GOOGLE

💻 Google reveals “Project IDX"

The Rundown: Google has introduced Project IDX, an AI-enabled browser-based development environment for building web and multiplatform apps.

Details:

  • It aims to help developers write code faster and higher-quality code by leveraging AI innovations.

  • The platform integrates with Google's Codey AI model for smart code completion and a chatbot.

  • The IDX chatbot assists with coding questions but has room for improvement in direct code manipulation and context awareness.

Our take: AI is already supporting developers to speed up work at blazing speeds and Google is here to join the party. While no one has actually tried it yet (it’s on waitlist), it feels like this one is going to be big.

LABGENIUS

🧪 AI is building unimaginable antibodies

The Rundown: Scientists found AI capable of building antibodies designed in a way unintuitive to the human process.

Key points:

  • The human approach to protein engineering involves making tiny changes until you find something that works.

  • The problem is that, sometimes, this leads to a scientist endlessly optimizing for something that only works a little.

  • Introducing AI to this process has led to discovery of unconventionally designed molecules that would never have been found by a human.

Our thoughts: All these AI-powered healthcare advances are stacking up pretty fast. How soon until the compounding effect kicks in and the healthcare as we know it is transformed for the better?

The Rundown: Nvidia continues to bring heat to the AI chip game. The company unveiled a new blazing-fast processor called GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip designed for massive AI models at SIGGRAPH 2023.

Key points:

  • Packed with 141GB of next-gen memory, GH200 can handle huge AI models for nonstop predictions and content creation.

  • Nvidia says the cost of powering LLMs will ‘drop significantly’.

  • The new chip will help Nvidia flex on rivals like AMD, Google, and Amazon trying to take a bite of the lucrative AI silicon market.

  • Nvidia also announced major upgrades to its Omniverse platform, a new AI Workbench for custom enterprise models, and partnerships with Hugging Face and Adobe.

GOOGLE & UMG

🎧 Google and UMG negotiate AI in music

The Rundown: Google and Universal Music Group are discussing whether to license artists’ melodies and vocals for AI-generated music.

Key points:

  • They’re working to develop a tool that allows users to create AI-generated music using an artist's voice, lyrics, or sounds.

  • The proposed deal would involve paying copyright holders for the right to create music while giving artists the choice to opt in.

  • Warner Music Group is also reportedly discussing a similar product with Google.

Why it matters: This is a make-it-or-break-it moment for AI-generated music. If the deals fall through and labels decide to exclude their property from training datasets, it’ll be much longer before we see high-quality AI music.

OPENAI

⚡️ OpenAI launches GPTBot to improve AI models

The Rundown: OpenAI just launched GPTBot, a web crawler that automatically scrapes data from the internet for improving future AI models (GPT-5, we’re looking at you).

Key points:

  • GPTBot filters out paywall-restricted and policy-violating sources but allows site owners to choose whether to grant access.

  • Website owners can restrict GPTBot by modifying their robots.txt file.

  • This raises legal and ethical concerns regarding the use of scraped web data for training AI systems, copyright infringement, and model degradation.

Our thoughts: OpenAI just launched a web crawler working 24/7 scraping the internet. Expected, but still slightly concerning.

  • In the past 6 months, Bing has completely changed its business, adding several AI tools to its products.

  • Bing Image Creator generates images with AI, the mobile app makes AI search capabilities available in your pocket, and more.

  • The team shares a positive outlook on the future and says a lot more can be expected in the next 6 months.

Our take: Not even my grandma used Bing 7 months ago, and now it’s the coolest kid (browser) on the block. Things like this really provide perspective on just how fast AI is moving.

APPLE & AMAZON

🍎 Apple and Amazon go ‘all-in’ on AI

The Rundown: Tim Cook just said that Apple is “building AI into every product it’s building”, while Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said, “Every single team at Amazon is now working on AI”. Big tech is going all-in on AI.

Key points:

  • Apple has been researching generative AI for years and is increasing its investment in these technologies, Cook emphasized.

  • Every business within Amazon has multiple generative AI initiatives revealed Jassy.

  • Both companies are increasing their R&D spending on AI, indicating a strong commitment to future advancements in the field.

