HUMANE
📍Humane’s smartphone-disrupting AI Pin is here

The Rundown: Humane has officially released more details on its hotly-anticipated $699 AI Pin, a wearable device for accessing AI hands-free through voice, gestures, and a built-in projector — with preorders set to begin on Nov. 16.
The details:
The lightweight gadget magnetically attaches to clothing and has no screen, instead controlled via touchpad, camera, laser, and built-in speakers.
Humane's AI mic software provides access to LLMs like ChatGPT and Microsoft models and aims to simplify AI use without downloading apps, settings, or always-on listening.
Demoed features include messaging, summaries, music, visual Q&A, photos, real-time translation, and nutrition analysis via food images.
Humane sees the device as a hands-free replacement to phones, and the subscription comes with its own number and service via T-Mobile.
Our thoughts: We first wrote a piece on Humane’s device in July, but these new details shed some serious light on one of the first pieces of consumer AI wearable hardware available on the market (startup since 2018).
Is it weird that of all the features mentioned, we’re most excited about the health and nutrition feature? (Demo’d at 5:55 in full launch video here)
TOGETHER WITH CONVEYOR
🔥 Automate security questionnaire answering with AI
The Rundown: There’s nothing more tedious than answering security questionnaires all day. We’d rather fight Bowser in Super Mario Bros.
So, Conveyor got AI to do it (the questionnaires, not fight Bowser 🙃).
And, they created a fun 8-bit video game to show you how it works.
Check out the interactive adventure about how you can use Conveyor’s GPT-security questionnaire automation software to destroy pesky ‘questionnaire villains’.
(It's really fun, we promise)
MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS
🎤 AI detects diabetes through subtle voice changes

The Rundown: Researchers have developed an AI system that can detect type 2 diabetes with up to 89% accuracy just by analyzing characteristics of a smartphone recording of a person's voice.
Key points:
The AI studied pitch, strength, vibration, and shimmer (breathiness/hoarseness) in 18,000 voice recordings from 267 people.
It flagged subtle differences imperceptible to humans but correlated with diabetes, with 89% accuracy in females and 86% in males.
The cause of why diabetes changes a voice is unclear — but may relate to vocal cord neuropathy and muscle weakness.
Broader trials are needed to validate accuracy — but If proven, voice screening via smartphones could enable low-cost diabetes detection.
Why it matters: With half of adults with diabetes going undiagnosed and 86% in low and middle-income countries, a test that requires just a voice recording would be a game changer for getting diagnosis and treatment to the masses.

SAFETY TECH
📱 Your voice could reveal how drunk you are

The Rundown: A new study from Stanford University shows that smartphones can potentially monitor blood alcohol levels with 98% accuracy by passively analyzing changes in a person's voice.
The details:
18 participants read tongue twisters while drinking, allowing researchers to correlate voice patterns with intoxication.
Voice recordings were taken repeatedly and matched to breathalyzer tests, with machine learning isolating vocal features like frequency and pitch to correlate with intoxication.
The tech could provide non-invasive, real-time alerts against driving or other risky behaviors while intoxicated.
The relevance: As we also highlighted in a separate story in today’s Rundown AI (detecting diabetes from voice recordings) — there is serious untapped potential in analyzing audio. This type of innovation could be standard on future smart devices.

MEDICAL TECH
🦴 New composite stimulates bone regrowth

The Rundown: Researchers just developed an implantable scaffold made of bioactive glass and polymer that aids broken bone healing by inhibiting bacteria and promoting tissue regrowth.
The details:
The customized scaffolds are designed to fit severe break sites based on CT scans and replace missing bone.
The bioactive glass component raises pH to hamper bacteria and transforms into a bone-like compound called hydroxyapatite.
The polymer provides structural strength, with the scaffold degrading as the bone heals over 6-7 years.
The relevance: This clever composite elegantly combines infection prevention and accelerated healing. If proven, it can greatly benefit many patients — and reduce costly follow-up procedures.

FUTURE MATERIALS
♻️ New plastic can self-heal, be recycled, and feed marine life

The Rundown: Japanese scientists just developed an impressive new plastic that self-repairs when heated, can be broken down for recycling, and biodegrades into food for marine organisms.
The details:
The material, called VPR, is a modified epoxy resin that can completely heal scratches and remember past shapes when heated.
When discarded into seawater, 25% of VPR is biodegraded within 30 days into nutrients.
VPR is also over 5x more resistant to breaking than typical epoxy resins and can be chemically recycled 10x faster than normal plastic.
Potential uses include infrastructure, vehicles, electronics, and more.
The relevance: VPR seems to resolve multiple problems posed by plastics, like durability, recyclability, and environmental impact. Since it doesn’t seem like the world’s reliance on plastic is ending any time soon, this might just be the pivot we need.

🎨 Figma launches AI features to boost visual collaboration

The Rundown: Figma just integrated AI into its online whiteboard FigJam, helping users instantly visualize ideas and plans with customizable templates.
The details:
New features like Generate and Sort aim to automate tedious design tasks, while FigJam AI summarizes sticky note contents and auto-groups them into themes.
Users can generate templates for workflows, meetings, charts, etc., through simple text prompts.
The new features expand on the existing integration with ChatGPT-based Jambot.
Our thoughts: Design and collaboration are two areas where AI can turbocharge productivity — and automating and consolidating tedious tasks can free up creatives for higher-level work. Figma has been on fire in the AI design space.

The Rundown: YouTube is testing two new AI tools — a chatbot that can summarize videos and answer questions and a new AI feature to categorize video comments by topic.
The details:
The chatbot aims to provide more info on videos, recommend related content, and even quiz users on educational videos.
The comment summarization groups comments into topics using AI, helping creators better understand discussions on their content.
It's currently limited to English, Android, US, and Premium subscribers only, and comes as part of a broader push by Google to integrate AI across its products.
Why it matters: The new features to YouTube showcase Google’s continued push for AI (as we patiently wait for Gemini) — helping both fans and creators cut through the noise to have a better experience. Will every piece of content on the internet one day have its own chatbot?

ROBOTICS
🤖 China to ‘reshape world’ with humanoid robots by 2025

The Rundown: China just announced plans to achieve mass production of "advanced level" humanoid robots by 2025 in the country’s quest to reshape the world around what it believes is the next major disruptive product.
The details:
China's Ministry of Industry and IT published a strategic roadmap, laying out the goal to mass-produce humanoid robots by 2025.
The doc claimed the robots could have a disruptive global impact comparable to smartphones and electric vehicles.
Chinese startup Fourier Intelligence aims to manufacture thousands of bipedal robots by 2024 that can walk 3 mph and carry over 100 lbs.
The relevance: The accelerated timeline seems ambitious given the state of robotics… But if achieved, it would undoubtedly propel China to the forefront of automation — with major geopolitical and economic implications.

MEDICAL RESEARCH
🧠 Duke's brain implant decodes speech from thoughts

The Rundown: Duke researchers just developed a stamp-sized brain implant that can translate signals from the speech center of the brain into the words a person intends to say.
The details:
The prosthetic has 256 sensors and was tested on patients by recording brain activity as they said words out loud during surgery.
A decoding algorithm then predicted the sounds with 40% accuracy from just 90 seconds of speech data.
The team is working on a wireless version and improving decoding speed closer to natural speech.
Why it matters: This remarkable early research highlights the accelerating potential of brain-computer interfaces — which seem to be having a 0 to 1 moment with multiple significant breakthroughs this year.
This implant could someday help those unable to talk due to neurological disorders communicate!
