LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

SOFTBANK

🇯🇵 SoftBank founder builds an AI chip company

The Rundown: SoftBank founder (and multi-billionaire) Masayoshi Son is reportedly looking to raise $100B to launch ‘Project Izanagi,’ an AI chip venture to compete with NVIDIA and push towards AGI.

The details:

  • Izanagi would aim to compete with chipmaking leader NVIDIA and complement Son's chip design firm, Arm Holdings.

  • With $30B potentially from SoftBank and $70B from Middle Eastern backers, it would be one of the largest AI bets to date.

  • Son believes AGI will be realized within the next 10 years.

  • The venture is separate from Sam Altman’s chip production ambitions, though the two have reportedly spoken about potentially ‘joining forces’.

Why it matters: Global titans are racing to acquire the shovels for the AI chip gold rush, and Izanagi brings another well-funded challenger to the arena. If creating AGI is a matter of continuing to scale compute power, these new ventures may help avoid projected chip shortages that stand in the way.

REDDIT

💰 Reddit inks major AI data deal

The Rundown: Reddit has reportedly signed a $60M annual deal granting an unnamed AI firm access to its user-generated content for model training, with the deal coming prior to the company’s upcoming IPO.

The details:

  • Users have created Reddit's trove of content without compensation, sparking backlash over commercial use for AI training.

  • Reddit also reportedly considered blocking Google search crawlers if an AI data deal could not be found.

  • The $60M/year deal could establish a framework for future AI licensing agreements with social platforms.

Why it matters: As human data continues to fuel AI’s rise, social media platforms will increasingly find themselves with a goldmine of data ripe for training new models. While Meta and X have their own AI ambitions, others (like Reddit) may be content to reap the sudden external value of their data.

💼 How to use ChatGPT and Zapier to prepare for meetings

The Rundown: With Zapier's AI workflows and ChatGPT integration, you can create a Chief of Staff agent to prep you before your meetings.

Hat tip to Olivia Moore for the brilliant idea!

Step-by-step:

  1. Go to Zapier to create your automation.

  2. Connect your calendar and have the trigger fire 15 minutes before the start of the meeting, and instruct Zapier to filter the type of meetings you need help preparing for. For example, exclude meetings where the organizer’s email does not contain your company’s domain name.

  3. Instruct Zapier to extract the company name from the meeting organizer’s email address.

  4. Connect and prompt ChatGPT to research the company and the attendees and to write a summary of the purpose of the meeting.

  5. Connect your email to have ChatGPT send you the meeting summary so you are ready for your next meeting!

👀 Mistral stealth drops demo of ‘next’ model

The Rundown: French AI startup Mistral just quietly released a new model called ‘next’ for testing.

The details:

  • The model was made available to try on LMSYS Direct Chat, and only announced via a single Discord comment.

  • Early users tested the model on coding and reasoning, finding it on par or better than GPT-4.

  • Mistral received a massive $415M funding round in December, valuing the company at $2B.

Why it matters: Mistral feels like an absolute powerhouse lurking in the shadows, quietly releasing models that are pushing the top chatbots on the leaderboard. If a ‘next’ release does end up surpassing GPT-4, it would mark a milestone moment for open-source.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

OPENAI

🎥 OpenAI stealth drops Sora video generation model

The Rundown: OpenAI just unexpectedly introduced Sora, an impressive text-to-video AI model able to create realistic and cohesive video generations up to a minute long directly from text prompts and images.

The details:

  • Sora combines aspects of GPT and DALL-E to better understand physical dynamics and maintain details across generated shots for realistic outputs.

  • The model can generate video up to 60 seconds from both text prompts and still images, and can also insert scenes within existing video.

  • Sora is currently being offered to red-teamers and select creators to gain early feedback before potential wider release.

  • While training data is still unknown, NVIDIA AI researcher Dr. Jim Fan speculates the model was developed using synthetic data from Unreal Engine, calling it a ‘simulation of many worlds, real or fantastical’.

Why it matters: OpenAI just took a massive video leap out of nowhere, bringing us closer to outputs nearly indistinguishable from reality. Sora looks to bring both creative unlocks and new panic-inducing capabilities for bad actors. For better or worse… the AI video game just completely changed.

Check out some of the impressive video outputs here.

GOOGLE

Google unveils Gemini 1.5 with massive context window

The Rundown: A week after launching Gemini Ultra, Google just revealed an upgraded Gemini 1.5 model — featuring a groundbreaking 1M token context window (up to 10M in testing) to process vastly more data than previous AI systems.

