MILITARY AI

💣 Pentagon pushes ahead on autonomous AI weapons

The Rundown: The Pentagon is reportedly rushing “Replicator,” a new initiative to develop of thousands of lethal, autonomous drones and systems by 2026 — to keep pace with China.

The details:

  • The U.S. military’s "Replicator" initiative seeks rapid expansion of expendable AI attack and defense drones.

  • Officials claim humans will remain "in control," but experts see the inevitability of full autonomy within years.

  • Concerns also remain that the pace of AI development may outpace the military’s ability to rigorously test systems before deploying them.

The relevance: Lethal and autonomous in the same sentence is a frightening prospect — and one that needs serious oversight. The advancement of AI in warfare is likely to pose some major moral arguments in the VERY near future.

NVIDIA

💨 Jensen Huang urges FASTER AI innovation

The Rundown: While many are calling for a slowdown in AI development for safety concerns, NVIDIA founder Jensen Huang is arguing for acceleration — which he believes can unlock new technologies for understanding risks and guardrails.

The details:

  • Huang believes improving AI will provide more tools to make models safer over time, just as auto safety increased with tech advances.

  • He cited OpenAI's use of reinforcement learning from human feedback as an example of developing oversight tech.

  • Huang also thinks existing regulations can handle emerging AI apps — with different agencies overseeing implementations.

What this means: Jensen Huang believes by advancing AI, we can potentially develop more effective safety measures by using the tech itself. However, it’s not surprising to see the kingmaker of the AI chip world advocate for increased development.

🤖 How to create a simple GPT from natural language

In our previous newsletter, we hosted a poll on OpenAI’s new custom GPTs and received thousands of responses that you needed a tutorial to get started.

Here’s a very simple guide to get started on building your own custom GPT from natural language (we will release more advanced guides shortly):

Step 1: You can only access GPT Builder if you have ChatGPT Plus. Start by clicking the Explore tab, then "Create a GPT".

Step 2: Before adding custom instructions in the "Configure" tab, simply talk with ChatGPT conversationally to describe what you’d like to build to get a draft.

Step 3: Now that the basic drafts are done, click configure and optimize the GPT. For example, try uploading a file such as a spreadsheet to add data to your GPT to train it on.

Step 4: Chat with your GPT and you can see how well it follows instructions. If it doesn’t go as planned, simply chat with it about what you want it to do better.

Remember, these are the early days of the GPT Builder. If predictions come true and the new GPT Builder Shop (coming soon) becomes the new App Store of AI, you will have a huge headstart over others in the new GPT wave.

Welcome, Tech enthusiasts.

Meta is under fire AGAIN, with a court filing showing the company ignored over 1M underage user reports while collecting data from minors.

Will another fine stop the social media giant from chasing growth over user safety? Let’s get into it…

In today’s tech rundown:

  • Instagram's underage user problem exposed

  • Copper breakthrough could slash drug costs

  • 9 new products

  • 8 New products

  • Adobe hits record-level sales

  • Meta's Andy Stone is now on Russia's wanted list

  • Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

TODAY’S HEADLINES

META

🚨 Instagram's underage user problem exposed

The Rundown: A newly unsealed legal complaint alleges that Instagram has been knowingly collecting data on millions of children under 13, violating federal privacy law.

The details:

  • 33 U.S. attorney generals claim Instagram pursued underage users —despite being aware of their ages.

  • Over 1.1 million under-13 user reports have been filed since 2019, but Meta "disabled only a fraction".

  • The suit argues Instagram prioritized growth over complying with children's data laws, and fines could total hundreds of millions.

Why it matters: This complaint (and the details trickling out) exposes Meta's history of lax protections and questionable data collection. Will a fine be enough to push the company to prioritize user safety over profits?

🧪 Copper breakthrough could slash drug costs

The Rundown: UCLA chemists just discovered a way to produce amines — a key component of many drugs by using cheap and abundant copper instead of precious metals, enabling more affordable versions of critical medicines.

The details:

  • Many vital drugs contain chemicals called amines — whose production requires expensive metals.

  • The new method snips and reforms molecules with low-cost copper and oxygen in fewer steps to generate amines.

