Welcome, Tech enthusiasts.

Chipotle's founder Steve Ellis’ new restaurant venture is serving up plant-based fast food — cooked and managed almost entirely by robots.

Is this new concept the future of dining, or is it too polarizing for the masses? Let’s get into it…

In today’s tech rundown:

  • Chipotle founder’s new robotic, plant-based restaurant

  • Right-wing figures pledge ads amid brand exodus from X

  • 9 new products

TODAY’S HEADLINES

FOOD & TECH

🌱 Chipotle founder’s new robotic, plant-based restaurant

The Rundown: Chipotle founder Steve Ells' new restaurant venture ‘Kernel’ plans to open in 2024 and will reportedly rely heavily on robots and automation and serve up a menu of ‘vegetarian fast food’.

The details:

  • Robots will handle most kitchen tasks like warming buns and pans.

  • The menu will feature meatless burgers, sandwiches, salads, bowls, and sides at Chipotle-like prices.

  • Ells believes automation allows for higher pay and benefits with a minimal human staff of just 3 per location.

  • Kernel's first location aims to open in Manhattan, with plans for 15 more in NYC over a two-year span.

The relevance: Kernel is a bold, futuristic concept — and certainly a polarizing one for eaters. The venture will be an interesting experiment in both robotic workers — and maybe spark a new ‘vegetarian fast food’ sector?

💰 Right-wing figures pledge ads amid brand exodus from X

The Rundown: As major advertisers continue to suspend campaigns on X, right-wing influencers have pledged ad spending to help support the platform.

The details:

  • Major advertisers including Apple and Disney recently halted ads on the platform, over concerns about content and Elon Musk's actions.

  • In response to the defections, several conservative media figures pledged ad buys from $50,000 up to $1 million monthly.

  • But their support totals under $2 million so far, compared to over $100 million annually from Apple alone.

The relevance: Elon’s polarizing moves have big advertisers running for the hills — and that revenue isn’t easily replaced, even with support of right-wing media. Further politicization also risks pushing other major spenders away.

Welcome, AI enthusiasts.

It’s been a wild weekend — with OpenAI’s shocking firing of CEO Sam Altman and new CEO sending shockwaves through the AI and broader tech world.

With tons of drama straight out of a Hollywood script, this weekend was one to remember. Let’s get into it…

In today’s AI rundown:

  • OpenAI board fires CEO Sam Altman, hired Emmett Shear

  • Meta dissolves Responsible AI team

  • 10 new AI tools to try

  • How to create custom lightning bolts with DALL-E

  • Amazon axes hundreds of Alexa jobs

OPENAI

😱 OpenAI board fires CEO Sam Altman, chaos ensues

The Rundown: OpenAI's board of directors abruptly fired CEO Sam Altman on Friday, leading co-founder Greg Brockman and dozens of other OpenAI staff to quit in protest. By Sunday evening, Emmett Shear was appointed the new interim CEO of OpenAI.

The timeline:

  • Altman was unexpectedly ousted on Friday, with the board originally citing “communication issues”.

  • Altman confirmed the news in a tweet, with co-founder Greg Brockman resigning and posting a timeline of events detailing the blindside move from the OpenAI board.

  • More details emerged, indicating the firing was likely orchestrated by OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever — with reported increasing tensions over the speed of development.

  • On Saturday, news broke that OpenAI staff set an ultimatum for the board to resign and for Altman/Brockman to RETURN, or else they would quit and join Sam.

  • The deadline passed without official news, though Altman tweeted, “I love the OpenAI team so much” which was then quote-tweeted by hundreds of staff members with a “❤️” emoji on X.

  • Speculation was rampant, with many believing the moves were made in response to AGI being achieved — Altman did say a day before his firing that there had been a massive discovery in the last two weeks.

  • Altman posted a photo of himself at OpenAI HQ Sunday afternoon, with reports indicating that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was leading discussions.

  • In a shocking turn, the board rejected negotiations and hired Emmett Shear, former CEO of Twitch, as the new interim CEO of OpenAI.

  • Following the late Sunday night news, chaos ensued, and dozens of OpenAI staffers quit, with more likely to follow shortly.

