AI IN THE COURTROOM

👩‍⚖️ No copyright for AI, federal judge rules

Source: Midjourney

The Rundown: A federal judge slapped down a lawsuit trying to get copyright protection for art created by AI systems alone — upholding the longstanding rule that human creators have to be involved.

Details:

  • Stephen Thaler sued after the U.S. Copyright Office rejected his application to copyright an artwork generated by his AI system called the “Creativity Machine”.

  • The judge ruled copyright law has never extended protection to "new technology operating without any human guidance."

  • The decision cited several precedents establishing need for human creativity and choices — an important distinction as the line between AI and personal creation becomes increasingly blurred.

Why it matters: The age of robot artists has not yet arrived in the eyes of the law — but as AI’s creativity keeps improving, pressure to grant them some copyright freedoms may mount.

GEOPOLITICS & AI

💣 US and China accelerate military AI arms race

Source: Midjourney

The Rundown: US and China are rapidly developing AI drones, vehicles, and surveillance to gain an edge in autonomous warfare capabilities, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

Key points:

  • A study found a third of US and China's military AI contracts are for intelligent and autonomous vehicles — and estimated that each country is spending billions on military AI R&D.

  • The current conflict in Ukraine has been cited as one of the first major testing grounds for AI drone technology.

  • AI image analysis for reconnaissance and surveillance is another growing area of interest for military power.

Why it matters: As AI creates a new arms race, oversight and cooperation are sorely needed to avoid catastrophe. Is the world ready for a new era of warfare carried out almost entirely by artificial intelligence instead of humans?

SNAPCHAT

👻 Snapchat AI freaks out users with creepy glitch

Source: Midjourney

The Rundown: Snapchat's personalized "My AI" chatbot horrified users on Tuesday, inexplicably posting a strange video of a wall and ceiling to its public story before going silent.

Details:

  • The ChatGPT-powered bot startled the Snapchat community by sharing the ambiguous three-second clip out of nowhere.

  • It then went offline for a period, leaving people panicked that it posted images of their own homes.

  • When it returned, My AI had strange responses about pulling a prank and needing help.

Our thoughts: When personalized AI glitches get disturbing, it’s perfect clickbait to spread across social media and negatively impact sentiment. For Snapchat, the chatbot has unfortunately felt like more trouble than it’s worth so far.

SCIENCE & AI

🎧 Brain recordings decode a Pink Floyd classic

Source: Midjourney

The Rundown: UC Berkeley neuroscientists just reconstructed Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" using iEEG brain recordings and AI, allowing listeners to hear the song recreated from brain activity.

Key points:

  • The recordings came from electrodes on the brains of epilepsy patients listening to music.

  • AI software reconstructed rhythms, vocals, and lyrics from the brain waves, translating the data into muffled but discernible singing.

  • The findings help pinpoint brain areas processing musical elements and could lead to more natural speech from brain-reading implants.

Why it matters: This wild feat holds serious promise for understanding how our brains process sound and speech, and is a major step forward towards helping patients with speech difficulties better communicate.

  • 🛠️ 9 new AI tools

  • ♻️ How to repurpose content with AI

  • 🤖 3 quick AI updates

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

MICROSOFT

🔥 Microsoft tailors ChatGPT for business with Azure

The Rundown: Microsoft just dropped an open-source version of ChatGPT tailored for business use cases. Dubbed ‘Azure ChatGPT’, it promises more control and privacy compared to the public model.

Key points:

  • Azure allows companies to run ChatGPT privately on their own networks, touting built-in data isolation from OpenAI.

  • The model connects to internal data services and sources, and is available on GitHub to install and deploy.

  • It aims to boost productivity through code editing, task automation, and more — while offering businesses a more secure way to share their data with AI.

Why it matters: While ChatGPT mania swirls, Microsoft smartly launched an enterprise spin-off that will fill a serious hunger in the market. By addressing security concerns, Azure makes it easier (and presumably safer) for companies to tap AI's benefits.

AMAZON

📦 Amazon’s AI product review upgrades

The Rundown: Amazon is tapping into generative AI to create handy highlights that synthesize key points from customer reviews — helping shoppers quickly gauge product sentiment.

The details:

  • New AI highlights give a snapshot of product features and opinions from reviews.

  • The feature is part of ongoing efforts to improve utility of 125M+ reviews from shoppers.

  • It uses only trusted reviews from verified purchases, and Amazon continues to police fake submissions with both AI and human efforts.