Our thoughts: With nearly every single major tech company prioritizing AI, we’re in for a wild next couple of years. We’re truly just at the tip of the iceberg.

TOGETHER WITH CIRCLEBACK

❤️‍🔥 Use AI to NEVER take meetings notes again

The Rundown: Circleback is the hottest AI notetaker on the market. It focuses on giving you the most useful and accurate meeting notes.

In addition to accurate meeting notes, Circleback:

  • Automates action items to increase accountability

  • Gives you answers to questions using the context of your meetings, i.e. “Which client mentioned they’re going to a conference in Chicago?”

Try it for free and start actually paying attention in your meetings.

UCL

🎧 Study shows deepfake audio is getting scary realistic

The Rundown: A study by University College London found that humans can only detect deepfake speech 73% of the time.

Details:

  • Researchers used 50 deepfake speech samples in multiple languages and tested them on 529 participants.

  • Familiarization treatments and repeated exposure did not significantly improve recognition accuracy for deepfake speech.

  • Combining multiple human judgments, known as “crowd performance,” was most effective in spotting the deepfake speech.

From the study: "Our results suggest the need for automated detectors to mitigate a human listener's weaknesses."

Scammers are on the rise, folks. And with AI deepfake audio improving over time, they’re only going to get more realistic.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

OPENAI

🧠 New ChatGPT updates to enhance user experience

The Rundown: OpenAI released an epic new feature for ChatGPT, allowing it to show suggested follow-up prompts at the bottom of outputs. They also just tweeted that they’ll be rolling out more updates over the weekend.

Here’s what’s coming:

  • Plus users can upload multiple files for analysis with the Code Interpreter beta.

  • Keyboard shortcuts, such as ⌘ (Ctrl) + Shift + C to copy code blocks, introduced to improve efficiency.

  • Staying logged in for more than two weeks, and defaulting to GPT-4 for ‘Plus’ users.

Our thoughts: The attention to detail by the OpenAI team here is admirable. Amidst all the AI chaos, they’re still honing in to user feedback.

But a message to OpenAI (if they’re reading): when can I get my precious Browsing mode back?!

TOGETHER WITH INCOGNI

🫣 Erase yourself from the web

The Rundown: Data brokers make money off your personal information every day. They buy your data – home addresses, health information, contact details – and sell it to the highest bidder. Incogni scrubs your personal information from the web.

Kick back and worry less about health insurers raising your rates based on info from data brokers, scammers taking out loans in your name, and all the other terrible things bad actors do with personal data.

And the best thing is: The Rundown readers exclusively get 55% off Incogni annual plan with code ‘RUNDOWN’. Remove your personal data from the web now.

NORTHWELL HEALTH

🏥 AI helps quadriplegic man move and feel again

The Rundown: Researchers have used AI-powered brain implants to restore movement and sensation for a man who was paralyzed from the chest down.

The story:

  • Keith Thomas became quadriplegic after a diving accident in 2020.

  • Scientists at Northwell Health's Feinstein Institutes performed a "double neural bypass" with brain microchips controlling movement and touch sensation.

  • Brain signals activate electrodes on Thomas' spine and muscles, enabling arm movement when he thinks about it.

  • Within four months, he doubled his arm strength.

  • Most importantly, researchers believe the bypass could lead to lasting natural recovery.

Our thoughts: Healthcare is one of those fields AI will do wonders in. This is a prime example: before this, there was no cure for quadriplegia.

But that’s not all — just recently, AI improved breast cancer detection rate by 20%, and AI detected signs of Parkinson’s 15 years before other symptoms. And those are just a few examples. AI will save lives.

IBM & NASA

🌎 IBM and NASA tackle climate change using AI

The Rundown: IBM and NASA have teamed up to apply AI in analyzing the Earth's climate, and now they’ve open-sourced the AI model on Hugging Face, making it widely available to the public.

Details:

  • The goal is to provide an easier and faster way for researchers to gain insights from large datasets related to Earth's systems.

  • Open source is emphasized as essential to accelerate discovery in areas like climate change.

  • NASA estimates 250,000TB of data from new satellite missions by 2024.