  • In a final twist to the story, Satya announced that Sam and Greg will join Microsoft to create a new advanced AI research team.

Why it matters: This was a weekend straight out of Hollywood — with the entire drama unfolding in real time on X. The firing of Sam Altman and hiring to Microsoft will only push the competition further.

But what did the OpenAI board see that caused Sam’s seemingly instantaneous fire? How many OpenAI employees will follow Sam or join competitors like Google and xAI? Will OpenAI be able to weather the storm ahead through the leadership of Emmett Shear?

More details to follow shortly. Stay tuned…

META

♾️ Meta dissolves Responsible AI team

The Rundown: Meta has reportedly disbanded its Responsible AI team, moving members to other AI product and infrastructure groups within the company.

The details:

  • Meta says it remains committed to developing AI responsibly and safely, but the dedicated team was dissolved.

  • Most Responsible AI members will join Meta's generative AI product team, with others moving to work on AI infrastructure.

  • The Responsible AI team had already seen shake ups during the the company’s restructuring and layoffs earlier this year.

The relevance: If there was ever a weekend to bury some negative AI news, it was this one. With all eyes on the Altman, Meta’s move flew under the radar — and comes during a time of heightened discourse over safety vs. acceleration.

⚡️ Create custom lightning bolts with DALL-E

It’s been a while since we’ve shared an image prompt — but sometimes, a new one comes across the timeline that is too cool to ignore.

Create these awesome custom lightning images by following the prompt below:

Prompt: "Create a minimalistic image where the sky is light blue, filled with a myriad of fainter stars, and perhaps a hint of a distant galaxy or nebula to add depth and color contrast. In the center of this tranquil backdrop, the only light comes from a series of thick, jagged lightning bolts. These bolts are the focal point of the image, converging to form a stark outline of a [SUBJECT] directly in the center. There should be no other details or objects, just the clear, unmistakable shape of a [SUBJECT] composed of these few powerful strokes of lightning. The image should evoke the simplicity and elegance of a line drawing, with the [SUBJECT] outline vividly glowing against the serene night sky.”

Replace [SUBJECT] with what you’d like to generate in the sky! For the example below, we used the term ‘AI Robot’:

💼 Amazon axes hundreds of Alexa jobs

Amazon just slashed ‘several hundred’ roles on the company’s Alexa team, citing shifting priorities and a focus on generative AI. The decade-old Alexa feels left behind as generative AI ushers in smarter tech, making older devices look primitive.

💰 Altman sought billions for AI chip venture pre-firing

Sam Altman reportedly raised billions from Middle Eastern investors for a new AI chip startup called ‘Tigris’ before his firing. The project aimed to challenge Nvidia's dominance, with Altman's side ventures likely complicating his relationship with OpenAI's board.

Welcome, Tech enthusiasts.

Though exploding before completion, SpaceX’s Starship rocket accomplished several pivotal milestones in its second test launch this weekend.

But is the polarizing public sentiment toward Elon Musk fueling an explosive discourse around the company’s ambitions? Let’s dig in…

In today’s tech rundown:

  • SpaceX achieves new milestones in weekend launch

  • 3D-printed robotic hand has human-like bones and tendons

  • 10 new products

  • 7 quick stories

Read time: 3 minutes

TODAY’S HEADLINES

SPACEX

🚀 SpaceX achieves new milestones in weekend launch

The Rundown: SpaceX's giant Starship rocket launched on its first ‘successful’ spaceflight, reaching speeds of over 15,000 mph before an explosion ended the test early.

The details:

  • While it didn’t achieve orbit, Starship successfully tackled several milestones.

  • The nearly 400-foot-tall Starship lit all 33 of its Raptor engines, marking a huge step in engine reliability.

  • The rocket achieved staging, separating the Super Heavy booster, which disintegrated shortly after.

  • The FAA will now oversee an investigation, formulating another list of actions needed before a third test.

The relevance: While the test seemed to hit new milestones, the public discourse felt overwhelmingly negative — focusing solely on the explosion. Despite not completing its full run, the milestones accomplished seem to be a significant step forward for SpaceX’s ambitions.