The details:

  • Gemini 1.5 Pro can handle 700,000 words of text, 30,000 lines of code, 11 hours of audio, or 1 hour of video — enabling groundbreaking processing capabilities.

  • The upgrade maintains performance despite the large context window, with the ability to analyze granular details from huge blocks of text, code, and videos.

  • 1.5 will be released to the public with a 128K context window, scaling up as the model is improved.

  • Currently, the full 1M token version is only available to approved developers and enterprise customers.

  • Beyond the expanded context, Gemini 1.5 brings improvements for more efficient performance on par with the top-tier Gemini Ultra model.

Why it matters: After just rolling out Gemini Advanced, Google shipped fast with another major upgrade. The massive context window unlocks new capabilities like analyzing entire books, full movies, large codebases, and more — giving Gemini a serious differentiator and a new leg up in the LLM wars.

AI TRAINING

How to verify Gemini’s responses with Google Search

The Rundown: Gemini's latest performance and accuracy improvements are impressive, but it's important not to trust responses blindly (due to hallucinations). To verify correctness, you can now compare Gemini's answers with Google search results.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Head to Gemini (free & premium) and enter your question or prompt.

  2. Click the Google logo under Gemini's reply.

  3. Google checks Gemini’s answer and marks the text according to what it finds. Green highlighted text means it found similar content. Orange highlight means it found different content.

  4. You can then click on the highlighted content to get the relevant link from Google’s sources so that you can read more.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

🚨 Is Michigan selling student data for AI training?

The Rundown: The University of Michigan is facing major backlash on X (formerly Twitter) after a third-party vendor of the institution advertised datasets of lectures and papers for licensing to AI firms for training LLMs, without student consent.

The details:

  • A Google DeepMind engineer posted a screenshot of an email received that offered over 80 hours of academic speeches and 829 unpublished student papers.

  • The advertisement was from Catalyst Research Alliance, with sample datasets including lectures from 1999 — and a price tag as high as $25k for the papers and recordings.

  • However, a Michigan spokesperson said the information shared was ‘inaccurate’ and the data was ‘voluntarily contributed.’

Why it matters: The University of Michigan says the data was voluntary, but it’s tough to argue that students and professors in the late 90’s and early 2000’s were consenting to being part of LLM training. This incident highlights the inevitable ethical issues coming as human data becomes increasingly valuable for AI models.

OPENAI

😱 Andrej Karpathy departs OpenAI

The Rundown: Renowned AI researcher and founding OpenAI member Andrej Karpathy just announced he is departing the company for a second time, posting on X that he plans to pursue personal projects.

The details:

  • Karpathy helped found OpenAI in 2016 before serving as Tesla's Senior Director of AI for five years, rejoining Sam Altman and co. in 2023.

  • The departure follows OpenAI’s drama with Altman and the board, which has since relegated fellow co-founder Ilya Sutskever to an unclear role in the company.

  • Karpathy emphasized that no drama or event led to the departure and that he was simply pursuing personal projects (including his famous AI lectures on YouTube).

Why it matters: Between the mystery surrounding Ilya Sutskever and now Karpathy’s departure, something seems fishy between the science and business arms of OpenAI. All eyes now turn to where Karpathy heads next — with likely no shortage of suitors for one of the world’s top AI minds.

🌐 Apple makes mysterious AI domain purchase

The Rundown: Apple just acquired a new domain shortly after open-sourcing a new image editing model and releasing several AI-focused research papers, sparking speculation of major AI plans for its productivity apps.

The details:

  • Apple recently purchased the rights to iWork.ai at an expired domain auction, coinciding with expected major AI moves for Apple’s suite of products.

  • iWork has been used in Apple branding for nearly 20 years, referring to the suite of OS apps, including Keynote, Pages, and Numbers

  • Apple recently released MLLM-Guided Image Editing, and reports have claimed iOS 18 will highlight Apple's biggest AI leap yet.

Why it matters: Between MGIE's release, new AI research, and the iOS 18 rumors, Apple appears to finally be building momentum in the sector after a slow start. But this domain purchase making headlines could be the rumor mill trying to will new AI moves into existence. Patience, Apple lovers!

AI RESEARCH

🔮 LLMs improve human forecasting accuracy

The Rundown: New research just found that access to a GPT-4T LLM assistant boosted forecasting accuracy by 23% over basic AI access, regardless of the assistant's bias — indicating benefit beyond prediction accuracy.

