AI IN THE MILITARY
🏛️ Pentagon plots vast AI-powered military network

The Rundown: According to the Wall Street Journal, The Pentagon is planning to fast-track the development of an artificial intelligence military network to stay ahead of challenges from China and other global adversaries.
The details:
The US plans to spend hundreds of millions to develop an extensive network of AI-powered technology, drones, and autonomous systems that are "small, smart, cheap."
The military wants air, land, and sea capabilities to provide surveillance and logistics — and the spending is part of the $1.8B AI budget request and "Replicator" initiative unveiled last week.
With adversaries like China increasing investment in autonomous systems, the Defense Department wants to counteract with space-based autonomous systems, ground-based logistics, and missile defense systems.
Why it matters: Integrating AI into every facet of the military is an expected (but scary) inevitability. As we delve further down the AI-driven warfare path, striking the right balance between expeditious development and thorough auditing is critical — and the global stakes have never been higher.

The Rundown: Hearing aid makers are reportedly leveraging AI to create smart devices that make hearing aids more valuable and appealing, especially for younger users.
The details:
AI powers features such as speech clarity, fall alerts, and translation and can act as a personal assistant with music and phone capabilities.
The tech aims to reduce stigma and get people help sooner — particularly for the younger generation, with reportedly 1 in 7 teenagers suffering from hearing loss.
The AI hearing aids are seen as giving users “superpowers” beyond just hearing help and can automatically adapt to environments and situations.
Our thoughts: The introduction of AI into hearing aids could be a game-changer, reducing the stigma and extending their use to a younger market. Transforming hearing aids from a healthcare tool to a versatile piece of AI tech can add significant appeal and user-friendliness.

AMAZON
✋ Amazon’s AI turns your palm into a magic wand

The Rundown: Amazon One has trained a neural network using millions of artificial palms to create a contactless, convenient payment and identity verification system that reportedly outpaces the accuracy of iris scanning (watch demo video).
Key points:
Utilizing unique lines, grooves, veins, and ridges on the palm, Amazon One connects a unique palm signature to your credit card or Amazon account.
The tech is rolling out to 500 Whole Foods Market stores and other third-party locations and strives to eliminate the need for wallets or phones.
The system was trained using a “palm factory” of millions of synthetic hand images — and has 99.99% accuracy on over 3M uses.
Use cases include contactless and convenient payment, age verification, entering a venue, and tracking loyalty rewards.
Why it matters: Amazon One's use of generative AI is an intriguing reinvention of convenience — with an opportunity to revolutionize everyday transactions and experiences and unlock the potential of biometric data.

SOCIAL MEDIA
🍑 Explicit AI ads take over social media
The Rundown: Explicit ads for AI-powered virtual girlfriends and chatbots are currently flooding Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook despite bans on explicit content.
Key points:
App developers are circumventing social media ad restrictions to promote explicit AI chatbots, with racy ads surging across major social media platforms.
The ads running are widely seen as a double standard, with human workers banned from advertising their services in the industry.
Despite increased scrutiny, Meta and TikTok are struggling to control the spread of these explicit AI ads as they surge in growth and the tech rises in popularity.
Noteworthy: It’s no surprise to see AI taken down this route (this is the internet, after all) — but these ads do raise some ethical issues around both regulation and who is being targeted by the content.

TODAY’S HEADLINES
META
🤝 Meta and LG collab rumored on new VR headsets

The Rundown: A Korean news report indicates Meta and LG could join forces for a new high-end Quest Pro virtual reality headset, which may compete with Apple's Vision Pro and reportedly cost about $2,000.
Details:
The LG partnership rumor follows news that Meta is also set to release a cheaper Quest headset priced under $200 in 2024.
The speculated pricing marks a significant hike from the original Quest Pro's launch price of $1,499, later reduced to $999.
Meta has a history of collaborative ventures in VR headset production, including Lenovo-branded Oculus Rift S and Xiaomi-manufactured Oculus Go.
Our take: Meta's potential LG collaboration could see the tech giant continue to bring high-end VR to the consumer market while also maintaining affordable alternatives.
But, with reports of a $2,000 price tag, the question remains — will this next Quest Pro sequel make enough of a splash to justify its hefty cost?
SAMSUNG
🏠 Samsung's genAI Bixby to redefine smart homes

