MILITARY TECH
🩺 UK military unveils ultra-realistic trauma simulator

The Rundown: The UK Ministry of Defence just introduced a new surgical training mannequin called SAM (Surgical Advanced Mannequin) that accurately mimics gruesome war injuries.
The details:
SAM replicates battlefield wounds and conditions using CT scans and 3D printing.
It can breathe, bleed, and undergo exploratory surgery for medics to practice life-saving techniques.
The gory realism provides valuable preparation for military surgeons before deploying overseas.
The newest SAM model was recently implemented for the first time in full-scale field hospital training exercises.
The relevance: Medical mannequins have come a long way from the classic CPR dummies of the past. These ultra-realistic tools can help surgeons better prepare for gruesome situations that were previously impossible to simulate well.

MATERIAL BREAKTHROUGHS
🏡 New 'cooling ceramic' enhances building energy efficiency

Image source: City University of Hong Kong
The Rundown: Researchers at City University of Hong Kong just developed a ceramic material that passively cools buildings without electricity or refrigerants.
The details:
The ultra-white ceramic scatters almost all sunlight, reflecting 99.6% back out and keeping interiors cooler.
It's made from durable alumina ceramic that stands up to weather, resists UV damage, and mimics the bio-white of the Cyphochilus beetle.
The porous nanostructure also enhances cooling from water evaporation on hot days.
Why it matters: This versatile, durable material could substantially cut energy use across the construction sector — reducing huge amounts of power and emissions from traditional AC usage.

💰 OpenAI recruits Google AI experts with HUGE offers

The Rundown: OpenAI is reportedly enticing top AI researchers from Google to join them with highly lucrative compensation packages as high as a whopping $10 million per year.
The details:
OpenAI's recruiters are focused on luring senior AI talent at Google working on models like Gemini.
The supersized offers come as OpenAI nears completion of a major employee stock sale that could triple its valuation.
New AI chip projects, including Microsoft’s ‘Athena’ and AMD’s MI300X, could provide hardware advantages to OpenAI versus Google's TPUs.
The relevance: While we often highlight the escalating AI race for the top LLMs, there is also a war being fought for the top AI worker talent. No matter the company — its certainly a good time to be a top AI researcher.

HOLLYWOOD & AI
🎬 Hollywood actors strike ends with deal on AI use

The Rundown: The SAG-AFTRA actors strike has finally ended after reaching a tentative deal, following months of negotiations over AI use and streaming residuals.
The details:
The 118-day strike was the longest in Hollywood history, halting many productions.
A major sticking point was reuse of AI scans to digitally recreate actors without consent or compensation.
The studios' previous proposal allowed unlimited scans of veteran actors post-mortem, which the union opposed.
The final deal concedes some restrictions and payments around AI model use — and comes on the heels of Hollywood writers securing landmark restrictions on studios' use of AI scripts in September.
Why it matters: The strike ends for now, letting Hollywood productions resume. But with AI’s growth not likely to slow any time soon, the issue of its use in the industry is likely far from settled.

🛫 Samson Switchblade flying car takes first flight

The Rundown: The Samson Switchblade, a street-legal vehicle that transforms into a small airplane, successfully completed its first test flight after 14 years of development.
The details:
The Switchblade flies at 200 mph with a 500 mile range (35 gallon fuel tank), and converts from a motorcycle to a plane in just 3 minutes.
Over 2,300 reservations have been made for the $170,000 vehicle since its announcement over a decade ago.
The model qualifies as both a motorcycle and experimental aircraft to simplify regulations.
The first flight reached 500 ft altitude and lasted 6 minutes before landing safely in Moses Lake, WA.
The relevance: Once thought of as just science fiction, the Switchblade concept shows the potential (and demand) for a practical flying car. Though production, infrastructure, and regulations are still likely years away.

🍽️ Ceiling sensors track food waste in kitchens

The Rundown: A startup called Positive Carbon is installing camera and lidar sensors in commercial kitchens to track exactly what food enters the trash bins, helping reduce waste by 50%.
The details:
The sensors are mounted on the ceiling above the food waste bins to autonomously monitor what is discarded.
Advanced data analytics are then run to uncover trends and patterns in what is being over-ordered, over-prepped, or over-served.
After a $2.3M funding round, Positive Carbon plans to expand to capabilities like tracking nutritional content in real-time.
Our thoughts: Automated waste tracking is a clever way to cut costs and litter in kitchens — and the potential is limitless for AI to further optimize the food chain while reducing environmental impact.

📍Humane’s smartphone-disrupting AI Pin is here

The Rundown: Humane has officially released more details on its hotly-anticipated $699 AI Pin, a wearable device for accessing AI hands-free through voice, gestures, and a built-in projector — with preorders set to begin on Nov. 16.
The details:
The lightweight gadget magnetically attaches to clothing and has no screen, instead controlled via touchpad, camera, laser, and built-in speakers.
Humane's AI mic software provides access to LLMs like ChatGPT and Microsoft models and aims to simplify AI use without downloading apps, settings, or always-on listening.
Demoed features include messaging, summaries, music, visual Q&A, photos, real-time translation, and nutrition analysis via food images.
Humane sees the device as a hands-free replacement to phones, and the subscription comes with its own number and service via T-Mobile.
Our thoughts: We first wrote a piece on Humane’s device in July, but these new details shed some serious light on one of the first pieces of consumer AI wearable hardware available on the market (startup since 2018).
Is it weird that of all the features mentioned, we’re most excited about the health and nutrition feature? (Demo’d at 5:55 in full launch video here)

🔥 Automate security questionnaire answering with AI
The Rundown: There’s nothing more tedious than answering security questionnaires all day. We’d rather fight Bowser in Super Mario Bros.

