FOOD TECH

🐶 First lab-grown 'cultivated' meat approved for pet food

The Rundown: A Czech startup called Bene Meat Technologies just received the first-ever approval to sell lab-grown meat for pet food in the EU, marking a new production source for the industry.

The details:

  • Bene Meat received a license from the EU, allowing it to produce and sell pet food made from animal cells grown in a bioreactor.

  • This cultivated meat aims to be more sustainable, ethical, and consistent compared to traditional pet food.

  • The final products, made from living animal cells, could launch in 2024 pending deals with manufacturers.

The relevance: With many ditching the burnt brown chow for better options, this novel protein source could improve pet nutrition and lower environmental impact — the question is if prices can remain competitive with other options.

MEDICAL RESEARCH

🧬 First human trials of gene therapy lowers cholesterol

The Rundown: The first human trial of a precise gene editing technique called base editing successfully reduced LDL cholesterol levels up to 55% in participants but also saw adverse effects — including one death.

The details:

  • Biotech firm Verve Therapeutics tested their ‘base editing’ treatment VERVE-101, which disables a gene that regulates LDL cholesterol.

  • 10 patients with life-threatening high cholesterol received VERVE-101 injections, showing LDL reductions persisting for 6 months.

  • However, the trial also saw two concerning adverse events, including one death from a heart attack — raising significant safety questions.

The relevance: Heart disease remains an enormous health burden globally, so potential new options are exciting if proven safe — but safety (and ethical use) of gene editing will be a major hurdle as the tech continues to develop.

OPENAI

😱 OpenAI confirms it's working on GPT-5

The Rundown: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman just revealed the company is actively working on GPT-5 and expects to raise more money from Microsoft to advance the goal of creating AGI.

The details:

  • OpenAI is currently working on advanced autonomous software agents and GPT-5, requiring more data and computing power.

  • The company has massive costs of training increasingly complex AI models and is seeking additional funds from Microsoft.

  • Altman says the training will require procuring more data, both public and private, to improve the model.

The relevance: Last week at DevDay, Sam Altman said that this year’s announcements would look ‘quaint’ compared to next year. If GPT-5 is on the table… We may be in for a wild ride.

NVIDIA

💾 NVIDIA launches H200 GPU for advanced AI workloads

The Rundown: NVIDIA just announced their new H200 GPU chip based on the Hopper architecture, a powerful upgrade aimed at accelerating generative AI.

The details:

  • The H200 features up to 141GB of memory, providing nearly double the capacity and 2.4x more bandwidth than the previous A100 chip.

  • Upgrades allow the H200 to handle massive data requirements of large genAI models and high-performance workloads.

  • The H200 will start shipping in computer servers from major manufacturers beginning in mid-2024, and will also be available in NVIDIA's GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip.

Our thoughts: The H200's expanded memory and bandwidth seem optimized to push the boundaries of large generative models — and it’s getting hard to fathom the power these future chips will have. Will this be the push NVIDIA needs to join the top 5 largest publicly traded companies?

⚡️ How to build AI agents with GPT Builder

OpenAI's new custom GPTs allow anyone to build their own AI agents. By using Actions and Zapier, you can automate your work across 1000+ apps.

Here's an advanced tutorial on how to add actions to your custom GPTs:

What are actions? Actions allow you to connect custom GPTs to an external app using an API. For our example, we’re connecting my GPT to Zapier, allowing it to post to LinkedIn on our behalf.

Configure your GPT & Add actions: Ensure you have an existing custom agent set up first. In GPT Builder, click "Add actions" then "Import from URL" to connect an app API.

Import Zapier (example): Use Zapier to automate across 1000+ apps. Create actions in Zapier by connecting your GPT and target apps.

Configure the Zap: Link accounts, set triggers, and name the Zap. Select "Have AI guess" for custom fields.

Add Zap instructions: Paste the Zapier rule syntax under your existing GPT instructions. Then, edit your actions to customize rules with your Zap's name and confirmation URL.

Test and refresh: Confirm your GPT can authenticate and trigger the automated workflow.

With custom actions, your GPT agents can integrate with other apps to work on your behalf — automate your workflows seamlessly!

The Rundown: The SAG-AFTRA actors strike has finally ended after reaching a tentative deal, following months of negotiations over AI use and streaming residuals.

The details:

  • The 118-day strike was the longest in Hollywood history, halting many productions.