The Rundown: Samsung just revealed plans to level up its voice assistant, Bixby, with powerful generative AI aimed at creating personalized environments in smart homes.
The details:
The AI upgrade will equip Bixby to understand multifaceted sentences and have more natural interactions, a feature intended for all future Samsung smart home appliances.
The company hopes to leverage AI to augment all Samsung devices to better adapt to and recognize customers’ lifestyles and patterns.
Samsung is also introducing Tizen RT, a down-sized version of its Tizen OS uniquely designed for smart home products — with more updates expected in October at the Samsung Developer Conference.
Why it matters: Samsung's play to infuse Bixby with generative AI could change the game for smart home tech — moving from mere connectivity to tailoring experiences based on user habits. While the term ‘smart home’ has been around for a while, we might finally see some innovations worthy of the title.
HUAWEI
📱 Huawei's mystery Mate phone matches Apple's speed

The Rundown: Huawei's newly released Mate 60 Pro smartphone is reportedly demonstrating wireless speed equivalent to Apple's latest models, signaling its 5G capability.
Key points:
Testing has shown that the Mate 60 Pro exhibits similar bandwidth to other 5G phones — resulting in considerable attention from Chinese investors and the tech industry.
The model reportedly represents China's successful workaround of US trade sanctions, intensifying patriotic sentiment in the country’s tech sector.
Mate 60 Pro displayed speed beyond 350Mbps in testing on China Mobile's network; however, the particular chips used in the phone for wireless connectivity remain undisclosed.
Why it matters: The Mate 60 Pro represents a breakthrough for Huawei's in-house chip ambitions amid U.S. restrictions. But its capabilities may come at the cost of efficiency and higher pricing amid sanctions.

X (FORMERLY TWITTER)
🐦 X to tap user data for AI model training

The Rundown: X (formerly Twitter) updated its privacy policy to allow the use of collected user data and public info to help train its machine learning and AI models.
Key points:
The change was spotted last week in section 2.1 of the policy by eagle-eyed researchers, with the data likely assisting in training models for Elon Musk’s new xAI startup.
The move comes alongside a new collection of biometric data from users, including employment and education histories.
Musk confirmed via a tweet that "just public data, no DMs or anything private" will be used for training.
Noteworthy: While it’s no surprise to see X tapping into X’s data goldmine for AI gains, leveraging user info is sure to cause some ethical unease — and could fuel even more anti-AI sentiment with added privacy concerns.

AI IN SCIENCE
👃 AI rivals humans at predicting smells

The Rundown: Researchers have created an AI model that can predict how a chemical will smell just from its molecular structure, matching human testers.
Key points:
A neural network successfully inferred the scents of 400 mystery chemicals, also generating odor profiles for 500,000 hypothetical molecules.
Perceived smells reportedly vary greatly — but the model learned to link atomic features to smells from training data, and got closer to ‘human averages’ than any participant in the group.
The findings could speed searches for better-smelling consumer products — though the researchers note the next frontier needed for study is discerning ‘mixtures of molecules’ found in the real world.
Why it matters: In a wave of new tech advances, smell seems like one area flying under the radar — until now. From the looks of this study, AI could be sniffing its way to new innovations in the near future.

🚫 U.S. expands restrictions on AI chip sales

The Rundown: The US has expanded restrictions on exporting Nvidia's sophisticated AI chips beyond China to now include certain Middle East countries.
Key points:
New licensing rules were imposed on top AI chips like A100 and H100, with both Nvidia and rival AMD receiving notice on Thursday.
The Middle East curbs will have "no material impact" for AMD and "don't affect a meaningful portion" of Nvidia's revenue, reps said.
While the exact countries weren’t revealed, the Middle East joins both China and Russia on the list of regions facing restrictions — and comes amid high tensions around Taiwan chip manufacturing.
Our thoughts: This move shows the U.S. government is still keen on controlling both where AI chips can go — and where they can't. It's also another reminder that China isn't the only country facing American restrictions on tech.

🚨 New survey shows growing AI concerns

The Rundown: More Americans are worried versus excited about AI’s growing role in daily life, according to a new survey from Pew Research.
Key points:
52% now say they're more concerned than excited about increased AI use, up 14 points since December. Only 10% of respondents were more excited than concerned.
Rising awareness of AI correlates with growing unease - with 90% responding that they have heard at least ‘a little’ about the technology.
Views of AI's impact in specific areas are mixed, with many still unsure of its effects.
The survey saw overwhelming negative sentiment toward AI’s role in privacy and personal information.
Why it matters: The results underscore the quiet divide between public sentiment of AI versus avid followers (like many of those reading this newsletter) who might have a more positive view. As the tech continues to reach for mass adoption, educating the general public will be crucial.

