OPENAI
📰 8 major U.S. newspapers sue OpenAI

Image source: The New York Times
The Rundown: Eight major U.S. newspapers just filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing the tech giants of illegally using their copyrighted articles to train AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot.
The details:
Newspapers in the filing include The NY Daily News, The Chicago Tribune, The Denver Post, The San Jose Mercury News, and more.
The papers allege that "millions" of articles have been used to train models without permission or compensation.
They claim the use of copyrighted content allows chatbots to compete as sources of news, while also attributing inaccurate info to the papers.
The lawsuits come as OpenAI continues to ink deals with other major publishers, including the Financial Times, Axel Springer, and more.
Why it matters: Another day, another lawsuit against OpenAI… But for every paper suing the AI giants, it seems like another is striking a lucrative deal for data and training.

🔮 A Mysterious ‘gpt2-chatbot’ appears

Image source: Andrew Gao (@itsandrewgao on X)
The Rundown: A mysterious, impressive new AI model called “gpt2-chatbot” just appeared on the Chatbot Arena, showing off advanced capabilities and leading to speculation that it could be an early OpenAI stealth test of GPT 4.5.
The details:
The model lacks any official documentation or attribution, but reportedly self-identifies as ChatGPT and created by OpenAI when asked.
Users have praised the model for its reasoning, math, coding and even ASCII art skills that seem to match or exceed GPT-4 and above models in testing.
Additional speculation includes OpenAI doing quiet benchmarking for a new model before publicly releasing it.
To add fuel to the speculative fire, Sam Altman later posted that he has “a soft spot for gpt2“.
Why it matters: There is always an air of mystery surrounding OpenAI, and while this model could just be the rumor mill kicking into overdrive — its capabilities are impressing some of the top minds in the AI community, regardless of who is behind it or what it is.

❤️🩹 AI-powered alert system saves lives

The Rundown: A new study of 16,000 patients in Taiwan found that AI intervention significantly reduced deaths in hospitals by using an AI alert system trained on ECG tests.
The details:
The AI was trained on over 450,000 ECG tests and survival data to predict a patient’s risk of death and alert physicians to those at high risk.
In the trial, the AI alerted physicians when a patient’s ECG indicated they were in the top 5% risk category.
The AI intervention reduced overall deaths by 31% and deaths from heart issues by over 90% for high-risk patients.
Why it matters: This trial showcases the potential of AI to save lives in healthcare settings — while working with physicians, not replacing them. AI alert systems like these will be standard in the future, providing more rapid, targeted care to those in need.

APPLE
📱 Apple and OpenAI discuss integrations

The Rundown: According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is revisiting conversations with OpenAI about integrating the company’s AI into the coming iPhone iOS 18 update.
The details:
Apple and OpenAI are negotiating terms for a potential partnership that would see OpenAI’s features integrated into iOS 18.
The news comes ahead of June’s WWDC event, which is expected to reveal the tech giant’s major AI announcements.
Apple is also exploring a deal with Google to license Gemini, potentially striking agreements with both AI giants.
Why it matters: Apple’s AI era is coming, and all the leading companies might be coming along for the ride. With OpenAI, Google, and Apple’s own AI potentially integrating into the new iOS, Apple has the potential to start the next 'ChatGPT moment' for major AI adoption by putting AI directly into the hands of its 1.4B+ iPhone users.

SHENGSHU AI
🎥 Chinese firm reveals Sora ‘competitor’

The Rundown: Chinese AI firm ShengShu just introduced Vidu, a text-to-video AI model that reportedly rivals OpenAI’s unreleased Sora in capability and performance.
The details:
Vidu can generate high-quality, 16-second videos at 1080p resolution from text prompts.
Vidu’s development started in 2022 with a proprietary architecture that predates Sora’s DiT workflow.
A live demonstration in Beijing showed the model’s ability to simulate real-world details such as accurate lighting, shadows, facial expressions, and more.
Why it matters: While it feels like a stretch to call this a true ‘rival’ to Sora (16-second vs. 60-second generations feels like a big gap), China’s AI models continue to gain on U.S. leaders. With Sora still unreleased to the public, its promise is still largely unrealized — opening the door to the competition.

OPENAI
🧠 OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT memory

The Rundown: OpenAI began rolling out its ChatGPT memory feature to a larger group of Free and Plus users, giving ChatGPT a new ability to carry over learnings between conversations.
The details:
ChatGPT with memory enabled can remember details and preferences shared by users across chat conversations.
Users can teach ChatGPT to remember specific information by explicitly prompting it (e.g. prompt: “remember this for future chats“).
Users can also track memories retained by ChatGPT in the settings → personalization tab.
Why it matters: Retaining memory across chats is a major unlock, ideally eliminating the need to restart new chats and lengthy conversations. But as we’ve seen with other features like GPTs and Custom Instructions, these releases are often a work in progress — with usefulness that might not be immediately apparent to all users.

