🤖 How to hook GPT-4 to your brain

Rowan Cheung • 4 minutes

In today's rundown:

  • 🧠 Connect GPT-4 to your brain: Unlock all the knowledge in the world

  • 💻 Replit teams up with Google: The future of software development

  • 📱 Perplexity's new iPhone app: ChatGPT with cited sources and voice search

  • 🎉 Today's giveaway: 500+ best ChatGPT prompts

Read time: 5 minutes

🧠 Connect GPT-4 to Your Brain

In this incredible YouTube video, Fireship hooked up a device called the Crown into GPT-4 with some basic Javascript programming. Doing this allowed him to communicate with GPT-4 using just his thoughts.

The Crown is similar to Neuralink, except you can wear it on your head, instead of implanting an entire chip into your brain. Essentially, the Crown works by:

  • Measuring brainwaves with tiny electrodes on the back of the head

  • Connecting to a mobile app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi

  • Providing utilities for improving focus and accessing raw data in JSON

This fascinating experiment offers a glimpse into a transhuman cyborg future, where every human (or at least every wealthy human) will have access to all the knowledge in the world, not just at their fingertips but through their very own brain.

💻 Replit Teams Up With Google

Replit is a free online IDE (integrated development environment) that helps you go from idea to live software with minimal setup. It's been a dream for developers, as they can bring projects to life faster than ever.

And it just got even better- over 20 million Replit developers will now have access to Google Cloud services, infrastructure, and foundation models for generative AI.

The rundown of the partnership:

  • Allows Google Cloud and Workspace developers to use Replit's collaborative code editing platform

  • Demonstrates Google Cloud's commitment to building an open ecosystem for AI-generated code

  • Represents the next step for Replit's goal of empowering 1 billion software creators

This incredible announcement comes shortly after Github revealed the launch of Copilot X, which we covered in this issue

🤖 AI Pope Francis just broke the internet

Rowan Cheung • 4 minutes

In today's rundown:

  • 🤖 AI Pope Francis: Puffy vest Pope blows up the internet

  • 🍎 Apple Acquires AI startup: Video compression and more

  • ⚡️ Zoom releases Zoom IQ: AI-powered smart companion

  • 🎉 Today's giveaway: 200 ChatGPT UX Prompts

Read time: 5 minutes

🤖 AI Pope Francis

AI-generated images have gone viral before, but a recent picture of the pope wearing a swagged-out puffy jacket has blown up the internet.

The image, first posted on this subreddit for Midjourney, spread rapidly on social media platforms as a meme before being debunked.

The image is definitely fake, and there are important tells:

  • Somebody posted it alongside three alternatives on the Midjourney subreddit.

  • Details such as a hand not quite grasping the coffee cup, a crucifix with improper angles, and the edge of a glasses lens transitioning into its own shadow indicate AI generation.

Despite telltale signs of AI generation to us AI enthusiasts, 99% of the world thought this image was real.

The bottom line: Reality and simulation are likely to blur further as AI technology evolves, raising both concerns and fascination.

Regardless, you must admit the pope has some swag in that white puffer.

🍎 Apple Acquires AI Startup

Apple is silently making moves in the AI scene and recently acquired WaveOne, a startup specializing in AI-based video compression algorithms.

Key points about WaveOne:

  • Founded in 2016 by Lubomir Bourdev and Oren Rippel

  • Developed "content-aware" video compression and decompression algorithm

  • Technology leverages AI-powered scene and object detection

  • Claims to reduce video file sizes by up to 50% and more in complex scenes

  • $9 million in funding from investors before Apple acquisition

This acquisition could help Apple make streaming more efficient for services like Apple TV+.

Other tech giants, such as Google, have already incorporated AI into video compression, resulting in a 4% reduction in YouTube's data usage. Apple might be planning to introduce something similar with the help of WaveOne.

⚡️ Zoom Releases Zoom IQ

Zoom just announced its partnership with OpenAI to enhance Zoom IQ, their AI-powered assistant. Here's the rundown of Zoom IQ's capabilities:

  • Summarizing missed meeting content and answering follow-up questions

  • Generating whiteboards based on text prompts

  • Providing recaps of meetings and summarizing threads in Zoom Team Chat

  • Generating AI-powered responses to colleagues, similar to ChatGPT in Slack

Starting in April, these features will roll out by invitation only, with select meeting summary capabilities made more broadly available.

Zoom is working hard to stay relevant while their main competitors, Google and Microsoft, race to develop the most powerful AI technologies.

🤖 Will AI take your job?

Rowan Cheung • 4 minutes

In today's rundown:

  • 📚 New OpenAI study: Will AI take your job?

