Welcome, Tech enthusiasts.

Linda Yaccarino’s bizarre interview last week confirmed that X has been losing active users ever since Elon.

The question is — does he care? Let’s dig in…

In today’s tech rundown:

  • 📉 CEO: X loses millions of daily users post-Musk

  • 🛹 Onewheel issues total recall after deaths

  • 🥵 Apple aims to cool hot new iPhones

  • 🛠️ 7 New products

  • 📰 7 Quick stories

TODAY’S HEADLINES

TWITTER/X

📉 CEO: X loses millions of daily users post-Musk

The Rundown: X has lost millions of daily active users since Elon Musk's takeover despite monthly user growth, CEO Linda Yaccarino confirmed in an eyebrow-raising interview at Vox Media’s Code 2023 conference.

The details:

  • X now has 225 million daily active users, down from 254 million pre-acquisition and 259 million under Musk last year.

  • Yaccarino seemed oblivious to her own platform's core metrics during the interview, unable to provide clear user numbers when asked.

  • Musk has shifted focus to "unregretted user minutes" instead of standard daily/monthly active user metrics.

Our thoughts: The user numbers confirm what many speculated, and Yaccarino’s performance certainly didn’t inspire a ton of confidence. But will Elon be fazed by any of this — probably not.

FUTURE MOTION

🛹 Onewheel issues total recall after deaths

The Rundown: Onewheel maker Future Motion is recalling all 300,000 self-balancing boards after four reported deaths between 2019-2021, after previously resisting warnings.

Key points:

  • Future Motion is now voluntarily recalling every Onewheel sold — after publicly feuding with the CPSC over issuing a recall in 2022.

  • Customers with newer models will get a software update adding safety alerts, but original models must be discarded for $100 credit.

  • This follows crashes from Onewheels allegedly malfunctioning when pushed to their limit, despite Future Motion previously claiming it found no issues.

The relevance: Having a massive recall and customer deaths after actively feuding with the Consumer Product Safety Commission is… Not a great look! Let’s hope additional safety features and the recalls can help better protect riders going forward.

APPLE

🥵 Apple aims to cool hot new iPhones

The Rundown: The newest iPhones are sizzling — and not in a good way. Apple said fixes are in the works for software issues that are causing iPhone 15 models to overheat and become too hot to handle, sparking complaints.

Key points:

  • A bug in iOS 17 along with app problems like Instagram are blamed for excess heat. Apple is addressing both ends.

  • Apple said no safety risks prevent iPhone 15 use in the meantime — but the issue threatens sales momentum.

  • The overheating has gained attention amid existing concerns about Apple's sales slump prior to September’s hyped release.

What this means: The newest iPhones are too hot to handle — the headlines write themselves! Apple will likely patch this up quickly — meaning the next time your phone will overheat is when we start inevitably getting FOMO for the shiny new release in a year.

AMAZON

⭐️ AWS introduces new generative AI capabilities

The Rundown: AWS just announced a slew of new products and integrations to make generative AI more accessible, including the general availability of its Amazon Bedrock AI service featuring Anthropic's Claude chatbot and Meta's Llama 2 model.

Key points:

  • Bedrock provides easy access to top foundation models and customization while ensuring security.

  • Anthropic’s Claude is optimized to understand queries, gather info, and execute actions as an AI agent for AWS customers.

  • Claude's launch follows Amazon's planned $4B investment in Anthropic for priority access to its models over OpenAI.

Why it matters: Amazon continues to make its presence felt, and its partnership with Anthropic puts it in the ring with the other AI heavy hitters. The added competition will accelerate development for the entire field.

MISTRAL AI

⚡️ Mistral AI unveils free 7B language model

The Rundown: Fresh off its massive funding round, French AI startup Mistral has released its first large language model, called 7B, freely for anyone to use and build on via open source license.

The details:

  • Mistral released the model under Apache 2.0 license — and claims its performance matches top small models at lower compute cost.

  • This pushes generative AI openness, though the model itself remains private — with Mistral's business model involving paid products.

  • The startup previously made waves with a record-setting $118M funding round for its mission of "making AI useful" with public data.

The relevance: Mistral’s sky-high valuation and funding had our curiosity, but a 7B parameter-free model really gets our attention (Django Unchained reference, movie buffs!). Will this new model be another major step forward for the open-source AI movement?

  • The glasses now come in classic Wayfarer and new Headliner styles with 10+ frame and lens options starting at $299.

The relevance: While wearables have been around — the coming AI integration may help these types of products take the next leap into mainstream.

WORLDCOIN

🌎 Worldcoin signups top 1% of Chile's population

The Rundown: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s biometric digital ID project Worldcoin reported over 200,000 registrations in Chile this week, surpassing 1% of the country's population.

