🚔 Google engineer steals AI secrets

The Rundown: Federal prosecutors just charged an ex-Google engineer with stealing over 500 confidential files related to AI infrastructure while secretly working for two Chinese AI startups.
The details:
Linwei Ding worked on Google’s AI supercomputing systems and reportedly uploaded 2-years worth of data to his personal Google Cloud account.
He was secretly hired as CTO of a Beijing AI startup and founded his own Shanghai-based AI firm, hiding it all from Google.
Ding had a Google colleague scan his badge at Google’s U.S. office to make it look like he was there when he was actually in China.
Google grew suspicious and alerted the FBI, with Ding now facing up to 10 years in prison.
Why it matters: An insider heist of Google’s sensitive AI assets is an alarming wake-up call about China’s relentless campaign to chase down the U.S. AI tech advantage. This case is also, unfortunately, just a preview of the high-stakes espionage ahead in the battle for AI supremacy.

INFLECTION AI
📶 Inflection upgrade nears GPT-4

The Rundown: Inflection just launched Inflection-2.5, a major upgrade to the model powering its Pi personal AI assistant — now capable of delivering near GPT-4 level performance.
The details:
Inflection-2.5 achieves 94% of GPT-4's performance across tasks, despite using just 40% of the training compute.
The upgrade displays major increases from Inflection-1 across the board, particularly in coding and mathematics.
Inflection noted major gains in user engagement, boasting 6M monthly users and an average chat length of 33 minutes.
The chatbot also now incorporates real-time web search.
Why it matters: While Inflection’s unique value prop has always been the empathetic, personal nature of its chatbot — it now also gains capabilities to rival the top performers. With Claude 3’s release on Monday, and now Inflection 2.5, that marks two near GPT-4 models just this week!

AI RESEARCH
🦠 Researchers create self-spreading AI malware

Image source: Cornell and Israel IT
The Rundown: Cybersecurity researchers just developed the first known computer ‘worm’ designed to target and spread through interconnected AI ecosystems.
The details:
Morris II uses adversarial prompts to trick AI models into replicating malicious inputs/actions and spreading them to other AI agents.
Researchers successfully used the worm in experiments to steal sensitive data and send spam via AI email assistants.
The malware worked against OpenAI, Google, and open-source AI models in experiments.
It can also embed malicious prompts inside images to infect AI systems.
Why it matters: The integration of AI across industries has dramatically expanded the attack surface for malware like the worm in this study. With centralized AI models serving many downstream products, a single compromise could have severe ripple effects across countless systems.

Welcome, AI enthusiasts.
The OpenAI vs. Elon Musk saga just took another twist — with Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever (!) and co. pulling out email receipts to refute the billionaire's claims.

OPENAI
🧨 OpenAI fires back at Musk with receipts

The Rundown: OpenAI just punched back at former co-founder Elon Musk’s lawsuit, releasing a blog post containing a series of his own emails to refute claims that the company abandoned its original mission in pursuit of profits.
The details:
Emails show Musk urging OpenAI to raise at least $1B, pushing the nonprofit to find more financing to achieve its lofty AGI goals.
Musk also suggested in 2018 that Tesla should acquire OpenAI as "the only path" for the startup to stay relevant and beat Google.
Also of note is Ilya Sutskever, listed under the blog’s authors after being absent from public view since November’s drama.
Sutskever said in one email that the ‘Open’ in OpenAI refers to everyone benefitting from AI, not sharing the science — raising eyebrows in the open-source AI community.
Musk responded to the blog by tweeting that he would drop the lawsuit if the company changes its name to ‘ClosedAI’.
Why it matters: The drama surrounding OpenAI continues to be the best reality show in tech, and Elon’s latest cameo adds a whole new level of spiciness. While the emails tell another side of the story, Musk is not one to back down from a fight — meaning there are likely more fireworks to come.

🚨 Whistleblower sounds alarm on Copilot Designer

The Rundown: A senior software engineer at Microsoft just escalated concerns to the FTC regarding Copilot Designer, warning the company is not doing enough to prevent the AI from generating harmful content.
The details:
Shane Jones discovered a vulnerability in OpenAI’s DALL-E (which powers Copilot Designer), allowing him to bypass content filters.
Jones said he urged the company to pull the product until more safeguards were in place, but was ignored.
In his letter, Jones alleges the tool depicts graphic violence, underage drug/alcohol use, political bias, copyright violations, and more.
Why it matters: This explosive complaint from within Microsoft's own ranks seriously undermines the tech giant's public commitment to "responsible AI" principles — while also suggesting profits may be trumping safety.

The details:
Oxford researchers divided 1,000 students into two groups, with one using Rori for two sessions per week in addition to normal math lessons.
After 8 months, the Rori students had significantly higher math growth scores than the control group.
Rori works on mobile devices and low-bandwidth networks.
The projected cost per student is also just $10.