  • 💸 Character AI raises $150 million: a16z's big bet

  • 🎓 Stanford students create RizzGPT: Charisma as a Service (CaaS)

  • 🎉 Today's giveaway: 100 ChatGPT Business Ideas

Read time: 4 minutes

📚 New OpenAI Study

OpenAI's latest research, using its new GPT-4 language model and human expertise, has shed light on the potential impact of AI on the job market.

Here's the rundown:

  • Jobs most exposed: mathematicians, tax preparers, and quantitative financial analysts.

  • Other highly exposed occupations: survey researchers, writers and authors, interpreters, and translators.

  • Limitations of the study: subjectivity, sensitivity to prompt alterations, and potential omission of specific skills or tasks

While the study isn't a crystal ball, it does reveal that a staggering 80% of the workforce could see at least 10% of their tasks impacted by GPTs. And for 19% of workers, a whopping 50% of their functions could be affected.

Our advice: Learn to harness and embrace AI. Keep an open mind, stay curious, and be ready to learn new skills as the rapidly-changing world of AI and technology reshapes the job landscape.

💸 Character AI raises $150 Million

AI chatbot startup Character.ai just reached a whopping $1 billion market cap, thanks to a new $150 million investment from Andreessen Horowitz, despite not generating ANY revenue.

Character.AI, founded by two ex-Googlers, hosts various AI-powered personalities that users can interact with through text. You can also:

  • Chat with AI celebs such as Tony Stark or Saul Goodman

  • Create your own AI companion to chat and hang out and interact with

  • Get a productivity boost, life advice, and even a bit of entertainment

The app is currently free, but the company has its eyes set on a subscription model and is flirting with an ad model.

Regardless of how fun Character.AI might be, raising $150 million without generating revenue is no joke, and it's clear that Silicon Valley can't resist the allure of AI.

🎓 Stanford Students Create RizzGPT

Three students named Bryan, Alix, and Varun from Stanford University combined GPT-4, Whisper, and augmented reality glasses to create RizzGPT.

RizzGPT listens in real-time conversations and guides you on what to say next. They're calling it Charisma as a Service (CAAS for short).

It uses:

  • Whisper to transcribe live audio from conversations

  • GPT-4 to come up with a response

  • Monocle AR glasses to display the response live in the glasses

While it's probably best to keep human interaction at just that, this fun experiment showcases the combined power of AI and AR technology. It will be exciting to see future technologies emerging from this sector.

🚨 ChatGPT Bug Exposes Chat History

A recent bug in OpenAI's ChatGPT exposed the titles of some users' past conversations to others, as first reported by Bloomberg

We now know the nightmare ChatGPT outage on Monday was caused by the bug that made many AI enthusiasts take a hit in productivity, and realize how quickly they've become reliant on the chatbot. Here's a quick rundown:

  • The bug allowed a small percentage of users to view other users' conversation titles.

  • The content of the conversations remained private.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the bug's origin in an open-source library and assured that only a small percentage of users were affected:

Our friendly reminder: Be cautious when using AI tools still in development or beta testing phases like ChatGPT. Keep your information safe by not sharing any sensitive details during AI-based conversations.

🤖 Google releases a ChatGPT competitor

Rowan Cheung • 4 minutes

In today's rundown:

  • ⚡️ Bing injects image generation: Create images from words

  • 💚 Google just unleashed the Bard: A new ChatGPT competitor

  • 🔥 Adobe creates an AI image editor: Introducing Firefly

  • 🎉 Today's giveaway: 200 ChatGPT UX prompts

Read time: 4 minutes

⚡️ Bing Injects Image Generation

Bing just announced "Bing Image Creator," enabling you to create images from words in their chat. Here's the rundown:

  • It utilizes OpenAI's advanced DALL-E model to generate images based on text input.

  • The feature will be integrated into Bing chat and Microsoft Edge, making Edge the first browser with a built-in AI image generator.

  • Microsoft adheres to responsible AI principles, implementing safeguards to limit the creation of harmful or unsafe images.

  • Initially, the feature will be available in English, with more languages to be added later.

Alongside this incredible update, they also launch Stories, an AI-powered visual summary that you can click through to learn more about the topic you’re searching for. As well as Knowledge Cards 2.0, an AI-powered infographic-inspired experience that provides fun facts and key information in seconds.

These updates are significant because it's the first time generative imaging will reach the masses.

💚 Google just unleashed the Bard

Google just unleashed the Bard, a brand new chatbot built on their LaMDA model with 137 billion parameters. Bard offers conversational responses to complex questions similar to ChatGPT.

Currently, Bard is rolling out in the U.S. and U.K. (sad face for us Canadians 😭), and you can request access through the waiting list here.