Key points:

  • Users scan irises on Orb devices, create digital IDs, and receive $WLD tokens, though critics cite privacy risks of biometric data collection.

  • Worldcoin saw 9,500 registrations in one day in Argentina, showing growing traction in Latin America.

  • The milestone is positive news after troubled years for the startup — though adoption hurdles around regulation and perception remain.

Why it matters: Worldcoin’s iris scanning may seem dystopian to some, and sparks doubt in stable economies. The concept shines where trust in institutions is low — and its appeal in Latin America shows those fretting about privacy risks might be missing how Worldcoin aids the unbanked.

OPENAI

🌐 ChatGPT can now browse the open web

The Rundown: OpenAI just announced the return of ChatGPT browsing, with the chatbot now gaining up-to-date access to information across the internet via integration with Bing search.

The details:

  • ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users can enable web browsing, with the feature expanding to the free tier shortly.

  • The feature returns after being disabled months ago following the tool bypassing publisher paywalls.

  • With access to real-time data, the move greatly expands ChatGPT’s knowledge beyond its previously limiting 2021 training data cutoff.

  • We made some demos in this Twitter thread to test the power of the feature and expose some potential flaws.

Why it matters: While ChatGPT has undoubtedly been a revelation, its knowledge cutoff proved constraining. This new move takes the chatbot one step closer to being the ultimate replacement for traditional search engines.

Welcome, AI enthusiasts.

There has been a lot of smoke lately around OpenAI’s potential AGI timelines.

And with his first Reddit comment in seven years, Sam Altman just poured gasoline on the fire. Let’s dive in…

  • 🤡 Altman trolls AI community with AGI post

  • 🤖 3 Quick AI updates

OPENAI

🤡 Altman trolls AI community with AGI post

The Rundown: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sent the AI community into a frenzy yesterday after posting a (since edited) comment on Reddit that ‘AGI has been achieved internally).

Details:

  • The comment marked the first post from Altman’s account in seven years — which he quickly edited to dispel the spreading AGI news.

  • The original post from the /Singularity subreddit highlighted an account, “Johnny Apples” being deactivated — an anonymous source of past AI-related leaks.

  • The comment comes after several rumors surrounding OpenAI’s powerful internal models and potential AGI achievement.

Our thoughts: It feels like everyone is collectively holding their breath, waiting for AGI to become a reality — and in light of the smoke coming from those rumors, it’s an odd time to light a fake fire.

Only a couple hours after this drama — news broke out of OpenAI seeking to raise funds at up to a whopping $90 Billion valuation. Coincidence?

GEOPOLITICS & AI

🕵️ CIA builds proprietary AI system for intel

The Rundown: The CIA is reportedly creating its own AI tool in rivalry with China to help sift through the avalanche of publicly available data for intelligence clues.

Key points:

  • The system will be provided to all 18 US intelligence agencies to aid in open-source intelligence gathering.

  • It allows tracing information back to original sources.

  • The CIA says a chatbot could be the logical next step for distributing intel quicker.

  • The US maintains efforts to assert AI dominance, particularly against China's goal to be the global leader by 2030.

Why it matters: AI holds immense potential for intel, especially considering the endless amount of documents and data in the field. But its national security use warrants continual scrutiny — which is not likely to happen with a closed-door operation like the CIA.

The Rundown: OpenAI just shook up the world, announcing multimodal capabilities for ChatGPT. The new capabilities allow the chatbot to see (understand images), hear (understand speech), and speak when interacting with users.

Speak with ChatGPT:

  • Leveraging Whisper, users will be able to use voice to engage in a back-and-forth conversation.

  • The text-to-speech model has five different voice options for chats, created in collaboration with professional voice actors (demo).

Chat with images:

  • ChatGPT's language reasoning skills can now understand images, photographs, screenshots, and text documents.

Additional notes:

  • The new text-to-speech model is already being used in Spotify's Voice Translation feature pilot for translating podcast audio.

  • OpenAI is gradually enabling voice and images over the next two weeks for Plus and Enterprise users.

AMAZON

⚡️ Amazon bets $4B on AI startup Anthropic

The Rundown: Amazon reportedly plans to invest as much as $4 billion for a MINORITY stake in generative AI startup Anthropic in a massive move to boost its presence in the space.

The details:

  • Anthropic will shift its operations to AWS and use its chips to run models, providing needed computing power.

  • In return, Amazon gains a key AI partner amid criticism that it's lagging against rivals in generative AI.

  • The deal could be AWS' largest startup investment ever, showing its appetite for AI.

Our thoughts: Doubters said AWS was stuck in reactive mode on AI — but backing ChatGPT competitor Anthropic obliterates that notion. Amazon is now the newest challenger joining the AI race.

🎥 Embed text in video with Pika Labs

Last week, we featured a tutorial on how to make your own illusion art, like the images going viral across social media.