3D PRINTING

🤖 3D-printed robotic hand has human-like bones and tendons

Image source: Swiss Federal Institute of Technology

The Rundown: Researchers just 3D printed a robotic hand with internal bones, ligaments, and tendons using a new vision-controlled jetting technique — which could inspire future robot bodies and movement.

The details:

  • The hand was printed in one piece using soft, elastic polymers instead of the traditional rigid plastics.

  • An integrated laser scanner inspects each printed layer for flaws.

  • The closed-loop approach enables printing complete robots in one go.

  • The bio-inspired hand design is based on MRI scans of human hands and can sense touch, grasp objects, and even stop fingers on contact.

The relevance: Is this new 3D printing technique a crucial step towards more dexterous, bio-inspired robotics? Printing fully integrated robots also eliminates tedious assembly — an important detail for scaling up production.

YOUTUBE

🎶 YouTube reveals AI music experiments with artists

The Rundown: YouTube just previewed two new AI music experiments to clone artist voices and co-create tools with musicians in partnership with Google DeepMind’s brand-new AI music generation model, ‘Lyria’.

The details:

  • ‘Dream Track’ generates 30-second AI vocal tracks from text prompts.

  • Music AI tools also in development include humming a melody to generate instrumentals and seamlessly editing the style of a track.

  • Participating musicians include T-Pain, Charlie Puth, Sia, Demi Lovato, and John Legend.

  • It will be limited to a small test group as YouTube gathers feedback to shape future products.

The relevance: What text-to-image models did for unlocking new creative potential, new audio tools will likely do for music creators. The cherry on top is some seriously big-time musicians collaborating on the AI project.

⚙️ Meta releases new Emu AI video and image editing tools

The Rundown: Meta just announced two new AI-powered creative tools, Emu Edit, and Emu Video, being integrated into Facebook and Instagram.

The details:

  • Emu Edit allows users to make image edits with text instructions, with the model intuitively understanding without specific selections.

  • Emu Video can generate short video clips and animations using text prompts, images, or both as inputs.

  • Both features will be integrated into FB and IG, getting AI capabilities directly into the user’s hands instead of through third-party tools.

Our thoughts: Integrating generative AI abilities into mainstream apps like Facebook and Instagram broadens access and creativity — and is another great trojan horse for broader adoption and acceptance of AI.

AMAZON

🚘 Amazon adds online car sales with Hyundai partnership

The Rundown: Amazon just announced a new partnership with Hyundai to allow car purchases directly on the e-commerce giant’s platform starting in 2024 — a first for the company.

The details:

  • Select Hyundai dealers can list new vehicle inventory, while customers can browse and schedule delivery/pickup from the local dealer.

  • Alexa and AWS will also be integrated into Hyundai vehicles and operations as part of the deal.

  • Amazon has been slowly expanding into the automotive sector with virtual showrooms and parts sales.

SKYRYSE

🚁 New system automates helicopter emergency landings

The Rundown: Aviation startup Skyryse just developed the world's first automated autorotation system, allowing helicopters to safely land without power.

The details:

  • Autorotation landings are difficult emergency maneuvers pilots perform when engines fail.

  • Skyryse's system immediately recognizes autorotation landings — managing pitch, speed, flare, and other landing procedures.

  • Test pilots completed the first full automated autorotation landing in a Robinson R66 helicopter.

  • The tech aims to bring commercial airline safety levels to private helicopter flights.

Our thoughts: Helicopter flight isn’t for the faint of heart — and takes extreme skill for even the most experienced pilots. This new system can automate split-second decisions necessary in potentially life-or-death situations.

🩺 Forward Health launches AI-powered medical pods

The Rundown: Health startup Forward Health just secured $100M in funding and introduced CarePods, standalone stations that provide medical tests and diagnosis using AI — without needing onsite doctors.

The details:

  • CarePods allow users to get bloodwork, scans, swabs, and more with an attendant and touchscreen guide.

  • Available screenings include full body scans, heart health, thyroid testing, blood pressure, weight management, kidney and liver health, and more.

  • Custom AI reviews patient results, and the companies’ remote doctors can prescribe further treatment if needed.

  • A $99 monthly subscription provides access to all pod apps, tests, and doctor support.