TRANSPORTATION

🛫 Samson Switchblade flying car takes first flight

The Rundown: The Samson Switchblade, a street-legal vehicle that transforms into a small airplane, successfully completed its first test flight after 14 years of development.

The details:

  • The Switchblade flies at 200 mph with a 500 mile range (35 gallon fuel tank), and converts from a motorcycle to a plane in just 3 minutes.

  • Over 2,300 reservations have been made for the $170,000 vehicle since its announcement over a decade ago.

  • The model qualifies as both a motorcycle and experimental aircraft to simplify regulations.

  • The first flight reached 500 ft altitude and lasted 6 minutes before landing safely in Moses Lake, WA.

The relevance: Once thought of as just science fiction, the Switchblade concept shows the potential (and demand) for a practical flying car. Though production, infrastructure, and regulations are still likely years away.

SUSTAINABILITY

🍽️ Ceiling sensors track food waste in kitchens

The Rundown: A startup called Positive Carbon is installing camera and lidar sensors in commercial kitchens to track exactly what food enters the trash bins, helping reduce waste by 50%.

The details:

  • The sensors are mounted on the ceiling above the food waste bins to autonomously monitor what is discarded.

  • Advanced data analytics are then run to uncover trends and patterns in what is being over-ordered, over-prepped, or over-served.

  • After a $2.3M funding round, Positive Carbon plans to expand to capabilities like tracking nutritional content in real-time.

Our thoughts: Automated waste tracking is a clever way to cut costs and litter in kitchens — and the potential is limitless for AI to further optimize the food chain while reducing environmental impact.

Welcome, AI enthusiasts.

Humane revealed its new $699 smartphone-disrupting AI Pin, delivering AI assistants and apps without the need for a screen.

In today’s AI rundown:

  • Humane releases details on smartphone-disrupting AI Pin

  • Study: AI can detect diabetes through voice recordings

  • 10 new AI tools to try

  • How to make your own custom GPTs with ChatGPT’s update

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

HUMANE

📍Humane’s smartphone-disrupting AI Pin is here

The Rundown: Humane has officially released more details on its hotly-anticipated $699 AI Pin, a wearable device for accessing AI hands-free through voice, gestures, and a built-in projector — with preorders set to begin on Nov. 16.

The details:

  • The lightweight gadget magnetically attaches to clothing and has no screen, instead controlled via touchpad, camera, laser, and built-in speakers.

  • Humane's AI mic software provides access to LLMs like ChatGPT and Microsoft models and aims to simplify AI use without downloading apps, settings, or always-on listening.

  • Demoed features include messaging, summaries, music, visual Q&A, photos, real-time translation, and nutrition analysis via food images.

  • Humane sees the device as a hands-free replacement to phones, and the subscription comes with its own number and service via T-Mobile.

Our thoughts: We first wrote a piece on Humane’s device in July, but these new details shed some serious light on one of the first pieces of consumer AI wearable hardware available on the market (startup since 2018).

Is it weird that of all the features mentioned, we’re most excited about the health and nutrition feature? (Demo’d at 5:55 in full launch video here)

TOGETHER WITH CONVEYOR

🔥 Automate security questionnaire answering with AI

The Rundown: There’s nothing more tedious than answering security questionnaires all day. We’d rather fight Bowser in Super Mario Bros.

So, Conveyor got AI to do it (the questionnaires, not fight Bowser 🙃).

And, they created a fun 8-bit video game to show you how it works.

Check out the interactive adventure about how you can use Conveyor’s GPT-security questionnaire automation software to destroy pesky ‘questionnaire villains’.

(It's really fun, we promise)

MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS

🎤 AI detects diabetes through subtle voice changes

The Rundown: Researchers have developed an AI system that can detect type 2 diabetes with up to 89% accuracy just by analyzing characteristics of a smartphone recording of a person's voice.

Key points:

  • The AI studied pitch, strength, vibration, and shimmer (breathiness/hoarseness) in 18,000 voice recordings from 267 people.

  • It flagged subtle differences imperceptible to humans but correlated with diabetes, with 89% accuracy in females and 86% in males.

  • The cause of why diabetes changes a voice is unclear — but may relate to vocal cord neuropathy and muscle weakness.

  • Broader trials are needed to validate accuracy — but If proven, voice screening via smartphones could enable low-cost diabetes detection.

Why it matters: With half of adults with diabetes going undiagnosed and 86% in low and middle-income countries, a test that requires just a voice recording would be a game changer for getting diagnosis and treatment to the masses.
