The Rundown: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sent the AI community into a frenzy yesterday after posting a (since edited) comment on Reddit that ‘AGI has been achieved internally).

Details:

• The comment marked the first post from Altman’s account in seven years — which he quickly edited to dispel the spreading AGI news.

• The original post from the /Singularity subreddit highlighted an account, “Johnny Apples” being deactivated — an anonymous source of past AI-related leaks.

• The comment comes after several rumors surrounding OpenAI’s powerful internal models and potential AGI achievement.

Our thoughts: It feels like everyone is collectively holding their breath, waiting for AGI to become a reality — and in light of the smoke coming from those rumors, it’s an odd time to light a fake fire.

Only a couple hours after this drama — news broke out of OpenAI seeking to raise funds at up to a whopping $90 Billion valuation. Coincidence?

🕵️ CIA builds proprietary AI system for intel

The Rundown: The CIA is reportedly creating its own AI tool in rivalry with China to help sift through the avalanche of publicly available data for intelligence clues.

Key points:

• The system will be provided to all 18 US intelligence agencies to aid in open-source intelligence gathering.

• It allows tracing information back to original sources.

• The CIA says a chatbot could be the logical next step for distributing intel quicker.

• The US maintains efforts to assert AI dominance, particularly against China's goal to be the global leader by 2030.

Why it matters: AI holds immense potential for intel, especially considering the endless amount of documents and data in the field. But its national security use warrants continual scrutiny — which is not likely to happen with a closed-door operation like the CIA.
