🤖 AI can FINALLY generate hands

Rowan Cheung • 3 minutes

Good morning AI enthusiasts!

We’ve got some heavy-hitting headlines in the world of AI today, including upgrades to Stable Diffusion, major drama in the AI creative community, and new AI research on childhood blindness.

PS: Today, we debut (another) revamp to our newsletter design! After continuously reading your feedback, we’ve decided to integrate more images and colors to make our newsletter look a little more friendly.

Now, let’s get into the rundown.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

STABILITY AI

🤝 Stable Diffusion can finally generate hands

Left: SDXL Beta, Right: SDXL 0.9. Source: Stability AI

In a since-deleted blog post (for unknown reasons), Stability AI announced the launch of SDXL 0.9.

The next model of its prompt-based AI image generator, Stable Diffusion, is expected to produce much more photorealistic images.

Best of all, however, is the fact that it supposedly will be better at generating hands (we’ll believe it when we see it).

Stability AI says the new model is “a leap in creative use cases for generative AI imagery.”

MARVEL

🎥 ‘Secret Invasion’ AI drama

Source: Disney+

Marvel Studios’ use of AI in the opening of Secret Invasion is next-level cool. However, soon after the episode aired, a report surfaced that the opening (created by AI) cost some people their jobs.

People were pissed.

Today, Method Studios released a statement noting that this isn’t the case:

“AI is just one tool among the array of tool sets our artists used. No artists’ jobs were replaced by incorporating these new tools.”

This is a great example of using AI to enhance- not replace, creative professionals.

RESEARCH

👀 AI helps detect childhood blindness

Source: Westend61/Getty Images

A recent research paper published in Lancet Digital Health presents findings on a new AI application that doesn't require coding skills or high-cost hardware.

The study reveals that the application can accurately identify severe retinopathy of prematurity (childhood blindness disease) using images sourced from a diverse dataset from the UK, Brazil, and Egypt.

Researchers indicate that this AI model has the capability to diagnose severe retinopathy of prematurity using images captured with a different device than the one initially used to develop the model.

The world's wealthiest individuals have seen their fortunes increase by over $150 billion thanks to a boom in AI-related stocks in 2023. This surge in AI interest has led to big-name investors flocking to companies they believe could continue to drive AI's rise.

Big Tech giants such as Meta, Nvidia, Microsoft, Google parent Alphabet, and Oracle have all experienced substantial gains. The already affluent founders of these companies have seen their wealth grow even further, with Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and Oracle's Larry Ellison each amassing over $40 billion more in personal wealth.

Why it matters: Investing in AI stocks isn’t just for the ultra-wealthy. There are plenty of opportunities for everyday investors to take advantage.

How’s this for ironic?

Alphabet Inc. (Google) has advised its employees not to share confidential information with chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Bard over fears of data leaks.

The rundown:

  • Alphabet is concerned that human reviewers may review chat entries

  • Amazon and Apple have issued similar directives to their employees

  • Samsung recently confirmed that its own internal data was leaked after staff used ChatGPT

🔊 Meta Releases New Text-to-Speech AI

Meta’s incredible pace of AI development continues with their newest release of Voicebox, an innovative all-in-one generative speech model.

The rundown:

  • Synthesizes speech across 6 languages

  • Can perform tasks it wasn't trained on

  • Has noise removal, content editing, style conversion, and more

  • Supports text-to-speech synthesis and cross-lingual style transfer

  • 20x faster than current models and outperforms single-purpose models through in-context learning (yes, 20x)

Interestingly, unlike Meta’s usual open-sourced approach to their AI developments, they are choosing not to make the model/code publicly available because the potential for misuse is too dangerous.

Prank calls are about to get next level. This is your daily reminder to inform your loved ones that anyone’s voice can be cloned using AI.

🤖 China’s President Welcomes AI Tech

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently discussed with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates the international impact of artificial intelligence.

Despite all the tensions in US-China relations, President Xi says they are welcoming U.S. firms to bring AI to China. Xi emphasized the need to harness AI for economic growth while still cautioning the risks.

Why it matters: This interaction highlights the possible expansion of U.S. AI technology to China despite current tensions. The decisions made here may shape the future landscape of the global tech industry.

🥷 Filipino Kids Catch a Theif Using AI

On a lighter note, a heartwarming story of AI justice is going viral in the Philippines.

At a recent venue, two kids performed a song on stage while their bag was stolen. Luckily, the venue’s security camera caught the theft on camera.

Despite the security footage's poor quality, the kids posted it on social media, leading anonymous Good Samaritans to use AI to enhance the thief's image and post it in the comments.

The bag was retrieved, but one cell phone remains missing - still, a prime example of AI tech aiding the common good.