The Rundown: The US Army Research Lab is reportedly testing commercial AI chatbots like GPT-4 as battlefield planning assistants in war game simulations.
The details:
In an experiment, AI chatbots proposed battle plans for a war scenario in the game StarCraft II.
OpenAI's GPT-4 outperformed other AI models tested, though they were still imperfect.
The DoD has identified a whopping 180 possible military uses for AI, working with copmpanies like Palantir and Scale AI to integrate the tech.
Experts caution against using AI for military decisions, citing feasibility and ethical/bias concerns.
Why it matters: While AI’s integration in warfare is unavoidable, its use on the battlefield still raises troubling ethical and moral questions. But as the AI arms race heats up between global powers, the pressure to deploy the tech to gain a military advantage will only grow — whether or not it is truly ready for use.

The details:
TripoSR uses an AI system with millions of parameters to analyze a 2D image and predict a 3D representation of the object.
The model was trained on a massive dataset of nearly 1M 3D objects, including both synthetic renderings and real-world captures.
TripoSR runs efficiently without requiring a high-end GPU, making it widely accessible for use in design, gaming, AR/VR, and beyond.
Why it matters: With its impressive speed and quality, TripoSR represents a major leap forward in AI-powered 3D creation. By enabling nearly instant generations from a single photo, the tech could revolutionize workflows and empower more creators to bring their visions to life in 3D.
AI TRAINING
🥊 Comparing Claude 3 vs. ChatGPT

The Rundown: Anthropic just released Claude 3, setting new industry benchmarks across a wide range of tasks.
Here are a couple of tests we ran for Claude 3 (Opus) vs. ChatGPT (GPT-4):
Content writing: When asked the question, “Write a blog post about the benefits of traveling to other countries,” Claude responded more naturally and less robotically than ChatGPT.
Coding an app: When the task was to code a colorful currency converter app, Claude did a better job in following the instructions and making it colorful. ChatGPT’s app was functional but very plain.
Math: It’s well-known that LLMs are not good with prime numbers. Surprisingly, ChatGPT answered correctly when asked “Is 29593 a prime number?”, while Claude did not.
Creative writing: “Write ten sentences that end with ‘th’”. ChatGPT did 4 out of 10 correctly, while Claude got right 5 out of 10.

📉 Trust in AI tumbles in new study

The Rundown: Trust in AI tool companies has dropped significantly worldwide in recent years, according to a newly released 2024 Trust Barometer study.
The details:
Responses show a stark 26-point gap between high trust in the overall tech industry (76%) and much lower trust in AI specifically (50%).
AI trust in the U.S. plummeted by 15 points from 2019 to just 35%, while global numbers fell 8 points to 53%.
AI concerns centered on privacy, devaluing humanity, societal harm, and lack of regulation — not job displacement as often assumed.
Why it matters: Despite AI accelerating faster than ever, the public’s trust in the industry is going in the complete opposite direction. How AI leaders respond and adapt to negative mainstream sentiment will shape the trajectory of mass adoption in the years ahead.

⭐️ Madonna adopts Runway for visuals

The Rundown: Pop icon Madonna has become an early adopter of AI-generated video technology, reportedly leveraging Runway’s platform to create visual effects for her ongoing Celebration Tour.
The details:
Madonna's team experimented with AI text-to-video to generate moving images for her performance of "La Isla Bonita."
The AI-generated visuals replaced earlier CGI attempts that were deemed "bland and cheesy".
Runway CEO Cristobal Valenzuela said that musicians A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, and Slash have also utilized Runway.
Why it matters: Between Runway’s growing adoption and Sora’s viral teasers, the AI video wave is coming fast. And while initial sentiment was overwhelmingly negative towards AI, some artists seem to be coming around to the idea of AI as a tool rather than a replacement.

ELON MUSK
🐦 Former Twitter execs sue Elon Musk

The Rundown: Four former top Twitter executives, including the ex-CEO and CFO, are suing Elon Musk for allegedly failing to pay over $128 million in severance — claiming the billionaire fired them without cause.
The details:
The plaintiffs include former CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, CLO Vijaya Gadde, and GC Sean Edgett.
Musk allegedly cited reasons like "gross negligence" for the firings, which the execs deny in the suit.
The former leaders say Musk has "special ire" toward them due to clashes during the acquisition process.
Severance amounts range from $6.8M to $57.4M per exec, with Agrawal seeking the largest sum.
Why it matters: Elon has had his fair share of lawsuits recently — but this time, he’s on the receiving end. While the aggressive strategy towards rebranding the Twitter HQ culture and brand has seemingly been a success, the consequences continue to ripple on.