Many users seem to be getting access quickly, and there have been several alarming responses from Bard thus far, such as:

  • 🚨Claiming its training dataset includes Gmail [link]

  • 👎Refusing to write any code [link]

  • 🤯Agreeing that Google is a Monopoly [link]

Although we don't have access ourselves and cannot verify these claims, it seems that some issues were anticipated. Google's CEO had warned employees in a memo before the full release that "things will go wrong."

🔥 Adobe Creates an AI Image Editor

Adobe just announced a powerful AI image editing tool called "Firefly."

Firefly allows users to type commands, generate images, and make instant image modifications. Here's the rundown:

  • It encompasses multiple AI models and utilizes a diffusion-based model.

  • It's trained on Adobe Stock images, meaning images generated will mitigate harmful and ethical concerns around typical AI image generation.

  • It will be integrated directly into Creative Cloud, Document Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Adobe Express workflows (meaning direct integration into creator favorites- Photoshop & Premiere Pro)

Access to Firefly will be expanded slowly and is currently only in Beta for select users. As avid Photoshop users, we're pumped to gain access to this one!

🍎 Apple is Testing Siri with AI

Apple is working on improving Siri, their famous voice assistant, by testing new natural language generation (NLG) features under the codename "Bobcat." The goal is to make Siri better understand and respond to users more naturally.

Here's the rundown:

  • Apple is giving these improvements a test run on Apple TV first through tvOS 16.4 beta.

  • Currently, features are only available on Apple TV, but code for these features exists across iPhone, iPad, Mac, HomePod, and Apple TV, indicating potential expansion.

  • People have been discussing whether Apple is trying to make a chatbot like ChatGPT, but it seems they're just focusing on improving Siri.

  • There is no set timeline for expanding NLG technology beyond Apple TV.

In summary, Apple is improving Siri's understanding and talking to users by testing new language features on Apple TV.

While it might take a little while for these improvements to reach all devices, it's clear that Apple wants to make Siri more like a human friend who can chat with us.

🎥 Runway Releases Gen-2

Yesterday, we talked about the first-ever text-to-video model and how it's an incredible feat for generative AI, but it has a few downfalls.

A new multimodal text-to-video AI system is released just ONE day later, which takes things to a whole new level.

Gen-2 by Runway is here, and it can generate videos using text, images, or video clips as input. Here are some key features:

  • Text to Video: Generate videos in any style using a prompt.

  • Text + Image to Video: Create videos using a driving image and a prompt.

  • Image to Video: Generate videos using only a driving image.

  • Stylization: Transfer the style of an image or prompt to every video frame.

  • Storyboard: Turn mockups into fully stylized and animated renders.

  • Mask: Isolate subjects in a video and modify them with simple text prompts.

  • Render: Convert untextured renders into realistic outputs using an input image or prompt.

🚨 Sam Altman on AI

In a recent ABC News interview, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed the potential pitfalls of AI.

We found two quotes particularly impactful:

  1. On AI taking jobs: "It is going to eliminate a lot of current jobs, that's true. We can make much better ones." [full video here]

  2. His motivation for developing AI: "In terms of impact on our lives and improving our lives and upside, this will be the greatest technology humanity has yet developed" [full video here]

Sam did an excellent job in this interview by acknowledging AI's challenges but also highlighting AI's potential to revolutionize industries and improve countless lives.

🎥 Text-To-Video is Here (sort of)

The first-ever open-sourced text-to-video model is out, and it's, well, interesting

The model, available here to try on Hugging Face, is trained on a whopping 1.7 billion parameters

We think it's "interesting" because it appears as if the model was actually trained on videos from Shutterstock. A lot of videos that it produces, have Shutterstock watermarks written across them.

For example, check out this Twitter post where someone created their own Star Wars movie clip using this model.

While it's incredible that text-to-video is here, our excitement feels somewhat damped by the fact that there are Shutterstock watermarks all over it. However, this is a giant leap forward, and we can expect even better text-to-video models very soon.

👁️ GPT-4 For Greater Accessibility

Be My Eyes, an app that allows blind and low-vision individuals to seek assistance from sighted people has just launched their new "Virtual Volunteer" feature.

The feature is the first to integrate the new image-to-text generator powered by OpenAI's brand-new GPT-4.

Users can soon send images to the AI-powered Virtual Volunteer, who provides instant identification, interpretation, and conversational visual assistance for various tasks.

We slid into Be My Eyes CEO Mike Buckley's DM's on Twitter, and he generously shared some never-seen-before exclusive access to the current use of GPT-4's image-to-text model:

The images he sent us were incredible, to say the least. GPT-4 was able to detect content from a TV screen from a small corner of an image and translate it in real time to another language.

Be My Eyes remains one of our favorite AI companies, demonstrating the powerful potential of AI for the greater good. We look forward to providing ongoing coverage of their progress.
