OPENAI

🎂 Altman officially reinstated as ChatGPT turns 1

The Rundown: OpenAI just published a letter announcing that Sam Altman is officially back as CEO of OpenAI alongside a new board and leadership team — coinciding with the one-year anniversary of ChatGPT’s launch.

The details:

  • Mira Murati returns as CTO, with Greg Brockman coming back as President.

  • The initial board consists of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo, with Microsoft adding a non-voting ‘observer seat’.

  • Noticeably absent from the board is Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever — with Altman saying they are ‘discussing how he can continue his work.’

  • Helen Toner and Tasha McCauley also vacated their board seats, with Toner tweeting that the board’s actions were ‘not motivated by a desire to slow down OpenAI’s work’.

  • Altman also seemed to confirm the Q* rumors in some capacity, calling it an '“unfortunate leak” in an interview with The Verge.

The relevance: While Altman, Brockman, and co. return to their positions without losing a single employee, questions still remain surrounding the board’s reasoning for the initial coup. Will we ever learn what Ilya saw?

Elon told advertisers to WHAT?

Rowan Cheung • 4 minutes

Welcome, Tech enthusiasts.

Between a profanity-laced attack on (former) X advertisers to the insanely-hyped Cybertruck event, Elon Musk is having quite the week.

Love him or hate him, the eccentric billionaire knows how to keep us all on the edge of our seats. Let’s dive in…

In today’s tech rundown:

  • Elon to X advertiser boycott: GO F**K YOURSELF

  • Tesla's long-awaited Cybertruck arrives

  • 10 new products

  • Meta removed a China-based network

  • The LAPD acquired WebLoc

  • Uber plans to include London's iconic black cabs

TODAY’S HEADLINES

TWITTER / X

🖕 Elon to X advertiser boycott: GO F**K YOURSELF

The Rundown: Elon Musk had harsh words for advertisers exiting Twitter, accusing them of "trying to blackmail the company" during a polarizing interview at the New York Times.

The details:

  • Musk said companies halting ads should "go f**k themselves" in profanity-laced remarks at a NYT conference.

  • Major advertisers like Disney, IBM, Comcast, and Sony have pulled their ads from X after Musk’s tweet endorsing an antisemitic post.

  • Elon called the tweet one of the "most foolish" he’s ever made.

  • Musk also said the companies removing ads from the platform were trying to ‘blackmail’ X and drive it to bankruptcy.

Why it matters: Elon’s angry quips overshadow the other thought-provoking commentary during the intense Q&A — and put the eccentric billionaire even more at odds with remaining major brand advertisers on X.

Watch the full interview here.

TESLA

🛻 Tesla's long-awaited Cybertruck arrives

The Rundown: After years of hype and delays, Tesla just delivered the first electric Cybertrucks to reservation holders at its Austin factory — also releasing pricing and specs for two additional models.

The details:

  • The Base RWD model starts at $61K (nearly $20K above the original target) — with its 250-mile range also coming in lower than expected.

  • The AWD and Cyberbeast models will reportedly be available next year, with estimated price tags of $80K and $100K.

  • Tesla aims for 250K trucks per year by 2025, with rapid scaling a struggle due to the truck’s complexity and unorthodox design.

  • Musk’s demo included the premium Cybertruck beating a Porsche 911 in a race — WHILE towing another Porsche at the same time.

The relevance: After a long wait, the Cybertruck finally makes it into the hands of (at least some) customers — though a full scale rollout seems to still be years away. But Musk remains a master of generating hype — and his latest eye-popping demos will have fans salivating for their turn in line.

STABILITY AI

🚨 Stability AI explores sale amid executive turmoil

The Rundown: Stability AI, one of the world’s leading open-source AI companies, is reportedly exploring a sale following a letter from investors urging the CEO to resign over financial instability and management issues.

The details:

  • Coatue, Stability AI’s biggest investor, called for CEO Emad Mostaque to step down a year after leading Stability AI's $101M funding round.

  • According to Bloomberg, Stability has held acquisition talks with Cohere and Jasper but claims it is not actively trying to sell.

  • The news comes amid cultural issues that spurred executive departures as the company rapidly expanded staff for new releases.

Our thoughts: Despite the name, Stability AI seems a bit… Unstable? While it hasn’t seemed to impact shipping new models (see yesterday’s news), a sale and the potential drama could have major implications for the open-source champion of the AI space.

REDDIT

👀 Reddit debuts new look amid IPO chatter

The Rundown: Reddit just introduced its first major rebrand in years — including a slick new Snoo mascot — as the social media giant reportedly weighs going public in early 2024.

The details:

  • Snoo, the iconic alien mascot that originated from a college sketch by co-founder Alexis Ohanian, receives a new modern 3D makeover.