KLARNA
📲 AI replaces 700 customer service reps

The Rundown: Swedish Fintech giant Klarna released a blog praising the success of its OpenAI-powered customer service chatbot, which handled a whopping 2.3M conversations in the last month.
The details:
Klarna estimates the assistant will drive $40M in additional profit in 2024.
The chatbot finished the equivalent work of 700 full-time employees.
The average time to resolution dropped from 11 minutes to 2 minutes, with the bot available 24/7 and able to converse in over 35 languages.
The Swedish firm laid off 700 employees in 2022 and said it will no longer be hiring new staff outside of engineering due to AI.
Why it matters: Klarna’s eye-popping statistics are a likely indicator of where all customer service is heading. Which, despite profit gains and user satisfaction, will decimate a massive segment of workers. While AI’s unlocks are endless — they won’t come without a major reorganization of current labor.

😱 Elon Musk sues Sam Altman and OpenAI

Image source: Getty Images / Reuters
The Rundown: Elon Musk just sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman over claims that the AI firm abandoned its founding mission to benefit humanity in favor of profits with Microsoft.
The details:
The lawsuit claims OpenAI breached its nonprofit charter and licensing terms by keeping GPT-4 secret and proprietary.
Musk seeks to force OpenAI back to its original mission of developing open and safe AGI technology, which he believes has shifted since helping co-found the company in 2015.
Musk also believes the new board lacks the expertise to determine if breakthroughs like the rumored Q* system reach AGI.
The filing also highlights the complexity of OpenAI’s corporate structure, with 8 different sub-companies listed in the lawsuit.
Why it matters: Elon Musk's history with OpenAI adds a new layer of intrigue to the most captivating story in tech. While the lawsuit's outcome is uncertain, it is likely to uncover several mysteries surrounding OpenAI, including the departure of Ilya Sutskever, the Q* breakthrough, and more. Stay tuned…

🗣️ ChatGPT quietly rolls out ‘Read Aloud’

The Rundown: A new ChatGPT feature called ‘Read Aloud‘ has been quietly rolling out to a select group of users on both mobile and desktop versions, with no official announcement from OpenAI.
The details:
Read Aloud allows ChatGPT to read the answers it generates aloud using an AI-generated voice.
Users can select and change the voice of ChatGPT in settings, with five options currently available: Ember, Breeze, Cove, Juniper, and Sky.
The rollout of Read Aloud appears to be limited to a small number of users, but we expect an official announcement and broader rollout shortly.
Images were obtained via direct message to our team from the user @TeddyNAE on X.
Why it matters: While ChatGPT's voice memo feature on its mobile app is a great conversational partner, it was lacking one important quality: the ability to respond via voice. The new feature will now allow ChatGPT to read messages it generates back to users — greatly increase accessibility to the tech.

ADOBE
🎶 Adobe previews ‘Photoshop of music’

The Rundown: Adobe just demoed Project Music GenAI Control, a prototype for easily generating and editing audio with AI — allowing creators to craft custom music tracks using text prompts.
The details:
Users start by inputting a text description to produce initial audio in a specified genre.
Integrated editing controls then allow adjusting patterns, tempo, intensity, and length to customize tracks.
The model is also able to reshape audio based on a reference melody and produce seamless background loops.
Adobe aims to solve major pain points for podcasters, broadcasters and other audio needs without pro experience, though the tech is not yet being released to the public.
Why it matters: While image and video generation has garnered most of the hype, it feels like music’s AI moment is coming. Between this Adobe demo and breakthroughs like Suno and Google’s MusicLM — it’s only a matter of time before the next billboard song is generated from prompts.
Check out the full demo video here.

KLARNA
📞 AI replaces 700 customer service reps

The Rundown: Fintech giant Klarna just released a blog touting the success of its OpenAI-powered customer service chatbot, which handled a whopping 2.3M conversations in the last month.
AI TRAINING
📊 Create an expense report using ChatGPT

The Rundown: Using ChatGPT's vision and text extraction capabilities, you can upload your receipts to quickly generate an expense report.
Go to ChatGPT and create a new chat.
Upload or take photos of the receipts you wish to include in your expense report.
Prompt ChatGPT: “Analyze each receipt and create an expense report based on the uploaded receipts. For each receipt, record the date, merchant, and amount, then categorize each expense”
ChatGPT will provide initial results for you to verify their accuracy. Afterward, you can request a CSV file of the expenses to incorporate into your expense report or import it into a spreadsheet.

AI RESEARCH
🗣️ Alibaba’s EMO brings portraits to life

The Rundown: Alibaba researchers just unveiled EMO, an AI system that generates realistic videos of portraits talking, singing, and moving from a single reference image and audio clip.
The details:
EMO was trained on 250+ hours of diverse multi-lingual footage, including speeches, films, and singing performances.
The model sidesteps traditionally needed 3D face models, directly generating frames with a diffusion model instead.
EMO mixes in reference footage to enable consistency across longer videos while realistically capturing expressions and lip-syncing.
Why it matters: Adding EMO’s realistic audio/expression syncing to Sora’s recent quality leap means we’re likely about to be in a whole new world of AI video generation capabilities very soon… Which brings both creative excitement and tremendous deepfake concern.