Our thoughts: Amazon built an empire on customer reviews, so it's smart to keep improving its utility with AI — and streamlining a user’s shopping process is always a positive outcome. But keeping reviews legit amid AI's rise will remain an ongoing battle.

OPENAI

🚨 ChatGPT’s soaring costs could trouble OpenAI

The Rundown: According to AIM, popular chatbot ChatGPT costs OpenAI ~$700K per day and bankruptcy could be on the horizon by 2024.

Key points:

  • OpenAI's money problems are piling up faster than ChatGPT can spit out essays, totaling $540 million since launch.

  • After a wild surge, ChatGPT's user base dropped 12% from June to July as hype fizzled.

  • OpenAI aims to reach $200 million in revenue this year and $1 billion in 2024, but experts are skeptical.

  • GPU shortages and employees jumping ship to competitors are adding to OpenAI's woes.

Our thoughts: OpenAI kicked off an AI revolution with ChatGPT, but keeping the lights on for such powerful models isn’t cheap. Will they actually go bankrupt? Certainly not.

However, as leaner competitors with open-source models threaten, profitability needs to come quickly.

💻 Hackers expose flaws in leading AI chatbots

The Rundown: 3,500 participants are currently competing to uncover vulnerabilities in major AI chatbot models at the DefCon hacker convention in Las Vegas.

The details:

  • Researchers feel Chatbot security wasn't a priority at launch— and led to current iterations being easily manipulated to generate racist, biased, and harmful content.

  • Hackers have already tricked the top models with poisoned data, phishing emails, and other attacks.

  • Despite big tech companies pledging to audit their models, smaller startups jumping into AI may launch unsecured, vulnerable products.

Why it matters: AI's capabilities continue to rocket ahead, but security lags big time. And with chatbots spreading fast, big risks are coming. But plugging holes in the security vulnerabilities of these complex models won't be quick— or easy.

⭐️ How to level up presentations with ChatGPT

Need to deliver a captivating presentation?

Whether it's for clients, colleagues, or a conference, ChatGPT can help you nail down the perfect slides.

Step 1: Open ChatGPT and briefly describe your presentation topic and main points. Ex: "I'm presenting sustainable business practices in AI to a group of executives for a prospective partnership."

Step 2: Ask for suggestions like, "What key points should I highlight?" or "Can you suggest an engaging way to open my presentation?" If you have existing slides, try pasting the text in and asking for revisions based on your audience, criteria, goals, etc.

Bonus tip: Use ChatGPT to help craft compelling visuals. Ask questions like, "What kind of visuals or charts would best represent this data?" or "Suggest a relatable analogy for this concept." You can even generate the charts using ChatGPT’s Code Interpreter, and the visuals with a tool like Midjourney.

The Rundown: HeyGen just announced the 2.0 of their AI-generated avatar clones, and it’s so good that it’s giving people trust issues. Watch this demo and see for yourself.

Details:

  • In the demo, the founder of HeyGen cloned himself using 100% AI.

  • The upgrades include MASSIVE enhancements to video quality, voice cloning, and accents.

  • The voice and unique accent of the founder was cloned in a shocking 2 minutes.

  • It’s probably already undetectable by AI to 95% of the population, and will only get better in the next year.

Why it matters: We’re about to see a massive influx of AI-generated content across media, and it will be very hard to tell what’s actually real.

It’s time to educate your friends and family about what’s happening (or better yet, get them to subscribe to The Rundown ❤️).

GOOGLE

💻 Google reveals “Project IDX"

The Rundown: Google has introduced Project IDX, an AI-enabled browser-based development environment for building web and multiplatform apps.

Details:

  • It aims to help developers write code faster and higher-quality code by leveraging AI innovations.

  • The platform integrates with Google's Codey AI model for smart code completion and a chatbot.

  • The IDX chatbot assists with coding questions but has room for improvement in direct code manipulation and context awareness.

Our take: AI is already supporting developers to speed up work at blazing speeds and Google is here to join the party. While no one has actually tried it yet (it’s on waitlist), it feels like this one is going to be big.

LABGENIUS

🧪 AI is building unimaginable antibodies

The Rundown: Scientists found AI capable of building antibodies designed in a way unintuitive to the human process.

Key points:

  • The human approach to protein engineering involves making tiny changes until you find something that works.

  • The problem is that, sometimes, this leads to a scientist endlessly optimizing for something that only works a little.

  • Introducing AI to this process has led to discovery of unconventionally designed molecules that would never have been found by a human.

Our thoughts: All these AI-powered healthcare advances are stacking up pretty fast. How soon until the compounding effect kicks in and the healthcare as we know it is transformed for the better?