  • New fonts and colors aim to represent Reddit's identity as an eclectic hub for chatter.

  • The timing of the rebrand fuels speculation of a long-rumored IPO, as per Bloomberg.

Why it matters: A public listing would be a milestone in Reddit's wild 17-year journey — but can the ‘front page of the internet’ maintain its quirky, counter-culture essence post-IPO?

GOOGLE

🌋 Google taps new geothermal energy technique

The Rundown: Google just went operational on its first-of-its-kind geothermal plant in Nevada — seeking to prove a new advanced drilling method to access previously inaccessible heat energy deep underground.

The details:

  • The method builds on methods from oil/gas industry to unlock geothermal potential previously blocked by geology.

  • The plant delivers constant, weather-independent electricity while radically reducing drilling risk and land use versus wind and solar.

  • Google partnered with clean-energy startup Fervo on the plant, who also just broke ground on a larger-scale version in Utah.

  • The tech giant has set a goal to operate its data centers and campuses on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

The relevance: Google is breaking the boundaries of energy harvesting — with the noble goal of unlocking clean power sources and transforming the sector.

The Rundown: Researchers in Switzerland just developed an autonomous excavator that can build walls with multi-ton boulders, with extreme precision and speed.

The details:

  • The excavator uses LiDAR and computer vision to scan terrain, identify stones, and plan placement.

  • The digger can grab and position stones within 1cm of accuracy based on an algorithm and automated plans.

  • The precision allows the excavator to use local stones/rubble instead of new material for a more sustainable building.

Our thoughts: With a shortage of construction workers and often dangerous conditions, automating more of the process (in a faster, more sustainable way) seems like a big step forward if the tech can scale past prototype stages.

The Rundown: American officials are privately investigating the UAE over links between its major AI firm G42 and Chinese companies, warning of data and tech transfer risks, according to a new report from the NYT.

The details:

  • G42 announced a partnership with OpenAI last month and also boasts agreements with Microsoft and Dell.

  • The CIA flagged G42 partnerships with firms like Huawei that could act as a pipeline to providing advanced US tech to China's military.

  • CEO Peng Xiao formerly oversaw operations of ToTok, an Emirati app identified by US agencies as a spying tool aided by China.

Why it matters: With AI capabilities set to shift the future global order, the advantage of gaining access to cutting-edge techniques or breakthroughs may push espionage and national security risks to new heights. This story is one to monitor as the US/China AI race continues to escalate.

🌎 Nations unite on AI safety principles

The Rundown: The U.S. and 17 other countries just signed an agreement promoting major AI systems to be "secure by design" against hacking and misuse.

The details:

  • The agreement is the first coordinated international effort outlining safety-first AI development principles.

  • The non-binding deal urges vetting suppliers, testing models before release to prevent hijacking and other general recommendations.

  • Despite the framework, the recommendations do not tackle pressing issues like data/training for m

odels or appropriate uses of AI.

The relevance: This agreement marks an unprecedented level of international coordination on AI safety issues and another effort by the U.S. to catch up to Europe on regulating the tech.

AI TRAINING

🤣 Animate your memes with AI video tools

If you’re on X (formerly Twitter), you’ve probably seen the viral animated memes all over your timeline. Wondering how to make one of your own?’

Follow the steps below to bring your favorite memes to life:

Step 1: Find your meme: For this example, we'll use the famous Drake ‘Hotline Bling’ image with some text added using IMGflip.

Step 2: Upload to Stable Video: Drop your meme into Stable Video Diffusion (available via Replicate or HuggingFace demo). Below the input, you can edit preferences like video length, motion speed, sizing, etc. Click ‘Run’, and the animation generation will begin.

Note: Other video tools like RunwayML (motion brush) and Pika Labs will also work.

Step 3: If you’re happy with the output, click the three dots → download or the ‘Download’ button below the generation to save.

Tweak the preferences as needed (decreasing the ‘motion bucket id’ worked wonders for the example below). Happy creating!

🔎 Google upgrades search tools to fight AI spam

The Rundown: Google just introduced new tools helping discussion forums and social platforms better surface their content in search results — continuing the company’s push to showcase more first-hand perspectives.

The details:

  • The tools aim to address the rise of SEO-optimized junk crowding out authentic opinions and conversations.

  • New markups let sites signal to Google how user-generated content is structured for accurate indexing.

  • The move is part of Google's response as complaints grow about search losing usefulness amid AI content explosions.

Why it matters: The internet has an AI-generated spam problem — and it will only get worse. Google Search is going to need a serious overhaul to fight to elevate quality content against the flood of generated junk in the new AI-era.