🍎 Apple unveils OpenELM for on-device AI

The Rundown: Apple just quietly released OpenELM, a family of small, open-source language models designed to run efficiently on devices like iPhones and Macs.
The details:
OpenELM consists of eight models with four different parameter sizes (270M, 450M, 1.1B, and 3B), all trained on public datasets.
The model family is optimized for on-device use, allowing for AI-powered tasks to be handled without relying on cloud servers.
OpenELM slightly outperforms comparable open-source models like OLMo despite requiring 2x less training data.
Also open-sourced is CoreNet, the library used to train OpenELM — along with models allowing for ‘efficient inference and fine-tuning on Apple devices.’
Why it matters: It feels like everyone is getting in on the small model game, and this release marks yet another breadcrumb toward Apple’s potential on-device AI moves coming at WWDC. Also notable is the open-source release — a distinct turn from Apple’s previously restrictive and secretive ways.

🤖 Elon Musk: Tesla is an AI company

The Rundown: Elon Musk provided new updates on Tesla’s Optimus autonomous robots during the company’s 2024 Q1 earnings call — stating that Tesla should be thought of as an AI or robotics company, not an automaker.
The details:
Musk said he believes Optimus will be ‘more valuable than everything else [in the company] combined’.
He revealed that Optimus should be doing ‘useful tasks’ in Tesla factories by the end of the year and sold externally by the end of 2025.
A new graphic featured Optimus at the top of Tesla’s ecosystem chart, with the robots accounting for ‘a majority’ of the company’s long-term value.
Tesla’s shares surged following the call despite missing earnings expectations.
Why it matters: While many still look at Tesla and think of cars, Musk’s AI and robotic visions are operating on a grander scale. The confident predictions on Optimus also show where the company is heading — with the ‘sentient’ humanoid robot at the center of Musk’s futuristic plans.

HOLLYWOOD & AI
🎬 Hollywood begins AI cloning

The Rundown: Leading Hollywood talent agency CAA has reportedly been testing an initiative called CAA Vault, allowing A-list clients to create AI clones of themselves to open new creative opportunities.
The details:
CAA partnered with AI firms to scan clients’ bodies, faces, and voices, creating AI replicas for uses like reshooting, dubbing, and stunt double superimposing.
CAA's goal is to eventually make the tech available industry-wide, not just to its clients.
Hollywood has already been bracing for AI’s impact, with Tyler Perry even halting studio expansions after seeing OpenAI’s Sora video capabilities.
Why it matters: While the industry grapples with AI’s coming implications, CAA is taking proactive measures to help clients benefit from the shift. As models continue to improve, the difference between hiring Ryan Gosling or his AI replica may become imperceptible to the average fan.

AI & MUSIC
🎤 Drake posts AI-powered diss tracks

The Rundown: Drake just posted "Taylor Made Freestyle", a new diss track aimed at Kendrick Lamar featuring AI vocals of rappers Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg.
The details:
Drake's track uses AI to create verses that convincingly sound like Tupac and Snoop Dogg taking shots at Kendrick Lamar.
A diss track using Lamar’s vocals went viral last week, fooling fans after it turned out to be AI-generated by 23-year-old Sy the Rapper.
“Taylor Made Freestyle” is the second ‘Drake’ song of the weekend, with another called ‘Push Ups’ released earlier that carried additional AI speculation.
Why it matters: The inability to distinguish human-created music from AI generations is happening faster than anybody expected, and some of the world’s most popular musicians publicly leveraging the tech is sure to raise some serious questions about music’s AI future.

AI RESEARCH
🧠 Report: AI surpasses humans

The Rundown: Stanford University released its 2023 AI Index report that tracks worldwide trends in AI — revealing that AI has surpassed human-level performance on the majority of significant benchmarks.
The details:
AI now exceeds human performance on benchmarks for tasks like image classification, reading comprehension, visual reasoning, and more.
Many benchmarks have become obsolete due to AI’s acceleration, with researchers rushing to develop more tests to measure capabilities.
Closed-source models still lead (for now), with the AI industry still dominated by major players due to the increase in training costs.
LLMs are also becoming more truthful and less prone to "hallucinations".
Why it matters: The most staggering part of this report is that it doesn’t even cover 2024, which has already seen major model advances like Claude 3, Llama 3, and more to come. As quickly as things are moving, each year is likely going to be magnitudes crazier — whether the world is ready or not.