TODAY’S HEADLINES
X (FORMERLY TWITTER)
💸 X gets approval for crypto license

The Rundown: Regulators in Rhode Island granted X (formerly Twitter) a license required to custody and transfer crypto, moving it closer to supporting digital asset payments across the nation.
The details:
The license approval lets X hold, send, and exchange digital currencies on users' behalf.
This comes after X obtained similar licenses in other U.S. states over the past months, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, and New Hampshire.
The financial turn aligns with Elon Musk's vision for X as an "everything app" with crypto functionality.
Why it matters: This license clears regulatory hurdles in yet another state for X to eventually support crypto payments and trading across the U.S. However, the scope of its initial offering still remains uncertain — especially given the country’s currently unfavorable stance on the crypto industry.
APPLE
🍎 Apple's iPhone 15 event set for Sept. 12

The Rundown: Apple announced its next product launch happening on Sept. 12, where the world will get its first look at the hotly-anticipated iPhone 15 lineup.
Key points:
The event features the tagline ‘Wanderlust’, and four new iPhone 15 models are expected to be unveiled — Standard, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max.
The Pro models are expected to receive more significant changes like A17 chip, titanium frame, and thinner bezels.
All phones are reportedly switching to USB-C, with higher starting prices (rumored to be $1099 and $1199) for the Pro and Pro Max models.
Noteworthy: With its Lightning era ending, the iPhone 15 launch represents a major shift for Apple. But the Pro models' rumored $1100+ prices could limit appeal despite redesigns seeming poised to push iPhone innovation further.
📱 Google accidentally leaks Pixel 8 Pro design

Image source: Google (first spotted by X user @Android_Setting)
The Rundown: Google leaked its own shot of the upcoming Pixel 8 Pro phone, showing off a tweaked camera bump and new beige colorway in a since-removed photo on the Google Store website.
Details:
The image appeared briefly on a Google support page before being removed — but not before being spotted by savvy users on X.
The photo shows an elongated oval camera housing with a "Porcelain" color option and matches previous Pixel 8 leaks pointing to camera and display upgrades.
A Pixel Watch also appeared in the image, possibly hinting at a next-gen model.
Our thoughts: Another release, another leak for Google. While the image confirms Pixel 8 rumors and demonstrates its continued focus on unique colors, battery life fixes may be more critical after Pixel 7's issues.

OPENAI
💰OpenAI raking in cash as ChatGPT gets down to business

The Rundown: OpenAI is reportedly on pace to hit $1B in annual revenue as more companies adopt ChatGPT, a huge leap fueled by enterprise demand.
Details:
The company is currently earning around $80M in monthly revenue, according to The Information.
OpenAI lost a reported $540M last year developing its costly AI models, with the current revenue push coming amid copious spending needs.
The team launched ChatGPT Enterprise this week, targeting businesses with a tailored model alongside the current premium consumer subscriptions.
Why it matters: After early losses on pricey models dominated headlines, OpenAI's sudden cash explosion should help silence critics. Plus, with Enterprise unlocking more money from big businesses, the revenue surge might just be warming up.

INTERNATIONAL AI
🇨🇳 China set to greenlight first AI models

The Rundown: China is reportedly set to approve its first public generative AI services this week, allowing the country’s own tech giants to take on the leading US-based models.
Key points:
The approval comes just weeks after China implemented its first AI regulations and signals Beijing’s endorsement of the industry it deemed both a “political and business imperative”.
The country’s top tech leaders, Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent, are racing to roll out rival services, with Baidu’s Ernie Bot expected to be the first to win government approval.
U.S. sanctions on semiconductor exports could play a role in Western models staying ahead, though Baidu claimed in June that Ernie was already outperforming ChatGPT in several areas.
Why it matters: With all AI ambitions unlocked, a new tech powerhouse emerges as the AI frenzy continues to spread across the globe. But it remains to be seen if China’s models will threaten current leaders in the short term.

✍️ Generate AI images with text using Ideogram
Since the launch of AI-generating image platforms, all models have notoriously struggled to imagine text properly in the results.
But a new platform called Ideogram (which opened in beta this week) seems to have made some serious progress in cracking the text-generating code. How to get started:
Head to Ideogram.ai and create an account (it’s free to try).
Type a prompt of the image you’d like to create, similar to how you would in Midjourney or another tool.
Ideogram also has a list of suggested styles (photo, cinematic, painting), as well as a sizing feature.
For this example, our prompt was: “A cartoon image of a happy robot holding a sign that says ‘The Rundown’”
Continue tweaking your prompt and the styles as needed until you get the result you like!