Our thoughts: As primary care has grown more impersonal and reactive, this comprehensive AI option truly feels like the future of medical care. However, a lack of insurance coverage and general trust in AI will remain the biggest hurdles to overcome before true mass adoption.

MICROSOFT

💾 Microsoft unveils custom AI and cloud chips

The Rundown: Microsoft just announced two brand new custom-designed chips at the company’s Ignite conference — bringing production in-house to power the company’s AI and cloud workloads.

The details:

  • The new Maia chip is tailored for large language models like GPT that power Azure AI services.

  • The new Cobalt CPU is designed to run general cloud computing.

  • The company will deploy the chips in its data centers to power internal services before offering them as part of Azure.

  • Microsoft is still partnering closely with AMD, NVIDIA, Arm, and others.

The relevance: Not every company has the resources to bring chip production in-house — but Microsoft is doubling down on AI and playing the long game while ‘chipping’ away at NVIDIA’s monopoly on processing.

🚧 How to build (actually useful) GPTs

Everyone is churning out custom GPTs — but many aren’t taking advantage of the full power you can harness in the building process.

Here are a few tips to make your GPT stand out from the noise:

Integrate actions — Using actions to create AI agents is the most powerful feature for GPTs, but few are actually using it. As we went over in an earlier edition, you can hook up 1000+ actions with zero coding using Zapier.

Leverage unique data — Incorporate datasets to differentiate and provide an advantage over others. Just be sure to safeguard it properly (see below).

Promote your offeringsPrompt your GPT to recommend your own products or services when relevant. An example of how we incorporated promos into our own GPT here.

Protect your workUse prompts that guard against others accessing your instructions and data, preventing replication of your hard work. A good example of instructions to help safeguard your GPT from being copied here.

Follow these pro tips to create AI agents that are uniquely useful versus generic. Your users will notice the difference!

SPACEX

🚀 SpaceX gets approval for 2nd Starship launch

The Rundown: SpaceX just received regulatory approval from the FAA for a second test flight of its giant Starship rocket system, currently targeted for Friday morning.

The details:

  • The first test in April resulted in an accidental explosion.

  • Starship consists of the Super Heavy booster and an upper stage called Starship.

  • Both rocket stages are designed to be fully reusable and enable interplanetary travel starting with Mars.

  • If successful, the test will consist of a 90-minute flight followed by a descent into the Pacific Ocean.

The relevance: Nobody said revolutionizing commercial space travel would be easy. After the failed first test, Elon and SpaceX are ready for Round 2 — and success would mark a significant milestone for reusable rocket tech.

SMART TECH

💍 French startup launches world's lightest smart ring

The Rundown: French startup Circular just launched their new Circular Ring Slim, claimed to be the lightest and thinnest smart ring with haptic feedback.

The details:

  • Weighing in at just 2 grams, the ring is only 2.2 mm thick but packed with tracking sensors — able to capture 142 health markers.

  • A new haptic nav feature allows users to control functions by tapping, which provides vibrations and other tactile feedback that can be felt.

  • The vibrations also provide alerts and power a smart alarm to wake at optimal times.

  • The platform also features an in-app AI assistant, which analyzes user’s health data to provide insights and advice.

Our thoughts: As health tracking becomes more and more integrated into our tech, the race for the most unobtrusive and user-friendly models is on — and with tons of features and AI integration, this looks like it packs a serious punch.

AIRBNB

🏡 Airbnb acquires AI startup for $200M

The Rundown: Airbnb just acquired a secretive AI startup by the name of Gameplanner AI to accelerate the rental giant’s AI initiatives — marking the company’s first acquisition since going public.

The details:

  • Gameplanner AI has been in ‘stealth mode’ since 2020, with little known about what the company actually does.

  • What we do know, is that the startup is co-founded by Adam Cheyer, who previously launched Siri (later acquired by Apple).

  • The deal is valued at just under $200 million, according to sources.

Our thoughts: The broader unknowns of this stealthy startup make for an intriguing acquisition — and the move takes Airbnb one step closer to founder Brian Chesky’s vision of AI helping to build the company ‘travel concierge’.