  • The technique was used to make cancer and gene-regulating drugs for just dollars per gram instead of thousands.

The relevance: At a time when drug prices are still astronomically high, this new method could make life-saving medications more accessible to the masses. The question is — will big pharma companies actually lower prices or just pocket the profits?

OpenAI's secret discovery before firing Sam Altman

Rowan Cheung • 4 minutes

Welcome, AI enthusiasts.

The mystery of what led the OpenAI board to fire Sam Altman might’ve just been solved.

A leak from top OpenAI researchers states they made a powerful AI discovery that could "threaten humanity" right before the ousting. Let’s get into it...

In today’s AI rundown:

  • OpenAI’s recent discovery before firing Sam Altman

  • xAI plans to launch Grok next week to rival ChatGPT

  • 9 new AI tools to try

  • The 5 most popular GPTs of the week

OPENAI

😱 OpenAI’s recent discovery before firing Sam Altman

Image source: Jessica Chou via WIRED

The Rundown: According to a report by Reuters, OpenAI had a secret breakthrough called Q* (pronounced Q-Star) that precipitated the firing of Sam Altman.

The details:

  • Before Sam's firing, researchers sent the board a letter warning of a new AI discovery that could "threaten humanity."

  • The new model dubbed Q* demonstrated internal capabilities of doing simple math (something no model has achieved).

  • While simple math might not seem impressive to most, it could be a huge step toward creating artificial general intelligence (AGI).

  • A day before Sam was fired, he gave a chilling speech, quoting: "Is this a tool we've built or a creature we have built?"

Why it matters: While Q* is not fully confirmed yet, if true, the entire firing of Sam Altman could have been AGI-related all along, and the board’s drastic (and unexplained) actions would make more sense.

xAI

👽 xAI plans to launch Grok next week to rival ChatGPT

The Rundown: Elon Musk’s new company, xAI, is reportedly launching Grok, its ChatGPT competitor next week to X Premium+ subscribers.

The details:

  • Grok will be integrated directly into X (formerly Twitter) and will have its own unique tab within the platform.

  • Grok’s differentiation over ChatGPT is its unique features like a distinctive personality and real-time X knowledge access.

  • Grok is part of a new, higher-priced X Premium+ subscription, priced at $16/month (above the standard $8/month).

  • Users will be able to submit feedback on how Grok answered, including writing optimal answers in response, to train the AI over time.

Our thoughts: While X is known to be the top platform for real-time news, it’s also known for massive misinformation. Given this fact, it will be interesting to see how the team at xAI handles what to feed into the AI vs. not.

Image source: Greg Brockman on X (Formerly Twitter)

The Rundown: After a late-night confirmation on Tuesday of the return of Sam Altman to OpenAI, new info is emerging about the future of the board, negotiation details, potential causes of the initial firing, and more.

If you’re new to the saga, get a rundown from our 3-minute brief on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (we’ll compile the entire story together soon).

The details:

  • New board chair Bret Taylor and (now former) interim CEO Emmett Shear played pivotal roles in the negotiations.

  • Emmett Shear didn't want to stay CEO since the board didn't provide evidence, so instead negotiated with both sides to get Sam back.

  • One of the key concessions included Altman agreeing not to join the board initially — though he is expected to join in the future.

  • Both sides also agreed to an investigation around the firing.

  • A sale of employee OpenAI shares to investors at $86B valuation is now said to be back on track.

The relevance: While the company’s future looked murky for a stretch — the return of Altman, Brockman, and a re-energized staff shows OpenAI is BACK and ready to push forward towards their mission of achieving AGI.

Stay tuned as we learn more about the new board, the investigations, and the real reason why the OpenAI board fired Sam Altman in the first place…

🚀 Inflection AI releases massive new LLM

The Rundown: AI startup Inflection AI just announced Inflection-2, a HUGE new 175 billion parameter language model — and claims its capabilities exceed Google and Meta's top models and “is very close” to catching GPT-4.

The details:

  • Inflection-2 outscored LLaMA 2 and PaLM 2 on various NLP benchmarks and approached near GPT-4 levels on certain tasks.

