Happy Tuesday!

Did you know it was World Environment Day Yesterday?

Unfortunately, it was outshined on Twitter by the most celebrated tech holiday of the year- Apple WWDC Day.

In today's rundown:

  • 🔥 Apple’s Huge Announcements at WWDC

  • 🧬 AI Officially in the Health Field

  • 🚨 EU Calls For AI Content Labelling

  • 🛠️ 12 New AI Tools & Resources

Read time: 4 minutes

🔥 Apple’s Huge Announcements at WWDC

Today at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference, WWDC 2023, the tech giant introduced a range of new software updates for its fleet of products — including the newly announced Apple Vision Pro Headset.

The hype leading into the event was real, but it’s safe to say they destroyed expectations. Here were the biggest things announced:

  • A 15” Macbook Air, now the thinnest 15’ laptop available

  • The new Mac Pro workstation, presumably a billion dollars

  • M2 Ultra, Apple’s new super chip

  • NameDrop, an AirDrop-integrated data-sharing feature allowing users to share contact info just by bringing their phones together

  • Journal, an ML-powered personalized journalling app

  • Standby, turning your iPhone into a nightstand alarm clock

  • A new, AI-powered update to autocorrect (finally)

  • Apple Vision Pro, the company’s new Augmented Reality headset. This $3499 headset will go down among the biggest tech releases of this decade. It’s a lot to digest, so we made a full rundown here.

An interesting takeaway- Apple didn’t mention “Artificial Intelligence” once but instead said “Machine Learning” when applicable.

PR training must’ve been tight for this one…

🧬 AI Officially in the Health Field

Carbon Health Technologies, a clinic chain, has unveiled a groundbreaking tool. It utilizes AI to generate medical records, freeing doctors to focus on patient care rather than administrative tasks by:

  1. Recording and transcribing patient appointments using Amazon Transcribe Medical.

  2. Combining the transcript with other information, like lab results and notes from the doctor, to generate a summary of the patient’s visit.

  3. Create instructions based on the summary, using GPT-4 for patient care and codes for diagnoses and billing.

The crazy part- almost 90% of submitted transcripts require no editing from the healthcare provider. So while we may not have robot doctors just yet, AI is already making an impact in the doctor’s office.

🚨 EU Calls For AI Content Labelling

The EU has called on major social media companies like Google and Facebook to label AI-generated content to combat fake news and disinformation.

Twitter has also been warned of swift sanctions if it fails to comply with the EU's new digital content laws, as the company withdrew from the EU’s code.

The EU has also made it clear that they are focusing on disinformation, particularly from Russia, urging companies to increase fact-checking efforts in Eastern Europe, where Russian disinformation campaigns pose a significant threat.

As the leader in tech company regulation, the EU is developing separate laws on AI and sees the code of practice as a stepping stone to prepare for the upcoming regulatory regime… a little dystopian, if you ask us.

Happy Monday!

Hope you took some time this weekend to relax from the pace of AI.

For us? Memes crafted by AI… but more on that shortly.

In today's rundown:

  • 🚨 AI Impact on Jobs: Already a Reality

  • 🔥 AI Art Shocks the Internet with Memes

  • 🤖 32% Can't Distinguish AI from Humans

  • 🛠️ 11 New AI Tools & Resources

🚨 AI Impact on Jobs: Already a Reality

According to data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, AI was responsible for nearly 4,000 job losses last month alone in the US.

US-based employers announced over 80,000 layoffs in May, a 20% increase from last month and a 287% increase from 12 months ago. Out of those 80,000 cuts, 5% of them were from AI.

While concerns for AI-based job loss persist, analysts also highlight the potential for job growth and economic expansion in the emerging AI industry. The question is: which one gets outpaced?

🔥 AI Art Shocks the Internet with Memes

As AI technology becomes more sophisticated, the internet has found some peculiar applications for it… (check out these scary examples)

People have been using AI to expand their favorite memes, creating uncanny and remarkably realistic images.

Through tools like Photoshop AI Generative Fill, images are expanded using algorithms to fill in the surrounding gaps.

While some are impressed by the lifelike results and the AI's imaginative capabilities, others find the images slightly unsettling.

As it gets easier and easier for everyday users to manipulate images in their own way, the concern for possible malpractice is on the rise…

🤖 32% Can't Distinguish AI from Humans

You might remember “Human or Not“ as a fun game that went viral on Twitter in April. Well, it turns out it was the largest-scale Turing Test to date, assessing people’s ability to differentiate between humans and AI bots.

In this game, participants engaged in two-minute conversations with bots or humans, resulting in over a million conversations and guesses analyzed.

Astonishingly, the results showed that only 60% of participants correctly identified AI bots - participants often relied on flawed assumptions, such as expecting bots to avoid typos, grammar mistakes, or slang, despite the bots being specifically trained to incorporate these features. Cheeky.

Overall, the experiment highlighted the difficulty in discerning between humans and AI, with 32% of participants unable to differentiate.

Happy Thursday!

Here’s a question - assuming the robots become sentient and take over… does that mean they have to choose where to live?

