% of Americans think AI could spell end of humanity

The Rundown: According to a survey conducted by Ipsos, 61% of Americans believe the fast-paced growth of AI could endanger the future of humanity.

Key points:

  • The survey showed that the proportion of people expecting negative consequences from AI is three times higher than those who don't, with 61% expressing concerns and only 22% disagreeing.

  • The Future of Life Institute, behind the "open letter" demanding a pause in AI research, views the current moment as similar to the beginning of the nuclear era.

  • While some experts, like Geoffrey Hinton, emphasize the pressing risks to humanity, others such as Jaron Lanier, Bill Gates, and Jürgen Schmidhuber, disagree with this sentiment.

Our opinion: 61% is shockingly high. If there’s one thing to take away from this survey, it’s that mass education about the potential benefits of AI, as well as the potential dangers to society is of the utmost importance right now.

OPENAI

🤖 Huge ChatGPT update allows ‘custom instructions’

The Rundown: OpenAI has released ‘Custom instructions,‘ a huge update to ChatGPT. It gives you more control over responses by setting instructions for the model to remember across all conversations.

Details:

  • Allows you to insert two prompts of up to 1500 characters for ChatGPT to remember across conversations

  • Available in Beta for Plus users (everywhere except for the UK and EU) and ‘coming soon’ to free users

  • To enable, click the three dots under your ChatGPT history → Settings & Beta → Beta Features → Custom Instructions

  • Besides custom instructions, OpenAI has also increased GPT-4’s message cap from 25 to 50 every 3 hours

Insane examples (within the past 12 hours):

  • Nick Dobos showed us how to recreate babyAGI

  • Roman Semenov jailbroke ChatGPT against previous instructions

This update comes just 11 days after the release of Code Interpreter. The production speed of OpenAI is truly incredible.

GOOGLE

🗞️ Google’s “Genesis“ AI can write news articles

The Rundown: Google is actively meeting with news organizations to pitch an AI tool, code-named "Genesis," that can write news articles.

Details:

  • The tool has been pitched to several publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the owner of The Wall Street Journal

  • Some executives found it "unsettling," expressing concerns about AI producing inaccurate news stories

  • Google clarifies that the AI-enabled tools are not meant to replace journalists but rather to act as co-pilots

Our take: Will AI replace clickbait journalists? Possibly. Will AI replace fact-checking? No. The role of investigative journalism and hard fact-checking will be more important than ever in the age of AI-generated content.

NEW YORK POLICE

🚔 Police use AI to catch drug trafficker

The Rundown: Police in New York used an AI-driven platform called Rekor to identify and apprehend a drug trafficker named David Zayas.

Details:

  • The platform uses an automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) system with 480 cameras to scan 16 million vehicles a week, collecting data like license plate numbers, make, and model

  • Rekor's software analyzes regional traffic patterns and records vehicle trajectories to identify suspicious behavior

  • By assessing Zayas' travel patterns between Massachusetts and upstate New York, the algorithm determined that his activity was similar to a drug trafficker

Our take: While AI allowing law enforcement to identify criminal behavior is amazing, it’s slightly concerning to think of the potential for misuse and invasion of privacy.

Good morning, AI enthusiasts!

Apple finally caved and joined the AI frenzy.

Better late than never, I guess?

In today’s AI rundown:

  • 🍎 Apple enters the AI frenzy with ‘Apple GPT‘

  • 🧠 Study shows ChatGPT has gotten ‘dumber‘

  • 🕵️ British spies use AI to disrupt Russia’s shipments

  • 🛠️ 7 New AI tools and 3 quick hits

Read time: 3 minutes

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

APPLE

🍎 Apple enters the AI frenzy with ‘Apple GPT‘

The Rundown: Apple is (finally) entering the AI arena with its own artificial intelligence tools, including a conversational AI chatbot named "Apple GPT," to compete with leading AI chatbots.

Key points:

  • Apple has developed a framework called "Ajax" and has deployed a chatbot dubbed “Apple GPT” within internal systems

  • Apple GPT will compete directly against leading AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Bard

  • A consumer product is aimed for next year

Why it matters: Apple is quite far behind the competition, but they have the software, hardware, and pre-existing ecosystem to be a massive competitor to existing chatbots.

The real question: will Siri finally turn into the JARVIS that it was inspired by?

OPENAI

🧠 Study shows ChatGPT has gotten ‘dumber‘

The Rundown: A recent Stanford and UC Berkeley study found that GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 has worsened in quality since March 2023.

GPT-4 comparisons from March to June 2023:

  • Finding prime numbers: down from 98% to 2.4%

  • Writing good code: down from 52% to 10%

  • Chain of thought reasoning: significantly more mistakes

Potential reasons:

  • OpenAI may be prioritizing speed and cost savings over the quality

  • The model could be learning from less accurate user inputs over time

  • For safety reasons, the model might be designed to say 'no' to more questions

Noteworthy: The true root cause of ChatGPT getting “dumber“ remains unclear. The OpenAI team is now looking into the reports that users have shared from the comments of the many viral posts on Twitter yesterday.

UNITED KINGDOM MI6

🕵️ British spies use AI to disrupt Russia’s shipments

The Rundown: UK's MI6 is using AI to disrupt the supply of critical weapons to Russia, according to MI6 Chief Richard Moore.

Key Points:

  • MI6 is using AI to enhance human judgment in global intelligence

  • AI is an asset that makes information “infinitely more accessible”

  • UK and its allies are pushing to master the ethical and safe use of AI

  • Moore maintained that AI wouldn't replace human agents, despite its increasing influence on global intelligence

Noteworthy: Aside from MI6, numerous intelligence agencies, including the CIA and FBI in the US, are exploring how to use AI in their operations.