  • The model was trained on 5,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs over a few weeks.

  • CEO Mustafa Suleyman stated the model will soon be integrated into their Pi chatbot, pending some final tweaks.

  • Suleyman also predicts the company’s next model will be 10x larger within six months, with another 10x six months after that.

Our thoughts: Despite OpenAI’s recent dominance, this Inflection release shows the quality battle still remains fierce. If Suleyman’s scaling projections come true, AI capabilities a year from now could be mind-blowing.

OPENAI

🚨 Sam Altman RETURNS as CEO of OpenAI

The Rundown: The OpenAI saga has seemingly come to an end with a crazy timeline yesterday and the eventual return of Sam Altman as CEO late last night.

If you’re new, get a rundown from our brief on Monday & Tuesday.

Yesterday’s timeline:

  • First, Emmett Shear reportedly said he would quit if the board couldn’t communicate why Altman was fired.

  • Throughout the drama, the team at OpenAI still launched a new feature, enabling ChatGPT with voice to all free users.

  • However, after the announcement, a widespread ChatGPT outage occurred, with some users reporting a mysterious “ChatGPT Alpha.”

  • Another report surfaced that Helen Toner (one of six board members) might have been the reason for the firing.

  • Late last night, OpenAI announced the return of Sam Altman and a new initial board of directors that will eventually expand to 9 people.

The relevance: The events that transpired this week will be written in AI history forever (and probably aired on Netflix next year!). If there’s one takeaway, it’s that the OpenAI team is one helluva group, and we can expect them to come back stronger than ever (case in point).

However, one question remains: Will the initial decision of the firing ever be made public? What did Ilya see?

TODAY’S HEADLINES

CRYPTOCURRENCY

🚔 Crypto giant Binance charged, agrees to $4.3B settlement

The Rundown: The U.S. Department of Justice just charged Binance and CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) with criminal offenses related to money laundering.

The details:

  • The DOJ alleged Binance policies allowed criminals to launder funds and that CZ "pretended to comply" with laws.

  • Binance will pay over $4.3B in penalties to U.S. agencies.

  • Zhao also pled guilty to one felony charge of failing to maintain an effective Anti-Money Laundering program.

  • CZ stepped down as CEO of the crypto giant, with global head of regional markets Richard Tend appointed to succeed him.

The relevance: This outcome seemed inevitable given the long investigations into Binance — and the eye-watering penalties show regulators aren’t messing around when it comes to crypto compliance. However, the resolution is also a positive step towards more legitimization of the industry.

  • An accompanying app gamifies workouts, competitions, training guidance, and measures progress.

  • The product caters to a niche audience that lacks accessible at-home fitness options, and comes in at a $2,595 price point.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

OPENAI

🍿 The OpenAI saga continues

The Rundown: The OpenAI saga continued on Monday, with chief scientist Ilya Sutskever flipping his support, a potential return for Sam Altman, employees signing a letter calling on the board to resign, and CEO drama.

If you’re just getting started with this real-life soap opera, check out yesterday’s newsletter to get up to speed.

Today’s updates:

  • Sutskever, who initially appeared to be one of the main drivers in Altman’s firing, flipped his support — signing the employee letter and tweeting that he ‘deeply regretted his participation.’

  • Despite the initial tweet from Nadella, Sam Altman joining Microsoft is not a done deal — and that he is still trying to return to OpenAI.

  • Over 745 of 770 OpenAI employees have signed a letter to the board, threatening to join Microsoft unless board members resign.

  • Interim CEO Emmett Shear posted a 30-day plan for the company.

  • In a report from The Information, it appears Emmett Shear was not the first pick as CEO.

  • Alexandr Wang (CEO of Scale AI) and Nat Friedman (Former CEO of GitHub) both declined the offer before Emmett.

  • Lastly, the OpenAI board approached Anthropic (OpenAI’s top competitor) for a potential MERGER but was declined.

Our thoughts: This saga looks far from over — with plenty of maneuvering still happening behind the scenes. Will Altman return to OpenAI or recreate the company under a new Microsoft branch? Did power drive the move by the board, or did some new advancement scare them?

More to come as the story unfolds…