And, if that’s the case, where do you think ChatGPT would choose to live?

We’re thinking Barbados.

In today's rundown:

  • 🤖 UAE’s Open-Source AI Model Becomes Royalty Free

  • 🥕 Instacart Releases AI Shopping Buddy

  • 🇯🇵 Japan Hops On the AI Train

🚆 Japan Hops On the AI Train

In a surprising move, the Japanese government has announced that it will not enforce copyrights on data used in AI training.

The decision aims to propel Japan's progress in AI technology, which the government believes has been hindered by copyright concerns, particularly related to anime and visual media.

While some artists and creators express worries about the devaluation of their work, the academic and business sectors are urging the government to embrace the nation's relaxed data laws to drive Japan's dominance in AI.

🤖 AI threatens 'human extinction'

Happy Wednesday!

You know, we spent a lot of time fighting with people on Twitter about the potential dangers of AI…

Just to have the actual industry leaders swoop in and say the same thing.

In today's rundown:

  • 🚨 AI pioneers on red alert

  • 🤖 Majority of US adults never Used ChatGPT

  • 📈 Nvidia hits $1 trillion market cap… briefly

  • 🛠️ 11 fresh new AI tools & resources

Read time: 3 minutes

🚨 AI Pioneers On Red Alert

Some of the leading figures in the industry are sounding the alarm about the potential dangers of AI, comparing the risks to pandemics and nuclear wars.

In a statement released by the Center for AI Safety, over 350 executives, researchers, and engineers in the AI field (like, you know, the guy who runs ChatGPT) emphasized the need to prioritize mitigating the risk of AI leading to human extinction.

Concerns about AI's potential for spreading misinformation, eliminating jobs, and causing societal disruptions have been growing, and the urgency to address these concerns has skyrocketed as adoption ramps up.

If only someone were to have seen this coming… (we did, we wrote about it yesterday).

📈 Nvidia Hits $1 Trillion Market Cap… Briefly

Nvidia got a taste of a $1 Trillion evaluation yesterday, driven by the increasing demand for generative AI tools in the tech industry (but you already know that, because you read The Rundown 😉)

Although the stock price dipped to $401.11 by the market close on Monday, temporarily taking Nvidia out of the trillion-dollar club, the company's strong performance in the last quarter, with over $2 billion in profit, contributed to its valuation milestone.

Nvidia's chips play a crucial role as a key supplier for companies looking to incorporate AI into their products, and the company’s recent Computex 2023 keynote showcased a tidal wave of announcements for new tech.

🤖 Majority of US Adults Have Never Used ChatGPT

The Pew Research Center recently surveyed American adults' experiences with ChatGPT. And the results were pretty surprising…

The study reveals that while a majority of adults in the US are aware of ChatGPT, only a small percentage have actually used it — 14%, to be exact.

Most notable, however, is what those small percentage of adults are actually using the chatbot for:

  • 19% for entertainment

  • 14% for learning

  • 12% for work

So, while we sit here and devise plans to keep ChatGPT from taking all of our jobs, we have to wonder… how much of an echo-chamber are we really in?

Happy Tuesday!

We asked AI Eminem what’s in store today. Here’s what we got:

Nvidia's on fire, reaching that trillion-dollar desire, while lawyers get burned by ChatGPT's liar, and Bengio spits fire, screaming for regulation to avoid AI's dire.

In today's rundown:

  • 👁️‍🗨️ Nvidia reminds us why they’re coming for #1

  • 💼 ChatGPT goes to court… and lies

  • 🚨 AI pioneer calls for swift regulation to protect humanity

  • 🛠️ 10 fresh new AI tools & resources

Read time: 3 minutes

👁️‍🗨️ Nvidia Reminds Us Why They’re Coming For #1

As covered last week, California-based chip manufacturer Nvidia has been swinging for the fences in their recent developments, approaching a $1 Trillion market cap.

Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang kicked off COMPUTEX Taipei—Asia’s largest computer tech trade show, with some incredible announcements:

  • The full production of the GForce RTX 4080 Ti GPU for gamers (really big graphics cards)

  • Nvidia Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) for Games (AI helper for game devs, specifically in NPCs)

  • The success of the Nvidia Cuda computing model (allows devs to use powerful graphics cards to speed up their programs)

  • Production of the HGX H100 GPU server (really big computer for AI)

  • Nvidia’s partnership with SoftBank for its distributed data centers in Japan (gave them Superchips to host their own AI data)

  • Nvidia’s partnership with WPP, the worlds biggest advertising agency (using AI to generate ad creatives)

This all may seem like tech jumbo, and it is — but it’s precisely this tech jumbo that has propelled Nvidia to heights most of us never saw coming.

💼 ChatGPT Goes to Court… And Lies

A lawyer's reliance on ChatGPT for a court filing has backfired due to the AI's inclination to… invent facts.

Attorney Steven A. Schwartz submitted a brief, prepared with ChatGPT's assistance, in a lawsuit against Avianca, a Colombian airline.