The details:

  • The study tested both biased (instructed to give extreme forecasts) and unbiased (instructed to be an objective ‘superforecaster’) assistants.

  • Both biased and unbiased LLM assistants helped humans make much better forecasts.

  • Excluding one confusing question, the unbiased assistant improved human accuracy by 43%, while the biased one improved it by 28%.

Why it matters: This study focused on predictions, but the ability of even biased AI to enhance human reasoning likely applies to many judgment-heavy areas like business, policymaking, and medicine. One day soon, we may be bouncing ideas off a panel of super-intelligent assistants to analyze a decision.

TODAY’S HEADLINES

META

🥽 Zuck: Quest ‘better product’ than Vision Pro

Image source: Mark Zuckerberg on Instagram

The Rundown: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to social media to compare his company’s headset with the newly-released Apple Vision Pro, arguing that the Quest 3 is ‘the better product’ based on factors like cost, weight, and immersion.

The details:

  • Zuckerberg highlighted the Quest 3's lighter weight for comfort, lack of wires for freedom of motion, and much lower $1500 price tag.

  • He praised aspects like the Vision Pro's display resolution but said it required too many tradeoffs — convinced that the Quest is better for ‘the vast majority of things’.

  • Zuck reiterated Meta's head start in the headset race while slighting "fanboys" who assume Apple leads in new technologies.

Why it matters: As Apple tries to stake claim to the mixed-reality headset throne, Meta is here to remind the world who came first. While the Vision Pro has captured the deadlines, Zuck seems confident and reassured that his tech can out-duel Apple’s hype.

The details:

  • Researchers at Shanghai’s Fundan University were able to charge and discharge the battery completely for up to 700 cycles, a milestone in the field of energy storage.

  • Calcium is 2,500 times more abundant than lithium, making the battery a more sustainable option than traditional lithium-ion tech.

  • It also maintains stability when bent, which could enable woven, wearable textile batteries to be compatible with smartphones.

Why it matters: While battery tech has seemingly lagged behind other breakthroughs, it feels like a revolution is coming soon. This alternative suggests possibilities for cheaper, safer batteries minus lithium supply constraints — with potential uses from EVs to flexible electronics.

AI RESEARCH

🤖 Cohere’s massively multilingual Aya model

The Rundown: Cohere researchers just introduced Aya, a multilingual AI model that expands capabilities across 101 languages, 50% of which are lower-resourced — significantly expanding coverage while maintaining effectiveness.

The details:

  • Aya was trained on 2.5 times more data, covering over twice as many languages as prior multilingual AI models.

  • Despite significantly greater language coverage, Aya outperformed comparable models like mT0, BLOOMZ, and Bactrian-X across benchmarks.

  • Extensive data weighting and pruning balances representation across higher and lower-resourced languages, expanding beyond data-rich languages.

Why it matters: By greatly expanding language coverage, Aya works towards democratizing access to AI capabilities beyond dialects with the most data for training — while still maintaining high performance. The days of universal translation and global access to AI chatbots are inching closer.

TODAY’S HEADLINES

LYFT

🚕 Lyft shares surge, then plunge after earnings typo

The Rundown: Lyft shares initially spiked over 60% on stronger-than-expected earnings but plummeted after a typo in a key growth figure in what turned into a rollercoaster day for the rideshare company.

The details:

  • The earnings release said 2024 margin expansion would be 500 basis points (5%), but the CFO corrected it to only 50 (.5%) on the call.

  • After soaring 64% on the initial news, the typo erased over $2B in Lyft’s market value.

  • Q4 numbers were positive, with a 4% revenue rise to $1.22B, and the company expects positive free cash flow for the first time in 2024.

  • Lyft shares have struggled since its IPO in 2019 and were down 19% this year prior to reporting.

Why it matters: Lyft’s wild stock chart looks like something out of the crypto world. While everyone makes a mistake from time to time — doing it on a public earnings report has to be one of the more expensive typos in history.

ENERGY TECH

⛵️ Giant tidal ‘kite’ delivers first power to grid

The Rundown: A 28-ton tidal energy device called the Dragon 12 has started generating renewable electricity in the Faroe Islands from marine currents, marking a milestone for ocean energy.

The details:

  • The kite moves in a repeated figure-eight motion to generate water flow around the device.

  • It uses currents to produce 1.2MW — enough to power around 1,000 homes.

  • It’s designed by Swedish company Minesto to be smaller and more efficient than massive tidal turbines.

  • With €40m in EU funding, the Dragon 12 demonstrates a new competitive renewable energy approach suitable for islands and coastal communities.