And yesterday, we wrote about AI platform Pika Labs bringing a similar feature to video!

Learn how to embed text in videos with the simple steps below:

Step 1: Head to Pika.Art and join the platform’s beta and Discord.

Step 2: Navigate to one of the #generate channels and begin with the command “/encrypt_text”. Type in the text you’d like embedded in the video in the ‘message’ section and the subject of the video in the ‘prompt.’

For the example below: /encrypt text Prompt: Crashing waves on a beautiful Caribbean beach Message: The Rundown

Step 3: Your video will generate directly in the Discord channel — tweak the prompt as needed, it may take a few tries to get a great output.

Happy creating!

  • 🎙️ Spotify clones voices for translated podcasts

  • 🛠️ 8 New products

  • 📰 9 quick stories

TODAY’S HEADLINES

NEURALINK

🧠 Neuralink gets green light for human brain chip trials

The Rundown: Elon Musk's brain-chip startup Neuralink has officially received FDA approval to recruit paralysis patients for a human trial of its implanted brain device.

Key points:

  • The trial aims to enable patients to control a computer with their thoughts alone via a chip that interfaces with the brain.

  • The company will enroll patients paralyzed by spinal cord injury or ALS — with under 10 people expected in the trials.

  • The 6-year study marks a major milestone for Neuralink, but experts say commercial clearance could still take over a decade.

The relevance: Neural brain implants mark a brave new world for science — but many worry about the safety implications. Adding that to Musk’s polarizing nature makes the technology ripe for skepticism.

With that being said — it’s likely that human brain implants at scale won’t be just science fiction for much longer.

REDDIT

💰 Reddit pays users for posts with new program

The Rundown: Reddit just launched a contributor program, paying users actual money based on the amount of Reddit gold they earn from quality posts and engagement.

The details:

  • Eligible U.S. Redditors over 18 can convert gold into cash monthly if they pass 10 gold and 100 karma thresholds.

  • Top karma scorers get up to $1 per gold, with lower tiers earning $0.90 per gold — and Reddit keeps about 50% on gold purchases.

  • The move follows Twitter's creator monetization program and arrives amid recent Reddit tumult over API changes that have limited developers.

Why it matters: Reddit is the latest social media platform seeking to rebalance value distribution in user-generated content. If done right, it could pioneer more equitable ways to reward community creators.

SPOTIFY

🎙️ Spotify clones voices for translated podcasts

The Rundown: Spotify unveiled an AI feature to translate podcast episodes into other languages using the hosts' synthesized voices, running on OpenAI's Whisper and a new voice replication model.

Key points:

  • English podcasts will have the ability to be translated into Spanish, French, and German using the hosts' own voice — with major creators like Lex Friedman and Dax Shepard already participating.

  • The tech goes beyond transcription, with AI replicating voices after translation and OpenAI's new voice tool enabling cloning.

  • Spotify aims to help podcasters expand their reach and make content more accessible across languages.

Our thoughts: This new feature has major implications for broadening a creator’s reach — eliminating the issue of language from the equation. In fact — with the advances in AI, we’re likely just years away from all language barriers being completely broken down.

In today’s AI rundown:

  • 📱 Meta bets on AI personalities

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

META

📱 Meta bets on AI personalities

The Rundown: Meta is reportedly developing dozens of AI chatbots with unique personalities to appeal to younger users on its apps — which could launch as soon as this week.

Key points:

  • Meta’s ‘Gen AI Personas’ aim to boost user interaction with features ranging from whimsical banter to practical coding aids.

  • Planned bots include a sassy robot named Bob (modeled after Bender from Futurama) and a human-curious alien named Alvin.

  • The company aims to drive engagement among younger users who have flocked to TikTok over Facebook and Instagram.

Our thoughts: AI personalities grab attention, but sustaining meaningful appeal is the real test. The bots mentioned might not exactly scream 'cool,’ but with the recent success of Character.ai, this might be a genius move by Meta.

TESLA

🦾 Tesla Optimus sorts objects autonomously

The Rundown: Tesla just revealed that Optimus, its humanoid robot, can now sort objects autonomously (and do yoga) — a significant update in the world of AI x robotics.

The details:

  • The video shows Tesla is making significant progress to Optimus — showcasing major improvements to fluid movements.

  • Similarly to the latest versions of Full Self-Driving, Tesla also notes that Optimus is now being trained with neural nets end-to-end.

  • Elon Musk recently predicted that Optimus will account for “a majority of Tesla’s long-term value.”

Why it matters: Optimus’ 5-finger hands and fluid movement may prove far superior for daily tasks compared to current industry-leading Boston Dynamics. It’s highly probable that mainstream media won’t think of Tesla as just a car company in a few years!