Unfortunately for him, the AI-generated research included non-existent court cases — Avianca's legal team discovered the fabrications when they couldn't find the cited cases in legal databases.

So, good news lawyers: the robots aren’t taking over your jobs (yet).

🚨 AI Pioneer Calls for Swift Regulation to Protect Humanity

Yoshua Bengio, a leading figure in AI, emphasized the urgent need for governments to regulate AI technology to prevent potential risks.

Bengio warns that AI systems rapidly approach human-level intelligence, posing unforeseen dangers.

He urges scientists, citizens, experts, and governments to work together to understand potential negative scenarios of AI and highlights the risk of technology like ChatGPT “propagating disinformation.”

Bengio even went as far as to suggest making it illegal to impersonate humans — bad news for those troll farms (and ourselves, as you saw in the intro of this newsletter…)

Happy Monday!

Hope you took some time this weekend to unwind and relax — whatever that means for you.

For us? AI and Minecraft… but more on that in a minute.

In today's rundown:

  • 🧬 AI discovers promising antibiotic to fight superbugs

  • 🤖 GPT-4 agent shines in Minecraft exploration

  • 🚢 The quest to identify Titanic's necklace owner

  • 🛠️ 10 fresh new AI tools & resources

🧬 AI Discovers Promising Antibiotic to Fight Superbugs

Scientists have harnessed the power of AI to identify a potent new antibiotic capable of combating a dangerous strain of superbug.

Using an AI algorithm, researchers narrowed down thousands of chemicals to a select few that were then tested in the lab.

The resulting experimental antibiotic, named abaucin, demonstrated significant effectiveness in neutralizing Acinetobacter baumannii - a bacteria “superbug” that the WHO has categorized as a “critical threat” (it’s as scary as it sounds).

Further development and clinical trials are necessary before abaucin can be prescribed, but this achievement marks a promising step toward the use of AI in medical research. And fighting scary superbugs.

🤖 AI Agent Shines in Minecraft Exploration

In an exciting new study, the introduction of Voyager, an LLM-powered agent in Minecraft, has captivated both the research and gaming communities.

Voyager demonstrates remarkable autonomy, learning, and evolution without any human intervention — basically, it plays Minecraft on it’s own (and pretty well, at that).

In simple terms, the LLM uses GPT-4 to continuously improve its ability to complete its task, in this case, Minecraft, by adapting and rewriting its code. This is huge not only in developing autonomous agents, but also in improving human-less game testing.

Is this a great example of GPT-4’s ability to improve itself? Absolutely. Does it take the fun away from Minecraft? We’ll leave that up to you (we bet it can’t build a better house than us, though).

🚢 The Quest to Identify Titanic's Necklace Owner

In a remarkable find, a necklace crafted from a Megalodon tooth was discovered amidst the Titanic's wreckage.

And Magellan, a Guernsey-based company, is using AI to find its owner.

Due to regulations, the team couldn't retrieve the necklace, so they now hope to use AI-driven technology to identify the owner's family members.

They are tracing the individual who wore the necklace by analyzing original footage of passengers boarding the ship and employing facial recognition technology - and no, it’s not The Heart of The Ocean.

🤖 Swiss Scientists Rebuild Spinal Cord With AI

Scientists in Switzerland have recently helped Gert-Jan Oskam, who had been paralyzed from the waist down for over a decade, regain control over his lower body… with the help of AI. Check it out.

Oskam has been paralyzed from the waist down since 2011 from a motorcycle accident.

Recently, scientists have found a way to create a "digital bridge" between Oskam's brain and spinal cord, bypassing injured sections and allowing him to walk again.

The researchers captured Oskam's thoughts and, using an AI “thought decoder,” translated them into spinal cord stimulation, reestablishing voluntary movement. Better yet, he’s shown signs of neurological recovery, being able to walk (on crutches) with the implant turned off.

If anyone could help rebuild a spinal cord with AI, it’s the Swiss.

🧠 Neuralink Gets The FDA Go-Ahead

Elon Musk's brain-implant company, Neuralink, has finally received FDA approval to initiate its first-in-human clinical study.

Musk and his army of scientists have been gunning for the FDA green light since 2019, after countless rejections for… obvious reasons (we’d hope).

Neuralink is working on helping people with impaired vision see, solving many neurological disorders, such as depression, and eventually helping paralyzed people walk like our good ol’ Swiss friends.

While Neuralink has stated that they aren’t quite ready for a clinical trial yet, with Musk’s clear conviction in the project, we will surely see some moves on the technological chessboard soon.

🌮 Tako the TikTok Counterpart Takes the Stage

TikTok is joining the AI chatbot craze by testing its own chatbot called "Tako."

Tako appears on the right-hand side of the TikTok interface, allowing users to ask questions or seek recommendations. (Super innovative, we must say.)

The bot is being tested in global markets but is not yet available in the US.

The company plans to use this new technology to “radically change search and navigation,” allowing users to ask the chatbot questions and be redirected to relevant videos.

It seems like every tech company is rolling out its own AI chatbots nowadays. Anyone feel left out of the party? At this rate, we may have to launch our own…
