The Rundown In this guide you will learn how to use the new Gemini features in Gmail, what is available right now, and the most beneficial and disappointing parts about this initial rollout. Who This Is Useful For Gmail users with lots of emails Anyone who wants to ask their inbox questions Google workspace or AI pro users What You Need to Get Started A Google workspace plan (work email) OR A personal Google account with “Google AI Pro” membership ($20) Step 1 Go to gmail.com and click on settings in the top right. Make sure all the "smart features" are enabled. Step 2 Talk to Your Inbox Back in your inbox click the “Ask Gemini” button to the right of the settings gear. You can ask it anything about your inbox like: “What hotel did I stay at in [city] last summer?” “What emails do I have about [subject]?” You can use the @ symbol to mention specific Google drive files to Gemini but it is read only. Step 3 Natural Language Search The demo Google put out shows that if you ask a question in the inbox search bar, it will pull relevant emails and give you an AI summary. Google says this was rolled out to Google AI Pro users but we haven’t noticed it implemented yet. If you’re thinking about upgrading to AI Pro it might make sense to wait for full implementation of Gemini in Gmail. Step 4 Help Me Write In any draft email you can press Option + H (Mac) or Alt + H (Windows) or simply click the "Help me write" text. Then you can write a prompt and Gemini will help you write a reply based on the context of the email thread. After a reply is written you can click “Recreate” to regenerate it or click “Refine” to change the tone or length of the reply. We found this feature to be super fast and accurate. Going Further You might not have noticed the “help me schedule” button in your draft pane. Gemini will read the email thread for context, check your calendar, then suggest meeting times.