Why it matters: Harnessing reliable tidal currents could augment less consistent wind and solar options, especially for more remote areas — and modular tech like Minesto's kite helps pave the way for competitive and scalable marine energy.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

NVIDIA

💰 Nvidia CEO downplays Altman’s AI chip fundraising

The Rundown: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said he expects computing advances to cap AI costs well below the reported $7T Sam Altman is targeting for semiconductor production, grabbing headlines during a conversation at the World Government Summit in Dubai.

The details:

  • Huang anticipates faster chips will increase efficiency, reducing overall AI spending needs significantly lower than Altman’s $7T chip initiative.

  • The CEO urged nations to use cultural data to build "sovereign AI" infrastructure and intelligence, emphasizing the need for countries to own their own data.

  • He also estimated the global cost of AI data centers to double to $2T in the next 5 years.

  • Nvidia also made headlines in the stock market, with its market value rising to $1.8T and surpassing Amazon on Monday.

Why it matters: In Nvidia’s eyes, data is the new gold — and while AI compute demands seem endless now, Huang clearly anticipates a shift to efficiency over compute. With two titans both accelerating in different paths, is there room for both to succeed? Or is a collision inevitable?

AI & THE WORKPLACE

🫂 Gen Z embraces AI with open arms

The Rundown: Unlike older generations more fearful of AI's impact in the workforce, Gen Z views AI tools as a career advantage and are actively integrating it into their studies and job applications.

The details:

  • A third of 2024 grads and over half of tech majors are planning to use AI professionally, according to a trends report from Handshake.

  • 48% of Gen Z thinks AI will advance their careers by providing faster knowledge access.

  • LinkedIn saw a 75% monthly increase in AI skills added to Gen Z profiles in 2023.

  • 57% of Gen Z respondents and 62% of millennials reported being more excited about benefits of AI than worried about the risks.

Why it matters: Most of the talk surrounding AI and work is centered on taking jobs — but Gen Z doesn’t seem to share the fears of older counterparts. Just like millennials with computers or smartphones, Gen Z will likely see using AI as second nature as it integrates into every aspect of our lives.

AI TRAINING

📊 How to convert a diagram to text to learn faster

The Rundown: With leading LLMs rapidly improving image-to-text vision capabilities, you can now quickly summarise and describe confusing diagrams and charts using ChatGPT or Gemini. Try it with the image above!

Step-by-step:

  1. Go to ChatGPT or Gemini. You need to upgrade to premium versions of the tools for vision to work.

  2. Based on our tests, ChatGPT+ Vision is slightly better than Gemini Advanced Vision. However, Gemini offers two months free.

  3. Upload a confusing graph, chart, diagram, or even your homework.

  4. Provide a prompt asking to explain the diagram and summarize the key takeaways, such as: “This is a picture of my [X]. Please summarize key takeaways in bullet point format“.

  5. Continue asking questions until you have a good understanding of the content.

AI RESEARCH

✏️ Apple research unlocks new AI animation workflow

The Rundown: Apple researchers just introduced Keyframer, a tool to transform static images into animations via natural language prompts with LLMs.

The details:

  • Keyframer allows users to animate Scalable Vector Graphics by describing the desired animation via a GPT prompt.

  • Keyframer leverages GPT-4 to convert the user’s natural language prompt into CSS animation code, which it applies to the image.

  • Users can iteratively build animations through sequential prompting, with natural language commands catering to both novices and experts.

Why it matters: By combining prompting and editing, Keyframer shows how LLMs can enable wider audiences to engage in animation creation — lowering the barrier to entry into what was once a labor-intensive and niche expertise.

WAYMO

🔥 Waymo driverless car set on fire as tensions grow

The Rundown: A crowd surrounded and lit fire to a Waymo self-driving taxi during a weekend celebration in San Francisco, destroying the vehicle and highlighting tensions around the tech’s use in the city.

The details:

  • A crowd surrounded the autonomous vehicle, breaking the glass and throwing fireworks inside to engulf it in flames.

  • No passengers were in the vehicle, and the motives for the vandalism were unclear.

  • Distrust of driverless tech is reportedly high in San Francisco after recent Waymo accidents and traffic issues.

  • Past disruptions include last year’s ‘Week of Cone’, which saw groups disrupt autonomous vehicles with traffic cones, and individual attacks on Cruise robotaxis.

Why it matters: The battle between U.S. cities and self-driving tech continues — and the event highlights the human factor that companies must consider when developing autonomous tech. This is why we can’t have nice things!