And, they created a fun 8-bit video game to show you how it works.
Check out the interactive adventure about how you can use Conveyor’s GPT-security questionnaire automation software to destroy pesky ‘questionnaire villains’.

MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS
🎤 AI detects diabetes through subtle voice changes

The Rundown: Researchers have developed an AI system that can detect type 2 diabetes with up to 89% accuracy just by analyzing characteristics of a smartphone recording of a person's voice.
Key points:
The AI studied pitch, strength, vibration, and shimmer (breathiness/hoarseness) in 18,000 voice recordings from 267 people.
It flagged subtle differences imperceptible to humans but correlated with diabetes, with 89% accuracy in females and 86% in males.
The cause of why diabetes changes a voice is unclear — but may relate to vocal cord neuropathy and muscle weakness.
Broader trials are needed to validate accuracy — but If proven, voice screening via smartphones could enable low-cost diabetes detection.
Why it matters: With half of adults with diabetes going undiagnosed and 86% in low and middle-income countries, a test that requires just a voice recording would be a game changer for getting diagnosis and treatment to the masses.

Why it matters: With half of adults with diabetes going undiagnosed and 86% in low and middle-income countries, a test that requires just a voice recording would be a game changer for getting diagnosis and treatment to the masses.

SAFETY TECH
📱 Your voice could reveal how drunk you are

The Rundown: A new study from Stanford University shows that smartphones can potentially monitor blood alcohol levels with 98% accuracy by passively analyzing changes in a person's voice.
The details:
18 participants read tongue twisters while drinking, allowing researchers to correlate voice patterns with intoxication.
Voice recordings were taken repeatedly and matched to breathalyzer tests, with machine learning isolating vocal features like frequency and pitch to correlate with intoxication.
The tech could provide non-invasive, real-time alerts against driving or other risky behaviors while intoxicated.
The relevance: As we also highlighted in a separate story in today’s Rundown AI (detecting diabetes from voice recordings) — there is serious untapped potential in analyzing audio. This type of innovation could be standard on future smart devices.

MEDICAL TECH
🦴 New composite stimulates bone regrowth

The Rundown: Researchers just developed an implantable scaffold made of bioactive glass and polymer that aids broken bone healing by inhibiting bacteria and promoting tissue regrowth.
The details:
The customized scaffolds are designed to fit severe break sites based on CT scans and replace missing bone.
The bioactive glass component raises pH to hamper bacteria and transforms into a bone-like compound called hydroxyapatite.
The polymer provides structural strength, with the scaffold degrading as the bone heals over 6-7 years.
The relevance: This clever composite elegantly combines infection prevention and accelerated healing. If proven, it can greatly benefit many patients — and reduce costly follow-up procedures.

AMAZON
📦 Amazon dedicates team to 'Olympus' AI model

The Rundown: Amazon is reportedly investing millions in training a massive language model codenamed 'Olympus' to rival AI leaders like OpenAI, as well as eventually incorporating it into its Alexa speakers and online platform.
The details:
Olympus is reported to have 2 trillion parameters, which could make it one of the world's largest AI models (GPT-4 had 1 trillion).
The project is led by former head of Alexa Rohit Prasad, now Amazon's head scientist for AGI.
Amazon believes homegrown, state-of-the-art models could provide an edge for its AWS offerings against competitors.
Its previous LLM ‘Titan’ was delayed following ChatGPT’s impressive launch, which Amazon execs felt was ‘far superior’ to their model.
Our thoughts: Though currently lagging behind, Amazon has the resources and the reach to catch up quickly. Integrating a massive LLM into a product like Alexa could be another mass adoption moment for AI consumer tech.
They also have some interesting data for their LLM to train on that others don’t: What you buy.

📱 Samsung releases new ‘Gauss’ LLM

The Rundown: Tech giant Samsung just threw its hat into the LLM ring at the company’s AI Forum, teasing a new generative model called ‘Gauss’, which boasts language, coding, and image generation capabilities.
The details:
Samsung says the on-device AI will be implemented in future products, with speculation around the upcoming Galaxy S24 phone.
Samsung has an AI Red Team focused on responsible development, along with on-device processing for privacy.
Language can generate emails, summaries, and translations, Code is specialized for coding tasks and workflows, and Image can create new visual content and modify existing images.
The relevance: While Samsung’s entry into the LLM space was inevitable, it’s unclear what benefits this model offers over current leaders. But like Amazon, the potential for consumer integration within Samsung’s products is massive.

📶 Master ChatGPT prompts with a 6-step formula
Want to take your ChatGPT usage to the next level and get the best possible outputs? Follow this structured framework to master the art of the prompt:
Task: Clearly define the objective, and be concise yet detailed. Simple vs complex examples: Simple: "Generate a 3-month diet program." Complex: "Analyze collected user feedback, summarize top 3 takeaways for improvement, and categorize rest by importance."
Context: Provide relevant background info to frame the request. More context helps ChatGPT understand you and your needs.
Examples: Including examples to guide structure and style can dramatically improve output quality. Examples allow ChatGPT to mimic the style, structure, and tone of almost anything.
Persona: Adopt a specific viewpoint and get responses from a particular perspective. Ex: therapist, business CEO, math tutor, etc.
Format: Specify desired output format like table, bullets, email, code blocks — ChatGPT is great at providing content in unique ways.
Tone: Set the mood of the output — casual, formal, enthusiastic, etc. to ensure your content resonates emotionally.
While not every step is always needed, focusing on key elements in order to produce the best results. Happy prompting!