Why it matters: The open-sourcing of the model allows more researchers to access otherwise inaccessible data, increasing the chances of significant breakthroughs in climate change.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

META

💬 Meta is prepping AI chatbots with various personas

The Rundown: Meta is working on the release of chatbots with different personas, which could come as early as next month, according to a report from the Financial Times.

Key points:

  • The chatbots will take on various personalities, including a surfer and Abraham Lincoln.

  • The launch is aimed to increase engagement on Meta's platforms, enabling search and recommendations.

  • During Meta's recent earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg mentioned building new AI-powered products with roles as assistants, coaches, etc.

Why it matters: The way we interact with computers will look completely different in a few years.

With Character AI’s (talking chatbot platform) recent data indicating that they have around a whopping 30-minute avg. session duration, there’s no wonder Meta is making this move.

UBER

🚖 Uber is developing an AI chatbot

Image source: The Guardian, Photograph: Fifg/Alamy

The Rundown: Uber Technologies Inc. is developing an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot to integrate into its app.

Details:

  • The purpose of the chatbot is to enhance customer service and automate tasks in the app.

  • Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, confirmed the ongoing work on the chatbot without providing specific details on its capabilities.

  • DoorDash and Instacart are also developing similar chatbot systems. DashAI speeds up orders, while "Ask Instacart" uses OpenAI's API to answer food prep questions.

Noteworthy: Uber has 118 million daily active users. That’s AI rolled out to ~1.6% of the entire world in one go.

Llama 2

🤖 Watchdog says Meta's LLaMa 2 is NOT open source

The Rundown: The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has accused Meta of misusing the term "open source" and argues that LLaMa models' license, like LLaMa 2, doesn't align with the open source definition (OSD).

Key Points:

  • LLaMa 2's license “violates” open-source principles by restricting commercial use, certain applications, and denying developers full sovereignty.

  • Open-source licenses would have to give developers full sovereignty over the technology used and its benefits.

Our take: If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the past, it’s don’t mess with the open-source community.

GOOGLE

🟢 Google plans to upgrade Assistant with AI

The Rundown: According to an internal email sent to employees, Google plans to upgrade its Assistant by giving it generative AI capabilities, similar to Bard or ChatGPT.

Details:

  • The shift will change how Assistant works for consumers, developers, and Google's employees

  • The company is reorganizing teams working on Assistants, and some layoffs will occur as part of the move.

  • The revamped Assistant work has already started, beginning with the mobile version of the product.

  • Amazon is making similar moves, working on an AI-powered reboot for Alexa.

Our take: The original Google Assistant already had significant backlash over privacy concerns, and I’m assuming adding AI to the mix won’t help. Regardless, it’s still cool to see how fast Google has been pushing AI lately.

PALANTIR

🛩️ Palantir CEO advocates for AI weapons

The Rundown: Alex Karp, the CEO of military technology company Palantir, wrote an op-ed in The New York Times advocating for the incorporation of AI into defense and military technology.

Key points:

  • Karp disagrees with the sentiment of pausing AI development, especially in military applications, to protect the United States.

  • Karp says the fears of AI are secondary to the benefits of AI.

  • Palantir uses AI for target selection, mission planning, and more in its military technology.

Noteworthy: Karp’s statements reflect Marc Andreessen’s recent statement that the greatest AI-related risk is “China winning global AI dominance.“

But AI and military technology? You got to admit that sounds a bit freaky.

AI INFLUENCERS

🛍️ AI influencers sign million-dollar deals

The Rundown: Virtual influencers (created using AI) like Lil Miquela, Imma, and Shudu are already raking in MILLIONS of dollars through deals with fashion giants such as Dior, Calvin Klein, Chanel, and Prada.

Details:

  • Famous examples of virtual influencers include Lil Miquela (2.7 million Instagram followers), and Bermuda (244,000 Instagram).

  • Lil Miquela is projected to earn £9 million this year ($11.5m USD)

  • The virtual influencer industry is estimated to be worth £3.5 billion and is expected to grow by 26% by 2025.

Why it matters: The reality is, the trend of AI-generated influencers is just beginning. These ‘influencers’ are already raking in millions, and the line behind what’s real and fake is only getting thinner.
