🍺 Is genetically modified yeast the future of beer?

The Rundown: Startups are genetically engineering yeast strains to produce tailored flavors, aromas, and other traits in beer — despite the controversial nature of using GMOs.
The details:
Companies edit specific yeast genes linked to compounds that affect beer taste and quality using CRISPR gene editing.
This allows the rapid introduction of new fruit flavors without ingredient supply variability or artificial additives.
US craft brewers are rapidly adopting GM yeasts, but global regulations blocking GMOs prevent most overseas sales.
Brewers believe GM yeast will eventually lead to brewers precisely controlling aspects like freshness, taste, consistency, etc.
The relevance: GM yeast's promise of the perfect pint that stays fresh forever is alluring — but the sentiment is tough to change as past GMO missteps still loom large for many consumers.

🪳 Robot speaks language of pests to protect crops

The Rundown: Researchers just programmed a robot to mimic insect vibrational communication to lure pests away from crops, providing targeted pest control without harmful pesticides or toxins.
The details:
The ‘Pied Piper’ device identifies pest mating calls — then generates disruptive vibrations to confuse them and prevent breeding.
It uses a laser vibrometer to record and analyze the unique frequency patterns of each species' vibrational signals.
In trials, the robot successfully detected the treehopper pest in vineyards by responding with fake mating calls that attracted them.
The adaptive system could learn any crop pest's language, allowing customizable control without harming beneficial species.
Why it matters: Moving away from pesticides is a major win for agriculture and the environment — with robotics and AI helping to pave the way. Who knew that sound could act as an effective birth control for pests?

🇺🇸 Biden issues sweeping order on AI safety

The Rundown: President Biden just issued the US government's first regulations on AI systems, including testing requirements for advanced models and anti-discrimination measures.
The details:
Developers of higher-risk AI must share the results of safety testing and risk assessments with the government before public release.
It directs federal agencies to create standards for responsible AI development, including labeling AI-generated content.
Seeks anti-discrimination measures in areas like housing and benefits programs potentially using biased algorithms.
Critics argue it lacks strong enforcement mechanisms while expanding federal oversight of private sector AI — and fails to address immediate disinformation threats.
Our thoughts: It’s a tricky balance to strike between enforcement and stifling innovation. However, the lack of enforceability in the order has been raising many public questions on how impactful the legislation will actually be.

🎃 Craft a spooky Halloween costume with ChatGPT
Sick of buying generic, expensive Halloween costumes every year? Let AI help you create a one-of-a-kind look from everyday household items.
Step 1: Choose a costume idea! If you have a specific outfit you’d like to replicate, upload a photo of it (for the example below, we took the Scarecrow costume). If you aren’t sure, just ask ChatGPT for suggestions!
Step 2: Upload and prompt. Provide ChatGPT with the costume image or the final concept — then try this prompt: “Help me create this costume using DIY materials and items at home. Be descriptive and creative.”
With some clever prompting, ChatGPT provides customized costume ideas to create a look that’s uniquely you.

TODAY’S HEADLINES
APPLE
🤖 Apple’s ‘scary fast’ event unveils next-gen tech
The Rundown: Apple always likes to tease with their event invites. The logo this time was shadowy and morphed into a somewhat creepy Mac Finder icon, signaling a Mac-centered reveal.
Here’s what they revealed:
High-End MacBook Pro: Apple’s latest MacBook Pro is now available in a "space black" finish and can be customized up to 128GB of RAM.
M3 Chips: Geared towards gamers and professionals alike, these chips offer massive GPU upgrades.
End of the Touch Bar: The M3 MacBook Pro spells the end for the Touch Bar, moving back to physical keys.
Faster iMacs: While the design remains unchanged, the new M3 iMac promises to be two times faster than its M1 predecessor.
Why it matters: The entire event was impressively shot on iPhone 15 Pro Max, demonstrating the device's capabilities. Stay tuned for in-depth reviews and hands-on experiences as journalists get their hands on these new offerings.

ROBOTICS
🐕🦺 A robotic guide dog for the blind

The Rundown: Engineers at Binghamton University just programmed a quadruped robot dog to guide visually impaired people via leash tugs — a concept that could help increase accessibility to public areas for the blind.
The details:
The robot integrates computer vision and motion planning to navigate routes, avoid obstacles, and respond to leash pulls.
It was trained in just 10 hours via reinforcement learning to interpret various tug directions and intensities.
Future development involves adding voice commands and "intelligent disobedience" to disregard unsafe commands.
With stored maps, the team believes it could be deployed in challenging public spaces like malls and airports.
Our thoughts: Between this, Boston Dynamics’ tour guide bot, and parkour robodogs — man’s best (robotic) friend seems to be having a moment! But these guide dogs do feel like an excellent use case (no offense to real dogs).

Welcome, AI enthusiasts.
ChatGPT just got a major upgrade — converging all features into one smooth experience, alongside PDF capabilities and a mysterious ‘Magic Create.’
With the Dev Day Conference (Nov. 6) around the corner, what else does OpenAI have up their sleeves? Let’s dig in…
In today’s AI rundown:
ChatGPT gets all tools in one place with upgrade

OPENAI
🦾 ChatGPT gets all tools in one place with upgrade

The Rundown: OpenAI began rolling out a new version of ChatGPT that combines all GPT-4 capabilities — Browsing, DALL-E 3, and Data Analysis — without needing to switch between modes.
The details:
The update gives access to all ChatGPT features within the main interface — without toggling through multiple modes.
Users can now upload PDFs and documents with the ability to ‘chat’ or analyze them similarly to Claude and other GPT wrappers.
The release comes ahead of next week’s highly anticipated OpenAI Dev Day, which is expected to have additional major announcements.
The new rollout doesn’t (yet) include plugins — and also found in the code are references to a mysterious "GPT-4 Magic Create”.
The update is slowly getting rolled out to ChatGPT premium users — if you don’t have it yet, just keep spamming refresh.
Our thoughts: Having all the tools available in one spot is a major unlock — opening a world of new possibilities. The update feels like a serious step forward towards the all-in-one AI assistants we’re all anticipating.

💰 Google bets $2B on OpenAI competitor Anthropic

The Rundown: Google just invested up to a whopping $2 billion more in Anthropic, whose LLM Claude has emerged as a serious competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The details:
This adds to Google's previous $550M investment made earlier this year, bringing its total to $2.55B.
The move follows Amazon's recent $4B investment in Anthropic as tech giants continue to ally with AI startups.
Anthropic also signed a $3B+ deal to use Google Cloud, aligning on resources as Google aims to catch up in cloud computing by tying its services to leading AI innovations.
Why it matters: The race is on between AI startups competing for resources and partners. Tech giants are placing their bets on the future AI leaders — and Google and Amazon are two eye-popping names to have on the investor list.

AI TRAINING
📸 Unlock new image capabilities with ChatGPT update
ChatGPT’s latest rollout allows you to upload an image (of anything) without saying what the object is and generating another variation.
Here is a creative example of how to leverage the new combination via @ldjconfirmed:
Upload an image: For this example, the user uploaded a realistic photo of a capybara. Try it with your pet, a favorite photo you’ve taken, etc.
Prompt: Direct ChatGPT to create an image based on your uploaded one in a particular style, format, etc. Ex: “Turn the attached photo of [subject] into [an oil painting, cartoon character, etc.]
Refine and iterate: Continue conversationally editing and directing ChatGPT to make changes as needed!
This image workflow is just one of the many new possibilities unlocked with OpenAI’s latest update. Happy creating!
